  1. Whether or not it's a good thing, yeah, that's technically 'sexist'. Whether or not it's acceptable is another issue entirely, but people who are trying to reduce everyone's 'sexist' argument (and for that matter racist) to 'it's violent/hateful' is really simplifying the argument and creating strawmen, in the process. There are plenty of things that could still be hurtful to society in one way or another without being spiteful or violent. No I haven't heard of it... wow, that's incredibly gay.
  2. ... what? That's not even close to what anyone is saying in thi what the hell are you talking about? Well, since you pulled a picture where a woman's nipples are punching through her suit... thing, let's roll with it. Post a corresponding picture where the detailed outline of a mans dick can be seen through his tight spandex pants in a video game. If you find that picture, then proceed to tell me that it wouldn't make you feel uncomfortable to be forced to look at the character's junk for the whole game. Some men would probably be able to do that without any issue (and some others could even enjoy it), but that would seriously reduce the male gamer base from playing the game, overall... which is analogous to one problem with hardcore gaming and women.
  3. No it's not. It's the act of treating someone differently based solely on the fact that they're a part of another race. Similarly, sexism is the act of treating someone differently based solely on the fact that they're a part of another gender. Hatred and intolerance are certainly a part of these ideas, but they certainly don't cover the entire gamut.
  4. That's because we're talking about gaming in an online gaming forum. There aren't that many women to talk about the issue because women generally are not as interested in gaming as men. The fact that I could count the women I know on this forum on the fingers of my hands should only serve to reinforce this. Catering to men only further removes real women from our medium, which really, really sucks for everyone involved in the end, male and female alike. If you claim that there is no problem with females being removed from the medium in this manner, let me ask if you've ever heard this question before... "You're a gamer? Why don't you go out and get a girlfriend, instead?" or the like. See, if women were able to partake in the activity as much as men then you wouldn't need to give up or hide your passion in order to balance your love life, as it could be an activity you share with them. There are exceptions to this where women actually do enjoy gaming with their boyfriends, and it's wildly awesome when you find someone like that, but it's still a rare exception - most women still do not want to be around men when they're enjoying games, which isn't ideal when it comes to relationships. Wouldn't it be nice if being an active gamer didn't mean often finding difficulty holding a relationship due to not spending enough time with your girlfriend? Give that some thought before you claim there's no harm in alienating the female audience - most other activities (even other male dominated activities such as playing a contact sport) don't have this stigma on them. That's at least one thing that's a horrible consequence to sexism in gaming that even affects us male gamers negatively.
  5. Draconator, don't worry about whether or not it's an OCReMix style track - he's just trying to show off his work on this forum. Nothing wrong with covers as long as he's not planning on submitting it to the site (which he didn't make any claim to). I also don't hear too much trouble with the chords - they work fine where they are. Personally, I liked the sexy organ-like synths combined with the snapping of the fingers - it gives it a nice bedroom vibe. The piano doesn't fit as much with that vibe, but otherwise I think this was a nice little track. Thanks for sharing - it was pretty good.
  6. Yeah, Crystal Snail was an awesome theme. Hence why I chose that as my Maverick the last round. Well, that and the fact that it had pretty complicated meters, and it created a situation where my opponents would get messed up trying to mix my theme with theirs. I'm awesome like that.
  7. Interesting switch-up in the middle there, going from MM3 to MM2 - an interesting approach to the themes, there. Kind of an odd transition, though :/. Please keep your personal music threads in this forum, though. Double posting in here and in Community is spamming.
  8. Haha, I love that write-up. "This is not a challenge! 7+ minutes will create more scrutiny in the panel! (DON'T) DO IT!!" This is an epic track, though. Seriously pushes everything and more in your face, and I love every minute of it. I... don't have much to say about it, really - the fact that OCR bend it's rules around just so it could include the mix should give you a hint as to how awesome it is.
