The Extra Credits thread!! EC is amazing!
Gario replied to big giant circles's topic in General Discussion
... holy shit, dudes. Give me a minute to pick my jaw up and re-attach it to my head, 'cause it just fell to the floor. Glad to hear that they're lending an ear to what you said. I guess you got em' when you said their bottom line was being damaged, but I digress... I hope this isn't something where they get in your face and threaten to shut down your project or something for speaking out against them (it's a real possibility, folks), but I'll be an optimist, here. Awesome work. -
The Extra Credits thread!! EC is amazing!

You do know what a self fulfilling prophesy is, right (if I recall, you have a degree in psychology)? If companies advertise that gamers are *fill in the blank* then gamers will generally trend towards that behavior, in response. That's a pretty well known effect, in social psychology. By the way, I didn't say that gamers are not partly to blame - they had to start the schema for the companies to catch onto it. I'm saying that as long as the companies continue to portray their customers as they do the gamers will tend to act like the stereotype that's given to them. One really needs to cave before the other can follow. -
Well, that was actually kind of fun. Strange.

Here's a relevant little ditty for you. Who's to blame, the audience for holding true to that behavior or the adds for reinforcing that behavior? Doesn't matter who started being the idiots, if the media perpetuates it people will continue to act like it. Stop the generalizations and schemas around the gamer audience and the audience will follow suit & behave like normal human beings. -
Got nothin' online yet, don't worry about me.

Some general pimping of the PRC/ORC compos would certainly help. Word of mouth also helps the compos a lot - if you're talking to someone via IRC/IRL/whatever offering them to participate would help a lot. That really helped keep ORC afloat this round, for sure, and I'm betting that would help the PRC compo, as well. Still, I wonder why there's been such a dry spell on both those compos for so long. Is it that the normal participants have moved on and there's no one to fill in the void? I know that happened on ORC, at least (Willrock, Protodome, where'd you go?!), but others have come to fill that space. PRC just needs some more fresh blood to fill the space, I suspect.

Ha! He got donations to support his case and is planning to fight Sony with it? At the end of the day, I can see some very, very happy lawyers from both sides of the fence (I mean, where do you think all this money is going?), but I'm not seeing this ending well for either party (one is facing a long, arduous legal road, the other is facing a tarnished reputation over this).

Dayum, man, you've produced some real sex on here. If the director of the Sonic project says it's freakin' awesome, then it really must be awesome. I think the bells (is that a sin/square with a hard attack?) could be mixed down so it doesn't stick out so much, but that's a really, really easy fix. You need to have a real ending to this, bro - it sounds unfinished, there. If you finished it you could easily have a spot on the front page with this one.

Nice drum beat Sorry you couldn't quite make it. You can still vote, though - we have two people this round, so it's not a triviality, this time .

The most awkward cringe-inducing video game ad ever

lawl gay marriage is gay Really, though... What the hell is this game? I would think people would have better things to do than to play this game with their spouse/date. Like sex. Or something. -
Bionic Commando ReMixed: OK, We'll Groove - History
Gario replied to Brandon Strader's topic in Projects
Alright, after so long I'm finally getting something significant done with my track. The format that I used to use really doesn't allow me to do much with it, so I'm basically remaking my template from scratch and moving my arrangement to it. Just an FYI - there's something a-comin', from me. -
OCR02189 - Chrono Trigger "The Frog Dance"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Woah, holy shit, I remember this from AGES ago on the boards. Glad to see that this is seeing the light of day, here. Great job, bro. You've really beefed up the sound on this one, here, and yet have kept true to the arrangement you originally had. That drum work is very, very awesome in this version. There are a few synths that sound a bit raw, imo, but overall they work pretty well. I still miss that sword sound, though. It was just... so... awesome. -
Reading your spoilers shows me that you haven't played through it a second time. There are some very interesting twists made in the second run through (both good and bad, not going to say what, though). Not to mention that you can finally destroy the Ancient Caves (along with the awesome final boss that makes his reappearance). Just sayin' - it will both satisfy some of what you want and make you upset at a few other plot changes, so beware

PRC189 - It's A Me in A Mario Kart (Mario Kart Wii). Winner Announed!!
Gario replied to Bundeslang's topic in Competitions
Hmmm... Maybe tonight I can come up with something for this one. Hopefully someone else will join me...? That's a big maybe, though - this is a pretty strange source. EDIT: Ack, not happening. Got back too late, leave too early in the morn'. Sorry, guys. -
The track has been updated, for those interested. Almost done, just need to write the end. There's some heat on the upper-mids that I will fix later, so no need to point it out (unless you want to, of course, but I already know 'bout it). Hope your girl troubles aren't gettin' you down, Hewhoisiam.

