  1. By my own failure to sensibly plan for this, I'm going to resign. For some reason I thought the thread title being Phase One as well as the first post meant that Phase 2 had not started yet. I was also sure the due date was September 12th. I can't read. But whoever challenged me to do that song, if you still really want me to do it, I'll do it. PM me later and remind me.
  2. This is the most awesome advice I have seen given by someone with a Sonic The Hedgehog forum avatar. Macs are crap for budget. C R A P . You want a machine with a good processor, that's where the bulk of your music stuff is going to go for your computer to take the stuff you write into your DAW all the way to your soundcard (and out to speakers). Video card is not important. At all. You'll do fine with the graphics processor inside the Core i5 or Core i7 sandy bridge processors. If you want a desktop powerhouse for your budget, contact "prophetik" on the forums for a recommendation, and he'll build it for you for cheaper than a retailer if you choose to request that. (PM him). If he doesn't respond, ask me, though I can't build one for you. You'll have to find someone you know who can interpret my recommendation and act on it. PM me if you're still interested. I can give a general recommendation with a few specific parts right now, but for all specific parts we need to talk one on one (I would strongly recommend asking prophetik instead if he is available): -Core i5-2500k $220 (PROCESSOR) -Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H motherboard ~$130 (MOTHERBOARD) -16GB RAM DDR3 ~$80 (the market for these is dropping insanely, so they're super cheap) (RAM) -500W Power Supply ~$60-70 (POWER SUPPLY) -1TB HDD (more or less if you so desire) $90 (HARD DRIVE) -a dvd drive $20 (DVD) -obviously a chassis like an Antec 300 ~$60 (CASE) -a nice HD monitor ~$150 (MONITOR) -Windows 7 $100 (OS) -Keyboard and Mouse (simple) ~$30-40 (KB&M) Puts you at $960, roughly. Give or take. You can figure that out with whoever is giving you your part recommendations. If you want a pre-built system, you'll have to sacrifice some power to stay in your budget. Here are the specs of my machine I put together. Keep in mind, this price is not including Windows, and heavy deal surfing. $989 Intel Core i7-2600 G.Skill Sniper 8GB DDR3 RAM EVGA GTX 460 1GB Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB HDD Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3 Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler Cooler Master Storm Scout Chassis ASUS 21.5" HDMI Ultra-Slim Monitor LG 24X DVD Drive OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w PSU
  3. Hey guys, I'm in the midst of writing a breakbeat electronica album (of various tempos and styles including DnB to more jazzy funk-ish) and I realized I don't really have a clue what kind of formalities to take care of outside of album artwork and mastering and making sure songs are consistent. Is it really as easy as posting the tracks on Bandcamp or is there more to it?
  4. I was under the impression this thing didn't start yet. Damn. Time to break out my famous last-minute Friday mixing skills.
  5. Or I check every version of FL Studio for legacy options when they make a change I dislike. After doing so, I don't use the legacy options, by then I grow accustomed to the new stuff. So try FL10, and see if your driver crash persists.
  6. Turn off keyboard by computer keyboard (so pressing keys on QWERTY won't trigger notes). In the piano roll. Press M. If you want to keep QWERTY MIDI on, click "Abc" at the top of the piano. Go to top left corner in piano roll window (arrow pointing down) for drop down menu. View > Rounded (uncheck it). OMG MORPHING HAX
  7. Is it a crack? If not, then upgrade to FL 10 and report back. It's free to upgrade, unlike other DAW's. If it's a crack, that might be your issue. If not, try switching drivers and see if the problem persists.
  8. His combfilter doesn't support Ableton, apparently. Not sure what FM8 has to do with it, though.
  9. I had to use it in a Music Production class. I hated it. The audio editing is nice but that's really all it's good for. xD
  10. Where: Sae Institute New York When: September 24, 2011 Why Should You Bother: Free Music Software http://www.imsta.org/index.php I really wanna go. Lots of big names like Native Instruments, Steinberg, Image-Line, etc. are gonna be there. Perhaps this is a good opportunity for an NYC OCR mini meet-up?
  11. Komplete is a delicious choice for that kind of music, and so is Omnisphere. The way I see it is, Omnisphere has MORE OF what you're looking for, while Komplete has what you're looking for and a bunch of stuff you might NOT be looking for.