  9. I don't know if this counts or not, but there's a remix that has a pretty heavy 'Dies Irae' presence, as well. May or may not be relevant, but it's cool, regardless (gotta thank Dhsu for pointing that one out to be a few years back ).
  10. As per the rules, please don't mark something as 'Mod Review' unless you feel it's in a state that you can submit the music. Mod Review is not there to mark music that you feel needs a critique, but for music that you feel could be submitted to OCR and want to know what a judge might say about the track. Everyone wants people to critique their music on here. Don't abuse the system to try to get a few extra critiques for yourself, please, as that adds an unnecessary workload for the Workshop Moderators. I'll comment on the song later - there are significant improvements, but I'm a bit busy working on other things to give you a detailed response.
  11. Nah, the next compo is the GMRB. It would've been a nice segue, though.
  12. One day I will get to this. Unfortunately not now, but this Contra Hard Core had one of the best soundtracks on the system. That and Castlevania: Bloodlines. Both amazing games on the Sega with the music to back them up.
  13. Well, newbie drum tracks are specifically shot down in the submissions page, so that's well covered. Your question covers a bit of a grey area on here. It's really something that's taken on a case-by-case basis on here. If the samples are used in a creative way that contribute to the track without dominating the track, then it will probably be alright. The best approach to take is to make the track and bring it to one of the moderators or judges and asking them if it's acceptable. There's no hard and fast rule against sampling the music - you'll just have to use your intuition and ask if the samples are being used in a creative and non-obstructive manner for the rest of your remix. If they're supplementary in nature and are not too prevalent (the standards do specify the music shouldn't primarily be made of game SFX, which includes sampled music), then go for it. Just check in with someone before you submit, is all.
  14. ... I never even thought of it that way. Hahaha... In all seriousness, though, it's primarily due to the fact that the neck lengths of a violin/viola are quite small in comparison to a standard guitar, so it's much easier to travel along the neck & between strings when there's a fifth between strings.
  15. Epic picture. It IS Emu's birthday now though, right? I'm allowed to celebrate now without getting the dreaded stopwatch treatment? Alright good, happy birthday, man!
  16. I know this isn't strictly Battletoads, per se, but Level 99 and I have a Battletoads & Double Dragon remix that might help ease your Battletoads malnourishment. I don't have anything directly from the Battletoads game, but I have seen a few things floating around with the surfing theme in the WIP boards, some time ago. Jarski had one up in particular that was pretty neat, but he took it down. Hit him up and see if he could provide the track for you. Hope this helps get you some Battletoads satisfaction.
  17. Another thought - when lining up either your compo or his (pending on who starts what first), either of you could be mindful of who's in what bracket, then place people in a bracket that's the alternate to the weeks that the person is mixing in the other compo. I hope that's coming across clearer than I think it is.
  18. Man, Coop has a lot of power in regards to these matters. Well, I'll take a little initiative and say Happy Birthday anyway. He'll get here, soon enough, and when he does he'll validate my birthday wishes.
  19. Sure, there are plenty of people on here that could put out as good (or better) quality than you're suggesting (me included). KingYakko is using General MIDI as his output. Most of us use some better quality samples to make our music sound as good as can be. What are you asking people to do, how much usic should be produced, is there any pay involved, etc.?
  20. A mystery unlocked, after three years of participating actively on this site. Thanks a lot, I have no clue why I couldn't figure that out.
  21. Nah, I can see the video alright. Personally, I'm glad to see more people interested in the oldest musical game that I can think of. Makin' more people aware of this is always fun. Also, I'm glad you found another recording of the Battle Trenches - I seriously couldn't find anything.
  22. Sam Ascher-Weiss chiptunes are accompanied by the talented piano work of... Sam Ascher-Weiss. You're playing with yourself, and I eargasmed because of it. Can't wait for the release.
  23. Or get 64 people to sign up, and have this incredibly ironic naming convention for the compo - Sonic 64.
