Same opinion here, though I haven't seen Season 4 yet.

This is the best orchestra arrangement on OCR hands down. Truly epic. The sample quality is top-notch, and the choir adds a lot to the overall epic atmosphere of this song. I especially dig the brass instruments in this one; wonderful. Just one question: what is that sound in the background at 2:15? Sounds like a blip or something; it really throws me off.

WIP X-Men: Children of the Atom - House Mix
Martin Penwald replied to lazygecko's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Nice one; sounds somewhat like French house to me. Makes me bob my head. In my opinion, the bass sounds a little dry, and the synth coming in at 0:47 is a little too loud. Nice breakdown from 1:18 on; I like what you did with the piano. More of this, plz. Also, nice transition back to the main melody. -
Glad to see that this one made it on OCR. I have been downloading every single version since the WIP thread was started, and it got better and better. However, there is one thing that irks me about the final version. This song has an incredibly high level of energy, except for the part between 1:10 and 1:29. In the last version I downloaded (the loud one, hehe), this part was better, not least because of more in-game samples. Generally, I'm not really fond of voice samples in remixes, however, seeing as how I am an absolute Turtles in Time fanboy, I really love 'em in this one. Still, this is a great song, and in my opinion the best thing to come from OCR in months. I won't delete the WIP, though. PIZZATIME (Mad guitar solo)

Very nice remix. Its jazzy style reminds me of some of the songs done by po!/Joshua Morse and Red Tailed Fox. Among all the electronica, rock and orchestral remixes, songs like this one always stand out in a very positive way; I wish there'd be more of this stuff. The two things I really like about this one are the drums and the organ, as the latter adds a lot to the piece's atmosphere. Nice work.

OCR01581 - Final Fantasy V "Dark Butz"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like chiptune-ish stuff, and this song is no exception. Really diggin' the drums in this one, especially in the breakdown starting at appr. 1:52. Almost sounds like a heartbeat. Also, the melodies are woven into each other very nicely. All in all, this is a very good mash-up. Nice work. -
Btw, the demo songs you posted on the last page were incredibly awesome, especially the one by Little Bitchard.

It's all about Chun-Li. If they rape my teenage years by fucking her sprite up, I will be very displeased. VERY. However, considering it's Udon doing the art, I'm positive that they'll produce some quality work.

You have to see the "Is there anything better?" in the context of this thread. It is NOT a universally valid claim.

OMG...must download now...

BBQ, beer, and them some Third Strike on a friend's arcade machine (and some Metal Slug 3...and Bubble Bobble...). Is there anything better?

Castlevania Bloodlines - Iron Blue Intention
Martin Penwald replied to lazygecko's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Yeah, the guitars do sound fake...but I feel as if this was done on purpose. I sense some oldskool sounding remix coming up. That being said, the little piece you gave us sounds like an intro. I hope for some more stuff to comment on. -
OCR01579 - Final Fantasy VII "REAKTR.1"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice intro with an interesting choice of instruments. Once the song really starts, it does indeed remind you of sephfire's last FF7 submission, Speed Limit, although it does not have the same level of energy. Good breakdown at 2:34; again, nice instruments, lots of things going on in the background. The part following could have used a little more power; it somehow lacks a real climax. Good song, but nothing out of the ordinary. -
OCR01578 - Streets of Rage 2 "Above Reason"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I, too, am reminded of Crystal Method at the beginning of this song. The ass-kicking finally starts at 0:36. Good song from here on, especially when the original melody becomes more prominent. I dig the piano introduced at 1:42; gives it a nice, oldskool-ish feeling. Wonderful energy from 2:00 on; organ rocks. However, in my opinion, this remix sounds a little too...how should I say it..."new". As pfs said, Gecko's version captured the atmosphere and style of the original better. Anyway, this is a nice one, though not as great as the last collab by tefnek and zircon. But that's only because I love the TMNT music more than anything else from that era. -
Sweeeeeeet. When it started, i thought "Uuuh, Squarepusher breaks, not again", but then, it evolved. I really like how the track slowly and smoothly changes from breakcore to fucking gabber in the end. Yes!

today's compotune "Balalaika" dark minimalism
Martin Penwald replied to OverCoat's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Lots of distortion, indeed. Reminds me somewhat of the music CoLD SToRAGE made for Krazy Ivan. Dunno, but this incarnation has a wholly different feel to it. While the original one sounded like a smooth, electronic cyberpunk soundtrack, this one is darker, more in-your-face decay, doom, defeat & despair. All in all, the soundscape of the new version sounds fuller/richer, which is why I think it's better than the previous one. Good work. -
Well, usually I'm the first one to scream "needs more variation", but this tracks actually does work for me, and it does so exceptionally well. Furthermore, being about 3:30min, it isn't long enough to become boring/uninteresting. About the song itself, it really got me grooving from the very first time I listened to it, particulary from 1:30 and 2:33 on. I'm constantly djp'ing to it, and if that ain't a good sign, I don't know what is. Excellent song, and I hope to hear more from GSlicer in the (near) future.

NoppZ delivers again. Right from the beginning, the track has this cheesy, but wonderful 70s disco feeling to it. The part starting at 1:36 adds even more cheese to it; awesome. The strings at the end of the breakdown (up to 2:48 ) could be a little more powerful. Very weird tempo change at appr. 3:00; however, it works really well with the source tune. Not as catchy as the first part, but close to the original song. Nice drums coming in at 4:06. Here's to hope that NoppZ continues his output of amazingly well done songs in the future.
-
Nice beat you got there. The sound coming in at 0:08 gives the song some kind of oldskool feeling. The voice sample is horrible and kinda annoying. Let's see some more stuff.

OCR01573 - Chrono Trigger "Forever Until Tomorrow"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The vocal work is simply amazing; some of the best stuff I've ever heard on OCR. However, I didn't enjoy the song that much, simply because I'm really, really tired of the source tune. I hope SS will take on some other soundtracks in the future, gracing them with his incredible skills. -
Bandai-Namco released the soundtrack to their "Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune" racing game on the net. Some good songs in it (it's labelled as Trance, btw). Click me

Hexual ceiling by Transient was pretty good; I think I will give this new EP a listen.

OCR00124 - Shadow of the Beast "Journey"
Martin Penwald replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
While it is true that this mix is a little repetitive, there are various other aspects which really make up for this. The bells used in the intro and later on in this song sound very nice, and the flute it in the end adds a nice touch to the melody. I wish the drums were a little stronger, though.