  12. Not going to comment on arrangement. These all sound like VGM themes so I'll treat em like that. Plus there is more than one melody in these too, so it's fine. If you overhauled this entire album to real instruments with phatter beats and more sizzling and variant synthesizers, this would make one kickass modern game OST. Tempest Rush - Took me by surprise. It sounds a little lo-fi, but it's more reminiscent of the Megaman Zero (GBA) soundtrack then being just a bad quality song. The lead synth not having any filters and the harmony at parts really help with that, too. Sounds pretty retro, but not traditional chip retro. Has a very strong melodic drive to it, which also seals the deal to sound like it's from a GBA Soundtrack. Caveat Emptor - Now this one sounds like something from Paper Mario, 'specially with dat high shakuhachi sample (or what have you). Would work great for an underground level or a main character finding himself in a city of funny little engineer gnomes (yeah, I've been playing too much WoW) that the world didn't know existed. It's got a melody with a populated background, so bonus points for strong soundscape. Bitter End to a Thatched Ray of Light - This whole thing sounds like you made it with Wingroove or a MIDI sheet music writer. It's ridiculously similar to the kind of stuff that my brother used to write years ago in something called MusicTime Deluxe. Granted, I could be biased because I loved hearing that stuff, but lo-fi and older quality of the instruments doesn't bother me. That melody is pretty uplifting, sounds like a battle theme for an RPG. Five is Average - Nice Mega Man references here. It obviously has ties to the ol' NES soundtracks we all know and love, but it's got elements of the more modern generation with delay, reverb and those pitch bends. Again, nice work on those melodies. You have not yet failed to get full score in that category, though the production on this album isn't perfect, the writing makes up for it. Bright Dreams from Empty Vessels - This really sounds like the ending to some stupid dramatic SNES rpg. Nice work, the melody is great. The synth string sample really sells that RPG feel with the painfully same attack to it. I'm just gonna stop commenting on melodies, they're all great. Wealth of Knowledge - Ugh. So good. Again, sounds like an RPG track. Perhaps the home town theme? Asymmetrical Conflict - Ok, a little less perfect. It's a little overcompressed... but that's the only gripe. This one sounds like a stage theme to the Megaman Zero series. The electric guitar sample is amazing(ly lo-fi) with the way you use it. Lofty Goals From a Forest Epitath - Love that acoustic guitar in the background. It's a pretty good riff. Sounds like a more modern game music piece. Love that reverb, the flute instruments and the dance beat. Could be in a sci-fi/fantasy RPG, where they use swords and magic in a time of hovercars. (*cough*) This is possibly my favorite on the album, alongside Asymmetrical Conflict and Caveat Emptor. Colossus of Egypt - ANOTHER RPG-esque gem. It's a great cave theme of just a nice, more chill overworld theme. Perhaps it is the overworld theme, but only when you're finally traveling to confront the final boss. Need Insurance? Get a Bullet - MORE MEGAMAN ZERO(-esque)! YES! LOVE IT! That synth choir in the background is pretty cool. I like the breakdown at :55. Nice use of different scales for the solo. That's a must when I'm writing a solo. Red Dim Lights and Old Stories - Another RPG like song. This one reminds me of Cosmo Canyon from FFVII and could be used in a similar situation. Lunar Eclipse Millenium - I like the beat here. This song sounds like it could be used in an underground level or something. That percussive bell thing in the background reminds me of FFVII, the level where Aeris dies. ( :'[ ) Isolate the Variable - Your synths are better here than any track. The drums are pretty thin (and default FL Studio sounding) but I guess that's ok. I would've preferred a driving bass kick. Would've worked better. Could be in a side-scroller game, a factory level in a snowstorm perhaps. Vestigial Dance of Blades - Phat beats shine here more than anywhere else on the album. Pretty cool track, good synths too. This one sounds like a Megaman Zero stage theme, maybe a power plant level or something. Reminds me of the power plant level in Megaman Zero 3. (Reborn Mechanics is its name on the remastered OST) Exploring the Temporal Lobe with a Bo... - That plucked string instrument is kinda weird, but it works. Koto, it sounds like later on. I have no idea what this song could be used as. It sounds a little dark, with a bit of a "story time" feel to it. It Was Written on Your Tombstone - This is definitely the main villain's theme. Sounds pretty badass. FIRST THE SONG PLAYS, and then the villain shows up. Awesome. And then the battle ensues, but he GETS AWAY. Hahaha. Pretty dark. That instrumentation at :04 reminds me of old Metroid ost's. The Heavenly Integer - Pretty laid back. If you added some shuffle to the hi hats, it would help kick back a bit, To be honest, I don't know what this song could be used as in a game. Maybe a level where the main character goes to an Observatory that has the key to finding the final boss or something. The soundscape is pretty spacey. I like that. Starry Nights - Cheesy credits theme? Mhm. The beat is like pop music, with the chordal pianos and strings making it sound really cheesy and dramatic (in that annoyingly happy way).
  13. Sorry I haven't given my thoughts yet... I haven't forgotten... haha... >_>
  14. Sweet. I can't wait to start reading this stuff, especially Superman.
  15. Just answering your question, dude.
  16. No.itwontrunplayabledude Should you get it? Your choice, but don't expect to enjoy it if you're playing it like that. I got so fed up with TF2 when I was on an underpowered machine.
  17. I was joking with you, moreso because I just recently got a Prelude remix posted so it was almost a coinkidink.
  18. You don't even need to hire them, a lot of people will do it for free.
  19. Walk up to him right after he spychecks randomly. Works like a charm. That and catching him around corners. It works better because you don't have to be visibly behind him when he spychecks until it's too late (for him).
  20. Will the Appendo iGame display fade to black if you hold it a certain way?