Welcome to OCR, newb. Alright, certainly not a bad first mix post, here. There's a good deal to like in this (some synthwork, solid drum sound) as well as things you need to work on (other synthwork, production). Let's break it down. I like a lot of your synths, personally - the synths that seem to be active with the modulation & processor effects, in particular. They keep me wanting more. The synths that are raw saw (or otherwise plain) don't work too well, in this context, and they're used so often as the main lead that they're impossible to escape. While the other elements are relatively well balanced, you bring that saw out to the front so hard it causes clipping like crazy. The drum is fairly solid, but it's a pretty boring four-to-the-floor beat, there. While there's nothing wrong with that style, it just won't work on the entire track like you have it (especially if you don't have any hats to fill it out better). The arrangement is pretty simple and conservative. Not a bad thing if you're not shooting for an OCR posting (which you're not), but too conservative is a problem if you're looking to be posted. It's something to think about, if you plan on being posted. I like the conservative nature of this one personally, though. Overall I hear a potentially good mix out of this (although never postable, due to arrangement issues). Very nice - be sure to fix up those bad leads and hot mixing sections, and you'll have a pretty rockin' mix.

Once again, we've got two days! Here's hopin' Chroxic (got it spelled right, this time) pulls through with an awesome track, and Geeky Stoner seems to have something coming along, too, so I think we can look forward to a voting period, this time! Man, I haven't done that in ages (especially since I forgot to, last time I could, lol).

I don't think there's anything 'new', music-wise - everything that I heard that wasn't a remake of Lufia 2 tracks seem to be remakes of old Lufia 1 areas. Lufia battle 1 isn't the only original Lufia track they remixed in this game.

Quite a few of these goin' on the WIP boards, eh? I dig that - it's an awesome source. Let's see what's going on with this guy. Instruments are very dry. I hear some delay on the violins, but it needs a little more reverb on the acoustic channels, there. I also recommend reversing the panning on the violins through bass - from high to low in an orchestra it traditionally goes from left to right, not right to left. It's not a big deal (most people won't care), but it's worth noting. Also, since you're going for more a chamber orchestra effect I'd knock the panning down a notch or two - there's not going to be that much space between the instruments in a real performance. Very tasteful remix and arrangement, though. I like the drum/string combo, and the light synth choir is a nice touch. The piano arrangement of the theme is nice (and it does take it's liberties with the theme, too, which is nice). I hear it in the background of 0:38 on, as well, and it's really quite cool. Unfortunately, it's very faint. Bring that up a few decibels for us - I'm sure everyone would like to hear the piano wankery that occurs there. Nice start on this one. The instruments work well in this one, and the arrangement takes it into quite a few nice areas. Waitin' on the next update .

Length of Time to Complete a Song?
Gario replied to Souliarc's topic in Music Composition & Production
Rexxz's number is fairly accurate, but it really depends on the music and presets a person has. If I'm well set up (thank God for my own studio setup) I can get about a minute every two hours, but depending on the piece it can take more (more effects heavy electronica) or less (pure orchestra/less effects heavy music). 50-60 hours on a single minute is a bit long (referring to the OP, there). Be sure that you're not spending too much refining and fine tuning a piece that isn't finished. It should have clean production, but no final polish should be applied until the whole song is finished. There's just too much time wasted when you invest time in a part of the song that ends up being removed in the compositional process. That's my two cents, there. -
Nario's Ultimate Dance Pad Thread (Playing Super Mario Bros. 3 next!)
Gario replied to Nario's topic in General Discussion
For most people, saying someone could beat them at a game with your feet would be an insult. For most people. Not with you. I'm waiting patiently for you to take down that game, man. I hope your plan of attack works. -
Nah, I know mine wasn't checked (one of the perks of Box.net), so no one at the panel would know if mine was passable or not. I'm fairly happy with it, all things considered, but that'll be a surprise the J's will find in a month or so. I'm not worried about that - if it passes it passes, just like anything else on OCR - it's an overall mindset that's bothersome.

I'm not really heated over the dude making the article (hey, he won't go reading the thread about this, I'm sure). I'm just a little disappointed that his sources ignored everyone else whom were putting effort in it (don't know who it is, won't make any assumptions), time assumptions included (I looked at that, already). It represents a rather not-nice mindset about non-posted peeps, is all, if attempts by non-posties are simply brushed off as nothing real significant. Yeah, I'm venting 'bout it now and probably won't think anything of it the next day, but read between the lines of that source, there. Intentional or not, it's not a very nice sentiment coming from there. I won't go on about it (ranting about it will make me an ass, really), but I just want to point it out. (btw, the is really a movie quote (see 0:21), so don't take that too personally, there... I can understand that doesn't translate well over the internet)

Aww HORSESHIT!! I mean it's great to see that they recognize the hard work that went into the music from their games, and all, but this line is a bit of a punch in the face... I'm assuming he's talking about Zircon and Willrock, in that case (since they're the first two to respond), but what about the other people to send their offerings to the PICO gods above? I'm counting not one, but two people who've also announced finishing remixes on other tracks from that system that are not getting a nod, here. What, efforts from non-posted mixers aren't a 'true' enough attempt to remix a track? No grudge against those involved, but that sorta' hurts, man.
