OCR01554 - Super Castlevania IV "Curse Curse Revolution"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is an awesome concept. I can't think of much else to say other than great job on pulling this off. -
OCR01549 - Chrono Trigger "Theme of Frog's"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm a huge fan of all of Select Start's work, and this is no exception. This is a top notch recording, and the performance is good as well. However, I'm surprised that this got passed by the judges, while everything is great, this is extremely close to the original. On the OST, Frog's theme was 1:50 seconds long, this is 1:52, and the arrangement is so close to the original that it wouldn't be unsafe to call it a cover. I still think this sounds great though, and it'll be going on my mp3 player with a good deal of Select Start's other works. There's no denying that this is a tight recording, but definitely not a remix in my opinion. -
FFMQ - Benjamin's Fight for Life
about:blank replied to Wynd_Balduram's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Great stuff here, I don't have much to say in terms of criticism, but I think that your lead guitar is just a tad quiet. Maybe it's just my headphones, but if that lead stuck out just a little more this would be even better. That being said, I really like the breakdown near the middle to end and how it leads up to the ending. As far as arrangement is concerned, this is great. If anything, I think you'd just need to work on your mastering a little bit more. -
I like this thread. Honestly, a lot of the games that I really like are considered crap by most. Exhibit A: The Granstream Saga I don't think I've heard anything mentioned about this game, ever. In my opinion, this game has a very intruiging story, a great soundtrack (I've yet to find a PSF for it though), and the anime style cutscenes would've been awesome if the voice acting hadn't killed them. Exhibit B: Shadow Madness Not many people have heard of this game, and I find that those who have heard of it usually hate it. I thought this game had a great soundtrack, a really cool story and concept (everything on Disk 1 took place above ground, while the second Disk was of this strange/cool underground world). There were also some first person shooter style mini games, which is pretty much unheard of in an RPG (unless the RPG itself is from a first person perspective). There was also a battle avoidance system, where you would be able to avoid a battle by pressing a certain button when you heard a monster or enemy. Exhibit C: Jim Power and the Lost Dimension in 3D This game, while having a ridulously long title, is actually pretty cool. It's also insanely difficult, and I've only made it to the beginning of the third level on hard mode. It's also worth noting that this game has an awesome soundtrack that is in dire need of some remixing.

Wow... I really need to keep up with things. I searched around for it and saw some screens and, like you said, it doesn't really look like a remake at all, actaully it doesn't really look much different from the SNES version. Of course, considering how great FFVI was, that's not really a bad thing.
-
I thought the load times on the PSX remake were pretty bad too, but I eventually finished it. While the story could've been a little better, I really liked the class system (which was kinda reminiscent of FF3), and the soundtrack is one of my favorites in the Final Fantasy series. I've never played the GBA remake, but I've been wanting to give it a try. The ports of Final Fantasy 1,2, and 3 were all great, so I know I'll like the port for 5. I just don't know if it'd be worth buying if I already own the PSX version, but knowing how Square-Enix likes to put a lot of time into their remakes, it would probably be worth it just for the added features and updates alone. FFVI would be awesome on GBA or DS, but I'm naively hoping for a port of Chrono Trigger, or better yet, Radical Dreamers.

A possible new take on remixes? Would it be allowed?
