  1. eval Still sounds like a midi mockup. Decent piano sound, no problem there, but the performance isn't very convincing. I can hear variation in velocity, but that's mostly between individual melody lines or voices, not within phrases. There's also no timing variance, which is also something used (unavoidably) by actual performers. I don't think there's any use of pedal, either. Additionally, this seems to be a three-handed piece, as best as I can figure. Not a huge problem, but deliberately four-handed (as in for two pianists) or downscaled to two-handed would make more sense. That's far from the biggest concern, though. Good choice of source, and I think it works quite well as a piano piece. It seems to be quite conservative, but I'm not terribly familiar with the sources and what makes each unique and different. As an adaptation for piano it's a lot more about the performance and the embellishments rather than overall structural transformations. So I can't say whether it's too conservative. Transitions are rather abrupt at times, e.g. at 1:27 and 3:32. Dramatic changes between sections aren't a problem, but it has to flow better than that. A solo piano track needs a good performance. A more thorough arrangement-focused review could tell you if the arrangement itself is passable after transitions are dealt with, in which case you could ask a pianist on the site to play it. They'd also be able to provide better feedback on the arrangement in regards to it being playable, something that's well beyond what I can say. What I can tell you is that in its current state it won't be posted. Yeah, I find the stiff performance the biggest problem here. It's something you seem to struggle with, a recurring thing with your wips. I suggest you either work towards improving your performance skills (either actual performance, or faking it by manually humanizing sequenced material), or shift to a genre where the sense of performance comes from sound design more than from the notes themselves, or both. Whatever you do, good luck.
  2. [This is an automatically generated message] I've reviewed your remix and have returned it to Work-in-Progress status, indicating that I think there are some things you still need to work on. After you work on your track and feel that it's ready for submission to OCR, please change the prefix back to Ready for Review and someone will review it again. Good luck!
  3. I see a lot of bumps in this thread. eval I'm immediately struck by how bright and loud it starts. You might want to tone that down slightly. Doesn't take me long to hear that it's too loud. I don't mean the loudness itself is the problem, but it leads to problems because the mix isn't made to be this loud. Do some EQ cuts to lower frequencies the tracks don't need (lows, mostly). Decide which tracks are foreground and which ones aren't, and give the lead instruments a bit more room by cutting their important frequencies from the background tracks a bit. That should give you a cleaner sound without you having to turn down the master. Instrumentation is simple, reminiscent of the original Sonic games. I don't mind. But the mixing would have to be better for this to pass. Arrangement starts off very close to the original. But with new melodies, then new sections, new stuff I can't connect to the source. It sounds like Sonic stuff, but I can't say whether it's from this source, from a different source, or is original additions. Someone better versed in the Sonic series' music might be able to provide better feedback on that. I think this is a good mixing practice track. My advice would be to keep working on the sound, perhaps redo the levels and effects entirely (do take a backup save first), get your mixing skills up to par. Whether this track will pass after that or not, those mixing skills will be useful for other tracks.

  5. From what the others have said, this track sounds like something I'd wanna hear. But your link has disappeared. Maybe you deleted the original. I'll mark this as wip for now, feel free to provide a working link and change it back to ready for review if you want a staff evaluation.

  7. eval Well, I like it. I like the sound design. The arrangement is indeed much like the original tune, so as an ocr style ReMix it's likely a no go. But as a sound upgrade, it's a rather good one. The reverb is much too heavy, the snare is really weak, the instruments crowd out each other in the frequency spectrum. I think some general mix techniques would be useful for you. You know, cut lows from where they aren't needed, decide which tracks are foreground and which ones are background and give them levels and frequency range priority accordingly. This is stuff I don't expect hearing damage would prevent learning and using, since most of those operations would be in the <5kHz range. This wouldn't pass the panel. Not in its current state, at least. I don't think something this conservative in terms of arrangement would pass, despite the added harmonies and embellishments. So, a decent sound upgrade that also serves as good mixing practice, but probably not an OCReMix-style arrangement.

