Composer and Sound Designer looking for game projects
Gario replied to Anthony Morgan's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
Well, to be fair, not too many people post to advertise sound design here (most of us stick to composition). From the demo, I may in fact be able use for someone who's into sound design, one day (but not for some time, so don't PM me about it yet). However, like Rozo is implying, you're trying to sell milk to a cow, here, when it comes to composition. People come in here from time to time to offer jobs to composers (non-profit, mostly, but I've seen some for profit, as well), so you can come by periodically and check to see if people are looking for composers. You can also offer yourself to one or more of the projects that are run here, if you'd like. Otherwise, yeah, we're all lookin', here. Good luck with your search . -
Yeah, I remember the drama about this whole internet episode on here. However, it turns out that someone who was holding onto the 99% beta finally released it to the public. I've played the hack a little bit to make sure that it wasn't the alpha that's been around for a couple years and can verify that this is at least the version that CEMemorial posted videos about years ago, if not more complete than that. Here's a link (courtesy of Gollgagh). I don't know the creators of the hack's response to this yet, nor do I know of how Square-enix will respond (if they do). Since the leak was anonymous I hope they don't get any flak for it, but I am glad to be able to play this. Any thoughts on the release of the game, or on the C&D, or... well, anything CE related? Let's try to keep the 'Squeenix' hate to a minimum, here, since there are already threads that bash them well enough. EDIT: On second thought, the C&D discussion was a pretty hot topic on that other thread. Let's just stick to the game itself, for this thread.

Ah, you never fail to disappoint.

The Extra Credits thread!! EC is amazing!

That means that another new episode should be out... tomorrow. Admittedly, this episode made me a little hungry with all the references to dinner. Very interesting (and unexpected) topic, though. -
finished Reminiscent Choices - Super Mario 64 File Select Remix
Gario replied to TheReverend's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Have you tried PM'ing some of the guitarists here? Level99, Fishy, LuketheXjesse, Nintenjoe (jabond23, here)... there are quite a few to pick from, so I'm sure at least someone would be willing to help ya out. -
Now that Magfest is over and this compo only has roughly a week before it closes, I'm sure that it's time to get down on the ORC, guys! ... Guys?

Hope to see y'all next year! Sounded like fin, this time around.

Hey, it's mah fellow Reason user! Happy birthday!

I hear some of the changes, and they're for the better (awesome piano, the lead is fatter, I believe), but it still seems like the mix isn't spacious enough (a.k.a. it's still overcompressed). Perhaps less so, but it's still there. Hmm... try bypassing the compressor, for a moment. Perhaps it's not overcompression, but a type of clipping or limiting that we're hearing (and I'm not talking about the sidechain - I know that's intentional). Could you upload it in a downloadable format? I'd like to run it in Audacity and study the wavelength a little bit and see it I can give you some more detailed feedback based on that.

Talk to Bahamut... but chances are the answer is 'no', since the hard final deadline passed about two weeks ago. He's trying to get the album released sometime early April and bLiNd needs the time to master the tracks, so at this point the odds are kinda slim.

AIM's up and running, whenever you have time.

Had it, working on getting it again, gimme a sec. A hard drive fry took care of all my old insta-messaging stuff a while back.
-
Well, you could send it my way and I can check it out. I'm not quite a 'newb', but I think I can still be helpful (plus I can send it to my younger brother, who is still a newb, and get his feedback on it, as well).
-
Well, there's always my mixes. R:TS has already been covered, but Newgrounds also has some VG remixes that you can't hear anywhere else (as long as they're not stolen, that is... the site is pretty notorious for that ). /shameless self promotion

