  1. I was actually mostly referring to 'ripping off' one of your own remixes, i.e. most instruments in the commercial release would sound exactly the same as your remix, except they would all play (mostly) original melodies. I was unsure about this because I thought I had read somewhere that by submitting a remix you're basically giving OCR a certain degree of 'ownership' over your mix, but that might just have been a figment of my imagination I guess...
  2. Well the situation hasn't been really played out yet, it could very well happen that someone notifies Square about it, and they take appropriate measures. I think it could be considered a loophole if there were truly no possible way to persecute him with any success, which is not the case. Ah well, guess it all comes down to definition of 'loophole'. Edit: beaten to it Slightly offtopic, but I have a question in a similar vein as the rest of this thread (copyright issues and all). Let's say that hypothetically I have a remix posted on OCR (yeah right). What if I take this remix, remove most, if not all references to the source material ( of course the remix would have to be appropriate to allow this, but let's assume it is), replace those with original melodies etc. and then release it as an original song on a commercial album. Let's also say that the final song wouldn't sound anything like the original source tune, but it would be almost the same as the posted OCRemix, and definitely recognizable as such. Is this legal or illegal?
  3. I think he'd have a tough time denying this in court, it definitely isn't a loophole if the ripped off part is 99% verbatim with the original. Heck, even the name of the song shows where he got the idea, if Square were to settle it in court I'm pretty sure the judge would rule he'd have to pay.
  4. I don't think that's his own opinion, but rather the outcome of that one stupid "Teh Wurld's Best DeeJay Evurr"-contest. But geez, despite the fact I dislike Square for canning the fan-made Chrono Trigger remakes, I think they really ought to be notified of this rip-off. Funny how the song's quality seems to rise tenfold once Schala's theme comes in.
  5. Isn't this in the same vein as asking " I want to hear all metal/solo piano/trance/acid jazz remixes, why isn't there a search by genre feature"? I thought that kind of stuff was not added to the site on purpose.
  6. Guys, I decided to be more active in the whole OCR community thingy, and help finish up some projects. I've registered at your boards, just waiting to get accepted, then I'll post some stuff as an audition. Got some good idea's for the Stage Boss theme. :3
  7. Um ya, but my point kind of was: is it really that much harder to press buttons on a guitar-like controller and imitating a strumming motion as opposed to mashing buttons on your keyboard?
  8. So is this Guitar Hero 3 thingy harder to learn than Stepmania?
  9. Ah, I can get out of my fetal position now!
  10. Hey thanks a lot for the feedback! You're definitely right about the piano, the ostinato does tend to get a little lame (and off-key) after some time. I noticed the strings during the section around 0:40 tend to mask out the rest of the instruments, which makes it sound like the whole track goes softer and back up again, so I'll have to fix that too, I agree that the strings are a bit too up-front. Your feedback on the drums was kind of vague, did you mean the way the samples are used sounds fake or did you mean that the rhythms and fills used aren't realistic? I am in fact using 2 different crashes, 1 China and 1 Ride (Which is pretty much like a real drum-kit) that all have some pretty intricate velocity layering, so I'm guessing if it's because of the samples I have to alter the velocities a bit more. If it's something else, I'm stumped =/ Ya, production and me don't make a very good couple it seems. Edit: Some idea's that didn't make it (it's pretty funny to hear, even though it's midi, even has a totally unrelated FFVII cameo)
  11. Let there be strings! Ummm almost-definitive version I think? Apparently the stupid rattling tom sound is supposed to be there; the toms are apparently 'bleeding' into the snare's mic so it's completely realistic blah. Can't listen to it on speakers now, but on my headphones bass, kick drum and rhythm guitars are RELATIVELY DECENTLY balanced, with only the bass-drum being a bit on the thin side. Might be possible that the lower-end is still a bit muddy. =/ Things left to do: - Re-record lead guitars without Delay effects, (re)record guitar solo and make it not-sloppy etc. - Mastering and stuff like that.
  12. Whoa, I haven't yet mentioned that this is awesome?! Well take this then:" It's awesome!" Anyway, I love the instrumentation, the wood blocks and other percussion give it a very authentic feel and you're definitely nailing the PotC style you're looking for. The blowing wind and ominous bells give it a nice Elfmanish contrast, apparently you really know how to execute the idea's you have. Productionwise this is very stable too, nothing jumps out at me as jarring. What I didn't like very much was the fast jumping between different styles and instrumentations which gave it sort of a medleyish feeling. My suggestion is to play around a bit the sections you already have and possibly prolonging them before transitioning into the next one, that ought to give it a bit more consistency. Definitely keep working on it, it's awesome! (as I've said twice already =P)
  13. Ya I think what I'll do is give the guitars another boost around 4000 Hz, but I think most of the issues can be solved during the mastering session, mostly by mult-band compression. Apart from that I still have to record moar guitarz, redo the strings and I'll be more or less done. =)
  14. Yay for feedback, and a double Yay for Addictive Drums! Issues: - Weird Tom sound =/ - Piano, Strings etc. lameness - Blah Blah drums aren't compressed enough, balancing is off etc etc Fixed: - Rolled off Rhythm Guitars more, gave them mid-boost - Bass to the front - New Drum Kit!
