  1. It's painful finding a site that has a solid list of MOD chiptunes nowadays. The MOD archive holds a lot of good ones in the four basic formats: MOD, S3M, XM, and IT. Other spin-offs or variations probably aren't held on the site (such as MadTracker), but most people use these formats anyway. The Mod Archive I haven't been there in awhile myself, so I'm not sure how their content sizes up now. The 'Random Pick' option does help you discover songs you wouldn't find otherwise; it can also make you break a rib laughing at some of the more terrible songs. Also note that, to make tracked music, you'll need samples, and often, the simplest way to get samples is to open up other MODs in your tracker and rip the samples. Most samples were simply handed around back then (unless the author denied permission to do so), and the practice still seems to hold now to some degree. The tracker I've used, Modplug Tracker, uses a Windows interface, so it's much simpler to learn than the trackers that maintain an Amiga/C64 feel to them. Modplug Tracker
  2. I'm pretty sure the only way to create SIDs is to code it in BASIC, which is not gonna be a lot of fun. But yeah, SID music has this... strange richness to it, when well-made. A lot of MOD music tends to have similar sounds, or are even made to sound like C64 chiptunes (given that the format was for the Amiga, the C64's successor). The songs used for Seiklus come to mind.
  3. Soooo this is a massive necropost, but with good reason. Indie developer Nicalis has been working on a port for WiiWare, which includes a graphics and music upgrade (both optional), several new game modes (including Curly Story, where you play as Curly Brace), and various other additions. The development was assisted and monitored by Daisuke Amaya himself, so his official mark of approval is set on the game. It's going for 1200 Wii points ($12) right now, so check it out! I certainly plan on doing so. WiiWare game page
  4. If you really want to micromanage your chiptunes, try setting up an MML compiler. It's a pain in the butt to set up and use, but you can really get the best results out of your NSFs that way.
  5. I'm not sure how XIII stacks up in terms of world-building, but that's been one of the strongest pulls of Final Fantasy for me. In these games, they not only make a world, they build it. As you play and live the character's lives, you see the mechanics, politics, laws, and nature of the world. XII did that surprisingly well, which is one of the reasons I really like the game (among other reasons). Similarly with X, the storyline didn't just show you the world: you were slowly shown every aspect from someone who themselves was having to learn the rules to a new world, which is why it was so strong (despite its terribly simple battle system). Does XIII world-build, or does it show?
  6. Since the OCR servers are back up, anyone wanna help get it kick-started again with a few rounds? I'll be on Blu waiting for anyone to join.
  7. Getting into the MMO realm, you have a different set of issues altogether. Go play Maple Story for five minutes and you'll see what I mean.
  8. The biggest problem that I see with kids that age playing online is that they have a very low maturity level. The only way they see how to solve problems is to argue back. Common courtesy is the last thing on their minds, so they'll ignore requests to do or cease doing something. It is rare that you will find a 12-year-old giving a methodical, rational reason for chasing after people with a syringe gun instead of healing, or who will stop talking just because someone asks them to. Then again, there are some 20-year-olds that behave similarly. It's all comes down to maturity: most 20-year-olds can be expected to behave at a more mature level, whereas 12-year-olds are not.
  9. That's neat! Glad their work isn't dying out completely. I never got a chance to play it before, so I'm definitely gonna check it out now.
  10. Heh. I haven't heard a single good thing about Vanille yet. Except that her Eidolon is reminiscent of Magitek Armor.
  11. What would be worse: scroll-ball weapon switch. But seriously, people who play these games use real men's mice if I'm not mistaken.
  12. I think it'd be fun to try! It doesn't seem that intrusive, and it would make some people laugh, and those who don't get it... well, they probably won't care anyway!
  13. But medic healing is continuous, whereas damage is an instantaneous thing (unless you're on fire, of course, and even that is just periodic damage, akin to poisoning on RPGs). Either way, it's a minor quibble. The idea still works, eh?
  14. You can't technically receive simultaneous damage, given that damage is by definition discrete. But you can receive damage from 5 people over, say 2 seconds while cloaked.
  15. I think the OCR WIP server is acting wierd; I tried uploading a new version the other day, but when I played it back, it just pulled the old one from the cache. I'm not sure if that's what's causing the problem, so I'll link to the other mirror here, too: [WIP v6]
  16. Post the mix, silly! And it better be good, I like the source, heh.
  17. Wow! While the lead woodwinds can get a bit overpowering at times, the general arrangement was practically flawless. It's a great take on the source, and we definitely need more FFV love around here!
  18. Wait, you can just ask? o.o If I do, I'll probably ask someone who commented on the original submission, though.
  19. I really need to do something about that flute, huh? The sample is just too weak to hold itself up as a lead, but I can't anything else that has anywhere near as pure a quality. Also, I'll certainly ask around on the collabs for anyone willing to help. Thanks for the tip! EDIT: Sooo, not sure how much this helps, but I doubled up the flute lead at the beginning, so tell me if you think it sounds any stronger than before. I've also fattened up the beginning with some bass. In terms of the guitar, I want to keep it unless it's completely unstandable. I do want some pieces of the tracker style to remain intact, so that's my reasoning, anyway.
  20. Alright, thanks to some input from friends, I've been able to tweak, mix, and all-round smack the song back into shape. [WIP Final (hopefully!)] Fireslash OCRWIP Mirror: (outdated, won't upload new version; keeps bringing back the old one!) Comparison: [WIP v3 (previously submitted version)]
  21. It's really simple if you face backwards. Face away from the ledge you want to reach, begin moving backwards, then jump. Just as your jump is starting, you launch a rocket downwards at an angle. Sounds weird, but it's not all that hard once you've done it a couple times. Just remember: jump, then rocket.
  22. I couldn't help but post here... ...but not having known GrayLightning, I must say this makes almost everyone on this site look like a bunch of manic stalkers. Though I don't see how a group of over 100 people could manage to stalk someone without them noticing, hehe! Well if you do find him, drag him back here and duct-tape him to his computer. We need moar mixes from him!
  23. Forsooth! It seems my acoustic guitar sample was more grating than anticipated. Sooo, before I try to dig up some other samples to use, I'm asking around for anyone who has the time to play the line of the acoustic guitar. I also realized that leaving the guitar out on its own is a bad idea, so I've added a synth-bass to fill in some gaps. [Latest WIP] [Acoustic Guitar Line] I'll render a copy with the acoustic part singled out to make it simpler to record. Also, I'm really not sure if this will be well-tuned for guitar, so please let me know how easy it is to play if you decide to fiddle around, so I know whether to keep asking or to just sample-swap. Last, I don't know how to write tabs, but if you read little black dots, or at least note names, I can transcribe the line.