Propellerhead ReCycle problems
Gario replied to big giant circles's topic in Music Composition & Production
Well, by the looks of the program it seems to use a form of temporal gestalt formulation, so errors like that are to be expected. The short answer, though (for those that don't want to read the source) is that the program detects the difference in change of wavelength before and after a particular point, and compares it to another point in the sound file. For the points that 'obviously' should be parsed, notice that those portions are relatively rounded, so the program doesn't detect it as a parse, while the 'WTF' moments probably have a sharp contrast in a small area (unnoticeable in the picture because of how it's compressed). I'm not making excuses for the program (I just fought with the program for my last remix), but perhaps that might help answer what is wrong with the program (and others like it). -
wip Final Fantasy 6 - Dancing Mad Final Form in Metal
Gario replied to Caer Seraphim's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
... A title that says 'Final Fantasy 6 - Dancing Mad Final Form in Metal', and people didn't come pouring in so check it out? Damnit, what is this forum coming to?! Let's hear what you've got going, here. Strong start, here - Kefka's Tower with screaming and a solid beat. Some of the synths (like the climax synths) are lo-fi, but otherwise it's pretty epic. Loved it. Then the guitar comes in. That guitar is terrible. I mean 'I-need-to-rip-my-eardrums-out' terrible. A shame, because the remix has potential. Please get better synths or (ideally) a guitar player. The synths are all over the place. The volumes + qualities are inconsistent, but for the most part they're very thin and low quality. The drums are almost non-existent (except for the synth bass, while neat, are way overused). Get a variety of sound in here. The bass is actually really cool sounding. I couldn't hear it the first time around, but upon hearing it it's pretty cool. Overall, while conservative, I think it's a cool arrangement. You need to work through the soundscape problems that I mentioned, though. I hear quite a few awesome ideas (as well as possibly one of the best intro ideas ever), but the instrument quality doesn't do this justice. You should look in some of the tutorials on this site in order to find better samples. Don't take the criticism too hard - I wouldn't be hard if I thought it was a lost cause. There is a cool remix under the production quality, so let's see if you can bring it out. -
♫ Bahamut, oh he's got the bluuuuues... ♫

Not familiar with the ... oh wait, you posted it in the Follin project thread, let's see...HOLY SHIT, that's an awesome tune. Once again, I'm impressed with his amazing chiptune/sequencing skills. Let's see how yours holds up (it won't be easy - that's the problem with remixing Follin music). First thing I notice is an amazing use of effects. Very neat. The deep bass is also effective. The lead, while phased and stuff, seems a little weak and thin compared to the rest of the track. You'll need to beef that out somehow (use a fatter synth, make it louder, compress it, etc.). The overall production sounds very overcompressed. You'll need to lighten up on the compression, there (it's a problem I tend to have, too, so I know your pain). The sounds blend together too much, so the overall effect is almost a sound soup. A shame, because you have a lot of great things going on in this. It sounds like you could really continue on for a bit longer on this one. The ending right now sounds incomplete, for some reason. Let's see where it want's to go, here - it leaves me wanting more. Very nice track. If you expand it and fix the lead + overcompression issues I think you'll have a great tribute to Follin, here.

wip "Jetcopter" Contra Hard Corps Electronic-Metal
Gario replied to Mak Eightman's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Sweetness, a Contra Hardcore remix... not only that, but it's one of the coolest tunes from the game. Sweetness. Solid guitar sound. I like the simple, bang your head metal. Good work with that. Most of the effects are well placed, and those that are not that great (some of the synths in the background that I hear...?) are not that noticeable, anyway. Now, one issue that I have is that it takes a very long time to really get into the source (1:35), which isn't justified by the length of the song (3:39). A rule of thumb - if you're going to have a long intro, be sure that it's roughly 1/4 - 1/5 of the song. Right now your intro is about 1/2, so it's awkward, overall makes the track lack source and makes it feel too short. Not that I don't like the intro, mind you - it's a pretty awesome intro - but because of it's length it causes problems to the overall song. The drum sequencing (especially the hats) are pretty mechanical. You'll need to tweak the velocities and volumes to have them sound a bit more human, there. The production value is pretty good on this one. I think you could tone the highs down a touch on the master track (it sounds a little crowded in that area), but overall it's alright. Nice work. It still needs a bit more, though, so don't stop here - it certainly has a shot, but not in it's current state. Contra Hardcore is certainly awesome, so I'm glad you're giving it a shot. -
Well, on the upcoming album there are TWO Buffalo remixes (one of which is Lv 99's fabled remix). There was supposed to be a Toxic Seahorse remix by Zircon and Lv 99, as well, but by the looks of it that one fell through. Hopefully that album will be available to you in April sometime. On the other hand, there are two excellent Toxic Seahorse remixes in the WIP forums. Check em' out.

Huh... well, that first deadline is coming up, and I see some great tracks that haven't been claimed yet (The strongest man, The Silent World, Four Gods...). Hopefully, people will see that this project is very much alive and kicking and get inspired to contribute their great ideas to the project before the gates close. Let's see some excitement, here - there are already some amazing tracks formulating by bLiNd, Dragon Avenger and Abadoss (not to mention myself, not to boast or anything ). Let's all get involved in this - Lufia 2 has some great tracks that need some representation!

Have fun, all. I'll see you down there NEXT year .

Why else would you bump a thread?