  15. Might just be a hunch, but sometimes when I get the same problem it's either because the Wah's powersource has been disconnected while moving it (Of course, if you use batteries that wouldn't happen), or because I didn't stomp the Wah correctly, so it goes into a phase between On and Bypass, where the signal is indeed muted. Oh wait! I remember, it MIGHT have something to do with the input levels. If I recall correctly Amplitube 2 uses a noisegate that's always active, so if you have it DI'd into your Mic Entrance (Not sure of your recording chain and if it has a pre-amp)and because the fact that the Wah chops off a lot of the original signal, it might be muted because the noisegate kicks in.
  16. It definitely sounds better, and I have to say I quite like what you did with the arrangement. The drums definitely sound alright in terms of production, but they could use a lot more fills during the fast parts to prevent repetitiveness. The recording quality on the guitars sounds decent, but I can't help but hear some cracking and popping throughout the whole song. Also, I'm not sure, but your guitars seem to be out of tune. I know the judges disliked the big amount of reverb, but I think the guitars could use a slight hint of that anyway, as well as some Stereo FX to make them sound a bit less thin. Also, the left-panned piano should definitely be turned up since I can barely hear it through the other instruments. I can definitely imagine hearing some strings playing there too, would give it a nice ballady feel, and would do a lot to fill out the soundspace, which sounds a bit empty, so maybe you can try adding those. Overall I like it though, keep on it .
  17. Think. Would your friends say to your face that your music sucks? I'm not saying they're thinking that way, but I'm pretty sure a lot of their compliments come from the fact that they're your friends, and not because they think your music is that awesome (subconciously perhaps). If I would have my friends listen to my music, they're not going to say that my snare's overcompressed, they're going to say something along the lines of " Wow, you wrote this?", and say how awesome it is. My point is, if you have someone you know listen to it, they will more likely than not be biased to a certain degree. That's why you need some guy you don't even know on some internet forum to have an objective look at it, and make clear to you that your music in fact might not be as awesome as you thought. Besides, who do you think has better knowledge of production and mastering, your friends or Skrypnyk?
  18. Of all my mixes that are more or less complete now in terms of arrangement it never took more than a week to get the arrangement 95% done. The production and tweaking is a whoooole different story though.
  19. Don't take this too badly, but I think Skrypnyk does have sort of a point. You can't just say that it's close to OCR standards because you like it, you HAVE to compare it to similar songs that are in fact on OCR (at least in terms of production). Do the instruments sound as fake there? I think not. Getting it up to standards is literal. Spend a LOT more time (that goes for both of you) in fact LISTENING to OCRemixes and pondering what you still have to do to get on the same level. You shouldn't keep on fooling yourself all the time when you still have a long way to go.
  20. I think pretty much anything will do, just give us something you have a good feeling about =P
  21. Guys, I've made a decision, you haven't heard from me quite some time, which was basically because I was caught up in a lot of other remixes and projects. Believe me when I say, I have tried my best to continue with the Sephiroth mix, it just didn't work out at all, even though I continued to convince myself I would finish it sometime. I feel really bad for 'hogging' this important mix for such a long time and coming up with pretty much nothing in return, so I guess it's time to let someone more capable of doing the song justice take the reins. Yes, I'm basically dropping out, but believe me when I say it wasn't an easy decision for me to make. If it's any consolation at all, I could post the midi of what I have (About 3 minutes of material) so anyone interested could salvage from it whatever they need, you wouldn't even have to give me credit or something. Once again, I'm really sorry.
  22. Hey Avaris, me and CHIPP are thinking of collabing on one of the remaining songs (or one of the claimed songs that haven't been updated sufficiently) in a Rock/Hiphop hybrid (Think Run DMC & Aerosmith with Walk This Way), so we need something with a decently catchy hook that can be repeated a few times. Do you have any suggestions for us?
  23. Ya, production issues aside, I'd say this is a step forward. I can't say I like the chord progression during the intro. I'd say you could aim for another mellow section after the drummy stuff. Drums are sequenced kind of awkwardly, the crashes and fills don't make much sense. Keep on it though.
  24. Depending on how you generally record your playing (i.e. One whole guitar track in one take or separated in a few different sections) it could vary, but I can't really see what's so hard about recording all necessary tracks, exporting them to .WAV, sending them to your desktop in any way you prefer, and editing them there.
  25. yaaaaaaaaaaaay update! New features include: - New Lead Guitars ® - Beefed up Jordan Rudess-style lead synth - Played around with the balancing of the different channels a bit - Kick-ass though sloppy fast arpeggial tapping guitar solo (This is the second half, the first half still has to be recorded)
