The ire that people are drawing from the SF X T current event is that characters are on every version of the game, but only come unlocked on a specific version. This also boils down to the idea that console-exclusive content still sells systems, which is so unbelievably flawed these days that I don't even know where to begin dismantling it.

On-Disc DLC is the closest thing our industry has come to an oxymoron. DLC = DownLoadable Content. On-Disc = not downloadable If you put something on the disc and the only thing you're downloading is an unlock code for said content, that's not downloadable content. The idea behind DLC goes back to the days of Patches and Mods from PC Gaming. Until the widespread availability of broadband AND large enough rewritable content storage built into them, modern consoles had no way to really update a game after relase to either add things or make fixes. Normally, a different hardcopy of the game would be released if it was fully warranted. PC Games, by way of being the pioneering format for the internet, have had the ability to be patched, upgraded, and modded since the early 90's. You could simply release some files and only have to pay for the bandwidth that people use to download them and BAM instant upgrades. Due to how locked down consoles are with security countermeasures, and the amount of control exercised by the console's respective online marketplaces, its not nearly as easy to release content or patches but at least now the services are on par with what is available for PC. However, publishers have found people so overly willing to pay to keep their games usable and relevant for longer (considering the vastly increased prices of game creation and marketing these days) by releasing DLC for it. Some DLC is very good. Some DLC is very bad. The point is that DLC is normally content that is not available on the disc at time of release that you have to pay for or download to get. Why On-Disc DLC is considered disgusting by many is that it is an extremely shameless nickel-and-diming scheme to get you to pay more money to get everything on the disc that you bought available to you. Pardon the phrase, but back in my day, we either had to PLAY to unlock stuff or had to enter cheat codes. So, anything on the disc that's locked that requires me to pay extra money to unclock it is technically NOT DLC. It's ODLC: On-Disc Locked Content. Examples of this would be me buying a fighting game and then charging me money to unlock all the characters. If the characters weren't on the disc in the first place, then I would pay money for them. But when I buy a game, I think I'm buying everything on there open to me should I try hard enough to get it. When I pay for DLC, I'm choosing to pay for extra development time that was spent that couldn't or wasn't put into the initial release. People like me get upset because this is technically ripping people off. I don't even see it as being convenient to anyone but the publisher. The developers had to work hard to get the content done regardless, and if it is on-disc they had to work hard before the game was released. And to get On-Disc DLC, you still need to go online on your system and buy it. No excuse there. "Here you go, sir. Your cheeseburger with fries and a drink for $12.99. Oh, by the way, the drink comes with the combo, and it's on your table, but you have to pay me an extra five dollars on top of the $12.99 in order to drink it. It's On-Table DLC."

Its fine. David can ban the people who are doing the sacking, and we made a backup copy of the server before we updated to 1.2. Worst-case is we either revert back to what it was before Saturday, or temporarily reinstate the old version for people to get stuff back, then switch back to the new version with bans in-place. Or we could go temporary whitelisting UNTIL bukkit is updated. I leave that up to you folks/Brushfire to decide how its done. Also wanted to put out there that I'm considering running servers for other games on the minecraft box, resources depending. The current box does suck up a bit more juice to leave up 24 hours a day. We might start taking some small donations just to offset the cost of electricity. (A 500-watt computer running 24 hours a day costs $33.60 maximum a month)

Submission Standards Changes & New Encodings!
Level 99 replied to djpretzel's topic in Announcements
Considering the time it takes to judge a normal track to be acceptable based on source usage and arrangement, the amount of time it would take to do something longer than 7 minutes would likely exponentially increase time to judge. The whole idea is that the site is less restricted by cost of data hosting and transfer now, which opens up the quality and length standards to what we now have it set to. If you're going to submit a song that's as long as a Simpson's episode, you should be prepared to wait, possibly. -
If you make any updates to that at all, you need to get them to me. Incoming PM.

So I've been watching an LP of this lately because I got 90% through the game and gave up, and it's just as painful to watch as it was to play. It occurs to me that I never really commented on the game after it came out. I feel like my money was not well spent UNLESS it went 100% to Gearbox. Gearbox released the game 3d Realms butchered, and thus now has the rights to future Duke Nukem projects. If my money went to Gearbox and helps them make a good Duke Nukem game, I won't feel nearly as bad as I do right now. This game ended up playing like a walkthrough of the worst mis-steps of FPS history; a by-the-points demonstration of what not to make in a game. /endrantstillrelevant8monthsafterrelease

1. recruiting Official & Unofficial Arrangement Projects (Tracking)
Level 99 replied to Bahamut's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
Seeking interest is basically the first stage when people are just seeing if other people are interested in participating in OR listening to an album based on concept. Actively recruiting means the person has determined that they're going through with it and is seeking participants instead of just testing the waters for reception. -
The memorial night was both wonderful and heartrending. There were people singing songs, lots of pictures and drawings of Mike around, people going up to the mic and telling stories. The place where it was held was so full that there were more people outside the front than in the store itself, and the thing was livestreamed with so many people trying to watch that they hit the user limit very early in the night. I did my best to go up there and say a few words because Mike was the kind of guy who, if you only met him for two minutes, you still remembered for the rest of your life. I feel like Doug does. It doesn't feel like he is gone, just that he is away on a trip. The things he did that were captured on audio and video barely show a glimpse of the kind of vigor he had, but its through those that people who never got to meet him will know why everyone who did is so emotional.

The full story is on both Nerdy Show's Facebook and Forums. It was not a hit and run, and Mike was completely at fault. He charged into an intersection when he shouldn't have. Its also in the first post of the thread.

They need to start planning arrangements for this because people are coming in from all over the country. Even though we were, and some are still, hoping for something to improve, it says something when even neurosurgeons won't operate due to the severity of an injury. At a certain point one has to start coping with the grief and loss in a situation like this even if they're not technically passed on yet. Nerdy Show definitely is the brother/sister/whatevercloseness podcast to OCAD. I consider all of those guys to be very close friends. Hex, Cap, Mike, all of them are my brothers. Mike's accident has hit me so hard it is hard to come to terms with what has happened. The outpouring of community support and love for Mike, ranging from his closest family and friends to people who he had never met and only was known through his show or his work, has been astounding. Thus far, I've seen pictures, comics, Minecraft structures, songs, all of these tributes to him and his life. For anyone who didn't know him, I encourage you to listen to Nerdy Show's past episodes just to get the briefest glimpse of the spark of life he had in him. You can hear it in his voice, in everything he says. For those who did know him, they know that the best way to remember him is to celebrate him in the same way he celebrated every day he lived.
