"Temperature" Music

Recommended Posts

Here's something interesting... what music would you classify as "hot", "warm", "room temperature", "cool", and "cold", and at about what temperature? I'm not kidding. Post your picks! Here are some of mine:

https://soundcloud.com/zircon-1/ice-lock (77 K, BP of liquid N2)

Icy textures with the bells, lush reverb

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02176 (115 K, FP of Freon Refrigerant R-12)

Lush reverb, distant, bright textures

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01977 (194.5 K, FP of dry ice)

Cool chiffy lead and ambient pads, breathy ear candy, smooth chords

http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01316 (373 K, desert)

Literal desert ReMix.

Some possible criteria:

- Textures

- Source tune setting (e.g. MegaMan Zero 3 - Snowy Plains = cold place)

- Mix title

- Lyrics

Doesn't have to be an OC ReMix. Any music goes.

I don't have any examples atm but the way I think of a song being cool or hot is dependant on whats happenin to my body. If I'm getting a chill running through my spine when listening to a song, then its cold. If I'm getting super pumped and hyped when listening to a song, then Its gettin hot!

yeah temperature is all well and good but you should probably also take in to consideration the humidity, warmth provided by sunlight, and wind speed.

I divide my music into drinks (instead of temperature) so...i'll just shuffle a few of those around and pull examples:

Brand New Retro - This Hazy Place

this is slightly warm, maybe 75F? but it's humid af, and with no movement in the air.

no sunlight to warm you in this case

(btw, filed under: elixir)

Masuda Toshio - Shinen

slightly cool, maybe around 60F, maybe lower

not really humid, but not dry either. very gentle breeze.

no sunlight (overcast).

Seefeel - Dead Guitars

this is about as hot as songs get, with my perception. :P

115F, possibly more. dry af.

slight breeze but not in a way that alleviates the heat

Willbe - Zephyr

~40F. warm winter weather, so to speak.

dry but not completely. almost no wind, and the sun warms your body a little.

Mosaik - Plateau

welcome to below freezing. this is pretty near 0F

dry, slight breeze, overcast

Groove Armada - Hands of Time

nice summer day, ~80F

slight breeze, very low humidity, sunny.

most of my music forgoes temperature and instead becomes a vista of some sort, I think :S

for science, here's my perception of your tunes:

zircon - ice lock

cold but not that cold, jeez

hovering right below freezing, 25F or so. sunny day, fairly dry, almost no breeze.

it's like a very large castle next to a frozen lake.

zircon - Picolescence

well above freezing.

50F maybe?

it's a place near water, just before sunset...with a noticeable breeze.

Joshua Morse - Morse's Morsecode

not really apt to place a temperature to imo, but I'd say it's near room temperature.

Darkesword - Stranger in the Desert

~50F but with no humidity, I guess?

dunno this one's not really conjuring a temperature either lol.

more like a vast open field at a high latitude, so the sun is low even though it's noon.

(whoops this is a way too long post and I only added 1 ocr tune oh well)

Some of the tracks I would substitute for something else, as I was doing the spring playlist I thought some of these tunes would fit better there but it was kinda difficult coming up with 25 songs from 25 different artists.
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.1
Thomas Newman - Arose
DJ Krush - Dig This Vibe
o9 - No Delay For Days
Daft Punk - Nightvision
Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No.14 'Moonlight' (Movement 1)
Sigur Ros - Untitled #1 (Vaka)
Aphex Twin - Flim
Tim Tetlow - Cyrenic
Them Stars - Turquoise
Cex - I Said It Knowing Full Well I Had No Intention of Doing It
Frédéric François Chopin - Nocturne Op.9 No.2
Dave Wise - Stickerbush Symphony
Oneohtrix Point Never - Cryo
Boards of Canada - Turquoise Hexagon Sun
Le Knight Club- Chérie D'Amoure
Venetian Snares - Hiszekeny
Claude Debussy - Clair de lune
Mum - On The Old Mountain Radio
Cassius - Interlude
Skrypnyk - Closed Circle
Mr. Scruff - Jazz Potato
DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World
Clark - Night Knuckles
Wolfgang Amagaus Mozart - Piano Sonata No.11 'Alla Turca'
No way of disabling video embedding?  Or is the option hiding somewhere?

For me: the "cold" music are usually music that is made with high to middle pitch tones and loooonger notes, like ambient music, and the "hot" or let's say hotter music for me uses more middle to low pitch tones and more continuous and shorter to medium notes.

Also the scales and instrumentation makes a difference. :|

Edit : Some examples come to my mind.

Example of Hot : RO OST - Desert (duh)

Example of Cold : Sonic Adventure OST - Limestone Cave

Take a look on the lenght of the notes and the instrumention.
