Opinion: Commercialism on a FREE site

i don't see how any part of the OP was "flaming"

it was just his opinion?

Seriously. He made a pretty tamely-worded post. And as djp himself said, it's probably something that needed to be discussed. He definitely didn't deserve everyone jumping on him with the "lol you're an idiot time to make fun of you" manner that he got from a lot of people. This was no "I got killer studio chops" guy - he was expressing a genuine concern for the direction of the site's future, and, by extension, every member of the site. Do you see the difference there? I hope so, I truly do.

Having said that, I gotta say I disagree with his post, although I can see where he's coming from; I would hate to see OCR become the video game industry's gun-for-hire as much as the next guy, or abandon its Remixing roots for primarily licensed work. I seriously don't think that's what's going to happen to the site though. As djp, Liontamer and the rest have said, this was a one-off project that OCR was approached on, it got the site some much-needed exposure, it strengthened OCR's relationship with a major company in the industry which in turn, in a small way, legitimizes by implication every piece of free music ever released by the site. Not that OCR needs legitimizing to us core listeners... but to someone viewing us from the outside, having Capcom say, "Hey, not only are we cool with what your site does, we like it so much we want you to make an album for us!" is a powerful message of implied, tacit support for the site.

Personally, even though I won't be buying the album - I've honestly never been a fan of MM music - I still support it wholeheartedly. It was a big first for the site, a great opportunity to work with a company that made some of the music that this site exists to honor, and garnered OCR some great publicity.

OP: think.

Capcom approached OCR about doing this album. Capcom is a for-profit entity. OCR is a non-profit entity. In order for a non-profit entity to work with the intellectual property of a for-profit entity, one would figure that some exchanging of money would be involved.

When Capcom approaches you to write an album for them, one which involves creating remixes (an OCR tradition!) of a beloved franchise, you don't say no. It's a rare, exciting opportunity. Part of seizing that opportunity is to agree to the necessary and reasonable condition which Capcom set forth: allowing OCR the license to remix their intellectual property for profit for both the artists and the owners.

There is nothing wrong with musicians being paid for writing music, and there is especially nothing wrong with the owners of said music granting us permission to remix their awesome tunes, sell them, and give them their due cut. It's disgustingly legal and reasonable.

You would say that you dirty sell-out you

Do people not understand what "selling out" actually means?

At what point does the OP clearly state that he thinks the site has sold out as opposed to has taken a first step towards possibly selling out?

How inflammatory something is or isn't depends entirely on the listener, so to me, what I quoted reads like "Why is it that people didn't read the OP in the way I did?"

Yeah...maybe if every remix artist was suddenly forced to sign a contract for a Label/Recording company and started churning out genre-specific music...wait let's not give OCR any ideas now :nicework:

But seriously, I doubt OCR has sold out...however, it would be nice to have a major alternative to OCR. But I digress...Commence with the ThaSauce Remix Resurrection initiative!!!

I hardly ever post in the forums, but here is my 1st post in years. When I seen the album I was excited about listening to it and then found out you had to buy it. I was upset, but after i thought about it i figured i would eventually buy it... because this site has given us tons of free music and ever since i started coming here back in 2001-2002 i have never paid or been asked to pay for anything so i figured it is worth the one time charge of $10.00. but i can understand peoples anger towards this... since in the beginning this site never charged for anything... so it was kind of a let down to have an album on the front page of the site where all the free albums are only to find out you can't freely download this one you have to pay for it.

Just my opinion

True. However, we simply went with an agreement Capcom proposed, and that involved making this a commercial album. Oh well. Soundcloud is always an option.

It is taking every ounce of self-restraint I have not to blow up over all the comments I've seen about the album being commercialized

(he said through gritted teeth)

EDIT: Fuck it, after reading some more my anger has been diffused by the good people of OCR. Clutch save, community :D