  9. Apologies for the late evaluation. Can't say when this was marked for eval, but I suspect we were quite late regardless. Anyway... It is too loud. I don't mind it being garbled and warped in places, since that's clearly intentional. But I can't tell if the loudness is. At 0:54 when the level drops, some noise similar to clipping noise also drops, suggesting it is indeed too loud. I'm also noticing some really distracting compression issues at around 2:20. So on the production side, there's stuff to do. You might be able to clear some headroom with EQ-ing out the lows from the instruments that don't need them, and being a bit more selective about levels and frequency balance overall (which would also bring out some of the background instruments some more). But if that doesn't work, cutting the overall level by a few dB should take care of the overcompression and clipping issues. The arrangement is cool. I like this sort of creepy take on the source. There's a few sections where the dissonance seems like poor writing rather than intentionally unsettling, like at 1:10. I really like the calmer sections, when the production issues related to loudness aren't getting in the way, but also just for how the track moves from soft to loud. The ending is a little weak. It could use a little more signalling before the 4:55 final note, e.g. with a tempo slowdown or a cymbal crescendo or something. I think the instrumentation is fine. The weakest is the lead, which sounds like a string ensemble used as a lead. Layering it with a more solo performance sounding string lead could resolve that issue, but there are other solutions, including leaving it as it is. Though any solution would still require better mixing in order to pass the panel.
  10. Thanks for the video feedback. I don't think I'll be changing the colors much for this, but I like the idea. I'll definitely choose different colors for other tracks. I'm also glad you like the track. -- I also realized this probably belongs in the post your art subforum. Oh well. Mods can move it when they feel like it. -- Updated link to newer version. Less compression artifacts.
  11. This is great news. My problem with making jazz has always been the mixing.
  12. Hi y'all. I made a visualizer type video I intend to use for uploading my remixes to YT. I already know one flaw, but see if you can catch it. Or if you catch something I haven't. Come critique it to bits, help me make it better! -- Most recent test:

  14. If it still needs work (such as "compression reverb eq"), it's not Ready for Review. You've done this with several of your threads, GSO. Don't mark stuff for review until they are actually ready to be submitted. Staff evaluating your track is supposed to be a final checkup before submitting, not a general call for feedback. (The automatic message suggests RfR is for any feedback. It's not. We need to change that.)
  15. It's in my sig but just to make it a little more visible: Chernabogue's ocr project guide aka Creating & Helping OCR Projects 101.
  16. I see you, ACO. I see you. Album projects have gotten stupidly ambitious. It'd be nice to see more shorter albums. One disc, some central tracks, unremixed pieces, remixers' favorites, themed around the bad guys or locations or something, done within a year or so by a handful of remixers who each do multiple tracks for a more cohesive sound. If I ever do another album, that's my approach. Narrow focus, small scope. Much easier. And maybe a stickied album requests thread in the remix requests, or a resurfacing album requests thread here in community could inspire people to make more shorter album projects. Nothing says they have to be ocr-style, either. Posted remixers can pimp them here anyway, and there are other outlets for this stuff too, eg reddit. Mods, thoughts? If you're particularly interested in the Rocket Knight Adventures album, necroing the album thread is showing interest. I liked how the sd3 project thread saw activity from people hoping and waiting for it. I'm sure others working on album project feel the same way about theirs. Even if the project is dead, thread activity can inspire remixers to have a look at the tracklist and maybe do a remix from the game independent of the album. So it's a remix from the game, even if it's not a whole album.
  17. Hi, I gave the tracks a quick listen. The heavier parts could use improved production. The choice of drum sounds don't quite have the aggression of the guitar, and the guitar could have more bite to it. The performance sounds fine to me; it's a mixing and sound design issue I'm hearing. Four Months sounds really down to earth and nice. There's a background noise in the drums, but for a track like that I don't mind it. It just sounds more organic, more alive that way. Might be annoying on headphones though. The melodies do indeed seem inspired by the snes era. I like that.
  18. Maybe I'll have a look at those available tracks.
  19. This is superb. I probably said it better in the track comments in the album download, but I want to reiterate how cool this track is. It's a great source, and you've done it justice. Well done, guys.
  20. Are you talking about the staccatos or the electric bass? My writing all of it, except for the last minute or so, which is Moz'. Unless he changed something in my writing. It was a long time ago, I don't remember. I don't think he did. And it wouldn't have been as great without your instrumentation. Well done!
  21. You guys rock! This track makes me feel like a badass listening to it. Well done, gentlemen.
  22. I'll reiterate - it's lovely. Well done, both of you. I'm especially digging the percussion today.
  23. Each time I've listened to this, I've had goosebumps and/or tears. Today is no exception. Gentlemen, well done.
