WIP: Command and Conquer - Act On Instinct
Martin Penwald replied to Spazdor's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Digging the stuttering voice sample in the beginning. Grungy drums: always a nice thing (reminds me a little of CoLD SToRAGE), but overall, I think that they are a little to grungy. It makes the track sound kinda muddy. Same with the drums that have short appearances at e.g. 1:05 and 10:8/10:9. Keep working on it; I like it so far. -
[Danger] Breakcore, a Boulderdash Remix
Martin Penwald replied to Skrypnyk's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This song has a lot of potential for playing around with the left/right panning; please do so. That would result in quite some awesomeness, me thinks. I, too, think that the sounds'n'beeps need a little more variation. Anyway, keep working on it; I'm looking forward to the next update. -
DKC3, Cave/Factory theme DnB Remix [WIP] !
Martin Penwald replied to Cyan's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Nice stuff so far, but I think that the mix is without any direction. There are a lot of ideas in it, but hardly any of them get really used. As soon as something starts, it's almost over. Furthermore, I think that the "intro" is a little to long. The song picks up speed at 1:56, and that's almost after half of the track. Too late IMO. -
OCR01502 - Final Doom "Milagro del Demonio"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm digging this very much. Nice atmospheric track; I don't know why, but it gives me a Shadowrun-esque feeling, and that is always good. Also, I don't see what's the problem with the end. Didn't sound rushed or anything to me. -
OCR01500 - Tales of Phantasia "The Koan of Drums"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice song, but I think the taikos are way too quiet/thin, except for the solo beginning at 2:45. Taikos are powerful instruments that are loud; they make your heart beat to their rhythm (at least when you listen to them live), but in this mix, they somehow drown in the other instruments. Also, the techno-esque bass drum just didn't really fit in there, but that's my very personal opinion. -
Talking about buying shirts from overseas, will there be the possibility of payment via paypal? Oh, and XL for me. Need it for my shoulders and arms.

Chrono Trigger: Guardia Forest (Collab w/Doomsday)
Martin Penwald replied to CC Ricers's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Okay, the birds are gone, but since this is a doomsday update, it doesn't really surprise me. Definitely digging the part starting at 1:38. Also, the new part from 2:22 on seems rather nice. But don't you think it's about time we get a complete outline for this mix? There have been more than a dozen updates since the first version IIRC, and we still haven't heard the end of the song. -
When I first listened to this song, it didn't work for me. But after listening to it for 3 or maybe 4 times, it started growing on me, and now I think that it is a pretty sweet piece of work. But I have one complaint: the song is toooooo damn long. It should have been made into two seperate songs; one with vocals (the part up until 3:23), and a second, instrumental one featuring the dungeon theme.

OCR00703 - Fear Effect "Cel-Shaded Geisha"
Martin Penwald replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Most of the voice samples are too hard to understand, but they certainly add to the atmosphere. And I love the song itself; it sounds very dirty and brutal. Makes me wanna play the games again. More Fear Effect love, plz. -
OCR01495 - Chrono Trigger "Town Life"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very enjoyable. Taucers guitar-work is as wonderful as always, and DJPs singing has come a long way since the infamous singing pretzel. I hope to hear more vocals from him. And I like the lyrics. Never played Chrono Trigger and probably never will, so I don't know anything about the story behind it, but the lyrics are nice and not too cheesy. -
Chrono Trigger: Guardia Forest (Collab w/Doomsday)
Martin Penwald replied to CC Ricers's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Heh, I was just thinking about bumping this. Anyway, yeah, it's time for some news about this. Glad to hear that you plan to work on the drums and the ending, because I think those are last remaining issues with this song. -
Yes, that was what I meant. I thought so.

Got back into the VGDJ thing with no.052 (nice show, though the music during the panel was hardly audible), and I hope to stay with it this time. Because the last eposide before that was 036 or something...

OCR01494 - F-Zero "The Flood Plain"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
F-Zero has one of my favourite OSTs from the SNES era, so I was in high spirits when I saw the new mix on the front page. And it didn't disappoint me. There are only two gripes I have: the first would be that the quiet section is a little too quiet, and the second is the part at 1:37/1:38. I simply don't like this style of playing that sounds as if the player hammers down his whole forearm on the keys. Overall, beautiful piece. Congrats on that one. -
OCR01491 - 7th Guest "Microscopism"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like the creepy atmosphere this one has, and the voice samples as well as the laughter add a lot to that creepiness. Well done. -
OCR01490 - Awesome "Game Over (Cheeze Mix)"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Me personally, I'm not really fond of the stop at 1:56. Kinda freaks me out. But the part beginning at 2:10 is, as stated above, pure bliss. Overall, I like the general laid-back-ness of the mix. I'm not familiar with the source tune (or so I think), but the ReMix really got me. -
OCR01488 - Star Fox 64 "V to the X Power"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I don't think it was intended, but this would make excellent BGM for some spooky castle in a RPG. Nice work. Keep it up. -
OCR01485 - Secret of Mana "Dueling Consoles"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The idea of dueling consoles is very nice, but in my opinion, this duel-theme is only audible up until 1:58, i.e. for less than half of the mix. I think it would have been more true to its name if that part had been longer. That being said, I still like the mix. It's just mindblowing what happens from 1:59 on. -
OCR01486 - Mega Man 6 "Fortress of the Knight"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice ReMix that comes of rather old-skoolish due to its source-tune, but that is actually a good point, at least in my book. I'm definitely diggin' the part from 2:08 on, very nice slow-down. -
OCR01484 - Star Control II "Lightyears Away"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The 80ies grab you from the very first second, and they don't let you go until the song is over. Wonderful, innovative, catchy stuff. -
OCR01482 - Metal Slug 2 "No Need to Reload"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Don't know what to say other than that I like it. Definitely going to my OCR-Rock-playlist. -
OCR01478 - Ghouls'n Ghosts (C64) "Poltergeist Mix"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Probably one of the best buildups/finals I've ever heard. It all grows bigger and bigger after 3 minutes until it just explodes into a mad final from 3:59. Geez, this song gives me the shivers. Great work. -
Ever since I downloaded that song from VG Mix, I've been in love with it. Very powerful stuff.
