OCR03373 - *YES* Sonic Rush Adventure 'Jeweled Scepter'
WillRock replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I dig this. I think my brain is reluctant to accept sidechaining as a legit thing cause "ARGH ITS PUMPING MAKE IT STAAAAP" But yah, this is neat. You've basically taken the original and turned it into bright poppy EDM. Can't fault it. Super duper clean production, nice arrangement, gud stuff. Moar. Tell bLINd he's a gud teacher YES -
For Rock, look up Sixto Sounds and Prince Uf Darkness on here. Pretty much the go to guys for me with rock.

Sorry about the title

GUNNA JUMP ON THE BEFORE/AFTER OCR BANDWAGON Before OCR After OCR I'm not gunna lie. OCR made step up my game in a big way
-
Oh yeah, he was a massive influence on Nubou. To be fair, VERY influential, Emerson Lake and Palmer are probably THE most famous forgotten band ever - according to everyone who remembers them, in their peak, they were the biggest rock band in the world - more popular than Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd etc etc. Sadly, time hasn't been kind to the bands popularity, but everyone over a certain age remembers who they are, and most musicians worth some shit who knew about them were inspired by them, VGM included.
-
Keith Emerson was, for my money, the best keyboardist ever. His command of the instrument and harmonic interplay was ahead of its time. Tarkus in particular is something to just be in awe of. Plus, such an influence on so many famous musicians, including ones within the VGM community. A more monumental loss than I think most people will realise.

I think that for many, variation = lack of repetition. The general public are very used to hearing songs with more repetition than OCR offers overall I've found. Many songs follow a verse/chorus format and often, other than lyrical content in the verses, much of it is cut and paste, with exception of instrumental performances (same parts, just recorded again). Sure there are exceptions but generally, I find OCRs standards require a bit more effort to keep things interesting. Plus, because we're dealing with (mostly) instrumentals, track structures can tend to be a bit more open. Thats just my take on it.
-
Just to make my stance clear, I don't hate repetition generally. I hate it in my own music. I'm my own worst critic by a thousand million miles. Probably
-
Ok thats a clickbait and totally untrue headline but I am curious. When I joined OCR, I found that they required a specific style of arrangement. And I think that has generally influenced the way I write my music now. I hate repetition. In fact, I often have trouble making something that has the same tempo throughout, I either have to go halftime, or double time, or change the tempo completely, change my style halfway through the track... my music has gone MEGA progressive thanks to OCRs influence. I was talking to Sir_Nuts who claimed he hates repeating himself to the point of reducing his output for the fear of sounding samey. So OC Remixers! How has OCR changed your music?

OCR03301 - Sonic Adventure "Red Barrage Aquarium"
WillRock replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Arrangement is amaaaaaazing. Production is a bit muddy at points but the arrangement just farts all over it. Killer Studio Chops indeed. Moar. Edit: I just realised the guitarist is Bret Garsed. THAT. IS. AWESOME. If people don't know who he is, he's the guitarist in NELSON: -
hold on I recognise this cover art... Isn't this the game with the original theme for Richards Villa? Let me check... EDIT: YES check it out bros! You've probably figured it out if you're fans of the game, but I believe Richard and his castle were references to the character in this game. There are plenty of more well known references to characters in Links Awakening, including Mario, Luigi, Goombas, Kirby, Yoshi etc, but this was a much more obscure addition.

How do you get over fear of failure?
WillRock replied to Virtual Boy's topic in Music Composition & Production
Failure is not writing "bad music". Failure is not writing music at all. If you don't like something, just remember its music, music is subjective. and someone somewhere will adore it. Being a composer means writing things you won't necessarily enjoy or like... hell you might not see any merit in it at all. Having a career as a composer is about keeping someone else happy, not yourself. Sometimes that means writing something in your own style, but usually you gotta fit to your brief. Besides, sometimes a mediocre idea can turn into something incredible if you just keep at it. Never give up, never scrap an idea if you can help it. You never know what you'll end up with, or what may happen. -
I might change my patreon tactics so that instead of "Help me plz I love you its for a good cause", it'll instead read: "Give me money naow... OR I KEELL U!" That'll convince them *nods*

Well thats because he's Smooth McGroove. The only way to compete with that is to throw some shitty gimmick into our remixes. Like shitty 80s inspired synth solos or something.