about:blank replied to al3xand3r's topic in General Discussion
I'm not a judge or anything but I think that it would be allowed. "Falling Back" by Darangen and "Town Life" by djpretzel and Geoffrey Taucer are some examples of remixes with lyrics that aren't specifically about the game being remixed. -
A question for any Music Majors here
about:blank replied to about:blank's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for all of the advice, guys. To address what some people here were asking about, the universities that I'm applying to are somewhat relaxed with their standards. By no means are they bad schools, though. Here are the three schools that I'm applying for: The University of Maine at Orono The University of Maine at Farmington and... The University of Southern Maine I've only recieved a response from one of the schools so far (The University of Southern Maine) but the other two universities also have somewhat similar standards. -
I'm in the process of applying to a few universities in hopes of getting a Bachelor's degree in Music, and they're sending letters back to me saying that I'm going to need to prepare for an audition. It says that during this audition, I'll have to do the following things: Prepare a brief, 7 - 10 minute performance with the instrument I'm most proficient in Be ready to sight-read, and to play a number of different scales Take a written theory skills diagnostic test Take an ear training diagnostic test Take a sight singing test and lastly... Give an aural demonstartion which includes an assessment of my ability to match pitch, to sing an octave above or below a given pitch in my range, and to demonstrate my musical memory A lot of this I'm not worried about, I think I can handle performing on an instrument, and taking the written theory skills diagnostic test, but the aural tests are a completely different story. I have absolutely no skills when it comes to singing. So, to anyone here who has been through this before, what exactly is the audition like? Is the aural portion a very vital part of the audition? What would I expect to find on the written theory skills diagnostic test? Also, during the performance portion of the audition, are you able to choose any piece of music that you want to play, or do they recommend that the piece you choose is of the classical genre? Thanks in advance

Metroid Prime 2 'Stir of Echoes' RESUB 11/25
about:blank replied to avaris's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
It's been a while since I've listened to this. Beginning is pretty cool, some cool ambient sounds, and I think I hear some Sytrus in there somewhere. I like the hi hats in the beginning of this, the song probably wouldn't suffer without them, but it's a nice touch, and I think nice touches like that go a long way in ambient music. I'm thinking the same thing about the reverse bass drum, it's a nice touch IMO so you should probably keep it. My main problem with this is the piano at the end, maybe it's just my headphones, but it sounds like there's a lot of clipping or distortion there. Also, during that last part, there's a wind sound that's going along with the piano, I think the ending would sound even better if you just had that wind sound keep going like 5 or 6 seconds after the piano's done, and then slowly fade out. Also, if I were you I'd go to the judges decisions for your first sub and make sure that you took all of their suggestions and criticisms and incorporated them into your final mix. Just as a way to double check and make sure there isn't anything else left for you to do in terms of improving this, or if there's something they've noticed about the mix that we haven't. I say this because it takes a long time for mixes to get judged, so it's definitely best to be sure that this will get submitted. All that being said, I really like this, and I look forward to hearing the next update. -
Earthworm Jim Acrophobia; Is this ready for resub?
about:blank replied to about:blank's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Skrypnyk: Nah, don't worry about it. Actually, I thought it was pretty cool when I stumbled across the article. Besides, this probably wouldn't be where it is now if it weren't for some of the advice you gave me when this mix was in it's earlier stages. avaris: I think you're right about this having a good chance, but I'm still a little worried about it not getting submitted. For some reason I always get overwhelmed when I go to the judges decisions forum and look at all those NOs. Well, now that I'm done with this, I can focus on other things (i.e. the xenogears project BTW I'm gonna have a WIP up on the project forums in a few hours ). Thanks for the support guys! -
Earthworm Jim Acrophobia; Is this ready for resub?
