  1. I actually approached him for BadAss 3, but he was WAY too busy
  2. I guess I have double standards... Personally, as a musician, I like to stretch the boundaries of what I'm able to do with a song. I don't like just making a cover with a bit of original melody on the same chords. I find it boring to do and doesn't help me grow as a musician. I like to take a closer listen at the source and see what parts of it definine it, what parts are recognizable or what parts are well-made. Making a nearly five-minute long mix of just the NiGHTS motif (which is about ten seconds) was fun and made me play around with it more. Other things that are fun to do and challenging are making a happy song into a dark song, or using parts of the song for other purposes: I have an upcoming mix for the Seiken Densetsu 3 project where I use the main melody as the background "rythm" melody. Sure, it may take more time to recognize it, but I think you'll appreciate the source even more - I surely do when I find out what's possible with it and what chord progressions are beautiful to work with. On the other hand, when I listen to a remix of a source I know very well, I really can enjoy the more conservative mixes. Many tracks of Maverick Rising or the DKC2 project are in my standard playlist, and they're not the most obscure mixes.
  3. Just a small update: the project has been submitted for eval - which means everything is done except for the site (which will be complete within a month). Chernabogue made an awesome trailer and I'll post the final tracklist on the OP once I get the feedback from OCR
  4. Sounds very good man! I think most instruments could use some additional reverb for that extra immense feeling (especially the brass and percussion - the last of which also mises a bit of low-end IMO). But otherwise this sounds really good!
  5. So, since I finally got some good equipment (bought a KORG KRONOS), I can finally start on my own original album. The idea of the album is to include four genres: Air (ethereal, calm songs), Water (waltz, smooth songs), Earth (militaristic) and Fire (high-energy songs). I MAY add Light and Dark down the road. This song is the first of the 'Air' songs. This song isn't completely finished yet, since it needs some finishing touches (small timing fixes, volume fixes, final EQ, etc) but it should convey an ethereal vibe worthy of being called 'Air'. Although a proper name will be given to this one day Looking forward to feedback from you guys! https://soundcloud.com/pu_freak/air-1
  6. Yeah I think the easiest to do is buy an actual MIDI sustain pedal, like timaeus said. The one he posted is a really cheap one that will slip away from under your foot very often, so it can be worth it to check out some more expensive ones (those also have a bit more weight so you can rest your foot on them. I think they're about fifteen to twenty bucks). Otherwise, try to decrease the cut-off of your piano and strings if that's possible - that'll also give it a bit more sustain.
  7. A little update for those interested: BadAss 3 will have 20 mixes by a total of 22 artists, clocking at just under an hour-and-a-half. The final tracklist will be put on the OP whenever Chern and I have decided on the order. And as a treat, the cover art for the album has been posted on the OP
  8. I've been doing fine. BadAss 3 (and my master thesis for that matter) are nearly done, so it's time to think about what I want to do after that. It's good to hear from you again, man :)

  9. There are some errors in the acoustic piano playing, but my main gripe is that it sounds like everything is played staccato... in other words, you're never using a sustain pedal. For the ambience you're setting in the beginning of the song, this is really a prerequisite (since there's a silence at most points). The switch in instruments at 1:13 is way too sudden; it's a completely different ambiance and it'll startle listeners. This is also caused by the rather weak quality of the harpsichord and the staccato strings. I also think that too much is happening at the same time there. I think turning down the volume on the strings, decreasing the staccato on them (sustain them longer) and finding another sample for the harpsichord would help a lot. I do doubt that a harpsichord is the appropirate instrument here, but that's your arrangement decision. Furthermore, sustain the notes on the acoustic piano to set the mood and keep the atmosphere.
  10. It lives! How've you been man?

  11. Only one week to go! And the remaining mixes are sooooooo close... why don't you guys send me some WAVs for Christmas?
  12. Nina Simone - Feeling Good Peaceful waking up and then coming at you with full energy
  13. While that probably doesn't mean much, coming from the album staff, I must say that I think the quality is much more consistent than it was with the two previous volumes. Granted, the mixers had to take much more crap... ehh... I mean: feedback from us (leading to much more hours of work for the mixers), I think that most (if not all) mixes would pass the OCR bar. I really think that the mixers have really pushed themselves to create the very best they can - and I'm very grateful for that.
  14. Then we can still beat you to the evals with BA3
  15. Judges you say? Well I guess we YES'd it That being said, another mix is in! It's Molgera's theme from the Wind Waker mixed by Chimpazilla and Redg. It's a minimalist but suuuuper creepy approach and it's a unique and great addition to our album
  16. Kammo64 finished his Mad Jack mix and he's got a great twisted electronic mix that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day
  17. I'm not doing any more volumes after the trilogy finishes (we've always continued right after launch, so I've been working on BadAss albums non-stop since BA1), but that doesn't mean nobody will continue the concept
  18. Last month! Many of your are VERY close to being finished, but there are some mixes that need some tweaks. Remember, the cut-off is end of this year, so it's time for that final push P.S. Is it me or are there solely album artists posting in this thread? Where are all of our groupies?
  19. Chern's collab with AngelCityOutlaw and Furilas is done, which marks our 10th complete track! It's a rocking rendition of the Machinedramon theme from Digimon World and is a great addition to our collection of more obscure soundtracks (or at least mix-wise). That also means we now have more completed mixes than we have WIPs!
  20. Yeah the part around 2:13 is much clearer now, although I did like the crescendo-vibe you had due to the increasing volume of the left hand in the previous version. I think that you can still increase the volume of the left hand from the 2-minute mark until 2:30 to make that part more powerful - especially now you cleared up the bass notes there.
  21. Another finished mix! Pablo Coma has created a calm, but dreadful mix of 'The Openend Way' from Shadow of the Colossus, filled with sorrow and despair. BA3 won't always hit you in the face like volume 2 did, but will have a menacing effect on your pysche. Which, of course, is a good thing