about:blank replied to about:blank's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Alright, I made a few slight changes and submitted this a couple days ago. Also, I had no idea that this was in an article. If only I had read this before resubmitting! I really liked the idea of adding in audio clips from like a 1970's movie, and now I kinda wish that I had incorporated something like that with the song. Oh well, if this gets rejected (which I really hope it doesn't) I'll definitely be doing that. Well that's about all I have to say about that, wish me luck guys! -
OCR00728 - Super Mario Kart "Rainbow Rain"
about:blank replied to Disco Dan's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This isn't bad. Nothing in this mix really jumps out at me, but, I geuss for the style of the song, nothing should jump out at me. That being said, I still like the style of this. All in all this isn't one of my favorite mixes, but it's still pretty good. -
The "who uses what" thread
about:blank replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Music Composition & Production
Since I'm sure everyone is simply dying to know what I use to mix, here's my studio: Here's a list of everything in my studio (sorry if the numbers in the picture are hard to read): 1. A 90 $ acoustic I found at a garage sale. 2. A guitar given to me by a friend of my father's. 3. A Yamaha PSR275. 4. My Axiom 49 semi-weighted USB MIDI Controller. 5. FL Studio 6 XXL Edition. 6. An HP Pavillion a1213w. 7. A cheap, Vantage bass. 8. An M-Audio Fast Track guitar/mic recording interface. 9. Pioneer CS-C9000 speakers. It's not much, but it gets me through. -
OCR00774 - Guardian Legend "Hyperion"
about:blank replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I think this is one of the first mixes I've heard from here. I still remember being shocked that there were other people who liked the music from "The Guardian Legend". I can still remember being upset when my uncle would play this and turn the volume down so he could play country music instead of the in game music. Anyways, onto the actual mix: I can't tell if the guitar is real or sampled, either way, it sounds great. The piano sounds nice as always. The heavier sections are also very cool. It took me a few listens to recognize the theme being mixed, but when I did, I liked how it was incorporated. I can honestly say that I don't have any complaints with this mix, the emotion conveyed with the sequencing of this arrangemeng along with the feeling of nostalgia I get from hearing anything from The Guardian legend is just awesome. -
OCR00313 - Chrono Trigger "Team Gato"
about:blank replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This cracks me up every time I hear it. I can't help but laugh when I hear the phone conversation with "Gato" and the girl, or the part at 3:47 with the extremely old school hip hop strings. The concept of having it take place as like a kareoke night in a bar is really creative. Good stuff. -
OCR01125 - Astérix (NES) "Niggaz 4 Life"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm kinda surprised at the negative feedback that this mix recieved. This is probably one of the most creative mixes on OCR, yet all people can focus on is how they don't like rap, or how the lyrics are offensive. Personally, I thought the lyrics and arrangement were very creative. I'm not even really a big fan of rap music, but I loved this. -
OCR01010 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Hot Ice"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice Lava Reef reference at 1:38! The flute solo was great, as well as all everything else in the mix. I could understand how some people would complain about the bass synth, but I think it adds to the mood of the piece. Nice work! -
OCR00973 - Chrono Trigger "Forever"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I absolutely love the vinyl piano introduction, and how the beats are slowly filtered in. The transition between the intro to the trance part is just awesome. From there, though, nothing much seemed to jump out at me. That being said, this is still a very solid mix, with an outstanding introduction. -
OCR01048 - Super Metroid "One Girl in All the World"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, that's almost exactly what I pictured when first listening to this. The arrangement itself is very creative, as a fan of the original song, I like where this was taken. I found this when I first started going to OCR. For a mix made only a few years ago, this brings back a lot of memories for me, which only goes shows how powerful the music is. Awesome stuff here. -
OCR00892 - Radical Dreamers "Dreaming"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very nice work here, I've always been a huge fan of Mitsuda, and for one of the earlier mixes on the site, this was very well done. -
An OCR new year - Resolutions? (Happy New Years!)
about:blank replied to Pi_R_Squared's topic in General Discussion
Here's my top five: 5. Make some friends and stuff. 4. Get a new car. 3. Learn to play the violin. 2. Finish up work on my album. 1. Get a mix submitted to OCR. -
Earthworm Jim Acrophobia; Is this ready for resub?
about:blank replied to about:blank's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Alright, I think I fixed all of the problems you addressed, hopefully this is my final version of the song: http://boosherd.googlepages.com/EarthwormJimAcrophobiaOCRemix.mp3 -
hey sup, Here's a mix I started working on this morning, so far it has two themes from the game. The first minute is a remix of the song played during the credits, and the rest is a remix of the water area. I think this sounds pretty good so far, but I'll let you guys be the judge of that. http://boosherd.googlepages.com/LostInSpace.mp3

OCR01538 - Metroid "Sugar, Water, Purple"
about:blank replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
When I first saw the title of this mix, I instantly thought of this. However I was treated to something even better. As someone who's attempted to make improvisational piano arrangements in the past, I gotta say that this is simply awesome. Nice work!
