The PCReMix Initiative ~ Let's put the PC in OC ReMix!
DusK replied to Archangel's topic in ReMix Requests
I really wanna do something from MechWarrior 2 or Ghost Bear's Legacy. I'll give those two OSTs another listen. -
Excellent recommendation right here. Schecter builds guitars on par with axes that cost 3x as much. They're built like tanks and have great tone. Slap some better pickups into an Omen 6 and you'll have yourself something you may never want to replace. I'm also gonna echo the same thing with Squier stuff. I got good tone out of my Squier bass, but it didn't hold up very well at all. My girlfriend's Squier Strat also saw very little play and I can see some signs of wear. They're just not that well-built.

FF6 Remix Project -- 2 Week Extension

"The Decisive Battle" is begging for a metal remix. May I supply said metal remix? -
mod-review Shinobi 3 - Whirlwind - "Oboro Drive"
DusK replied to DusK's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Oh I totally heard it. That section starting at 2:22 seems a bit over-the-top. I did some EQ work to give that lead guitar bit more breathing room, which allowed me to turn the volume down on that. Version 5. Also marks my move to SoundCloud for all my WIP uses for various reasons. Mainly the clock and the private links. I also brought in the kick's clarity a little bit and brought the bass up. I dunno if that's enough to really bring it out though, and I might end up layering another bass track over it with a different tone. I'm starting to think this might be ready for some Mod Review action soon, but I'll let it stew for, oh, a week or so like usual before I bump it up. -
Generation Gap: A Sonic the Hedgehog Tribute EP (New KNGI release)

Glad you liked it. -
Awesome customer service from Musician's Friend
DusK replied to Legion303's topic in General Discussion
Stuff like that is the reason I've used Musician's Friend for years. They didn't even hesitate in sending me a new powered mixer when the first one showed up broken. The new one arrived less than a day after I shipped the old one out. Simply put, they freakin' rock. -
3DS: Friend Codes on First Page, OMG THE THIRD DIMENSION
DusK replied to The Damned's topic in General Discussion
Yes you can. Your notes are awesome imo. Also, if anyone has added me and I haven't added them back, feel free to send me a PM or something. -
mod-review Shinobi 3 - Whirlwind - "Oboro Drive"
DusK replied to DusK's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Good crits. You're right. Now that you mention it, that backing synth is a bit loud. But I'm not hearing a whole lot of mud, which is always a problem for me because my speakers are crap and make EVERYTHING sound muddy, and I do all of my tracking/mixing/ect. on studio headphones. Version 4! I pulled down that backing synth a bit and carved a space in the rhythm guitars around 3k to make way for the leads. It seems to have cleared up a bit of that mud according to my speakers, but I can't really do a whole lot for that without making everything sound so thin that there's barely any remix left. -
This is pretty much exactly what I do, except I don't keep OCR stuff in my VGM folder. So it'd be My Music\OverClocked ReMix\Chrono Trigger.

OCR01592 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Malicious Fingers"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix. Oh man. This is the mix that unarguably is the most inspiring to me. This mix is the one that made me decide beyond a shadow of a doubt that I wanted to plunge head-first into VGM remixing. To this day, it remains my favorite remix. Nice, crisp guitars, a clear, complex synth, AMAZING lead work, everything about this track is just too awesome for words. -
OCR00982 - Sonic Adventure "The Twinkle Park Classic"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This was the very first DarkeSword track I heard, and I think it might have been among the first 5 OC ReMix's I had ever heard. I actually remember the exact moment; I was abusing my high school's T1 connection back in 2003, as I didn't have broadband at the time, trying to download as much stuff as I could. I noticed this track when I was looking through a list of Sonic mixes and my eyes lit up, because I have loved the source ever since hearing it in 3D Blast. This track still holds up to the test of time imo. It's got a well-rounded sound to it. Very upbeat; I'm glad that aspect of the source was kept intact, though I can't really imagine a take on Twinkle Park without that. I still dance a bit every time it comes up when I shuffle my OCR folder. Excellent stuff. -
OCR00206 - Final Fantasy VI "Terra in Black"
DusK replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I agree with djp. This is what the original should have sounded like. The synth choice in the beginning really set the same mood as the game's opening. It sounds like a "snowy" synth. The guitars are nice and clear, and well-performed. This mix just rocks in every way. -
OCR01130 - Final Fantasy VI "Squaresoft Variation"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was so angry at myself when I found this mix. I had been lurking the site for years. I knew who Jeremy Soule was; Guild Wars happens to be one of my favorite soundtracks. So the fact that I had completely missed this was extremely upsetting. I got over it quickly. A fantastic orchestral arrangement that sounds like I could easily slap it into Skyrim's music folder and listen to it on my adventures. So atmospheric. -
OCR01389 - Ecco: The Tides of Time (GG) "Fury of Medusa"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
When I heard Sadorf subbed this, I squealed like a little fangirl. Medusa Mix was always one of my favorite mixes, but this... this is wonderful. It's hard to describe everything about this track that makes me enjoy it so much. The way you can tell Sadorf got so much better since Medusa Mix yet still touched back on that style really gives this mix a class that a lot of other mixes just can't match imo. It's like a sequel; An extremely well-done sequel to an already great story. -
OCR01745 - Double Dragon "The Secrets of Sosetsuken"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I used this song as boss fight music for a D&D game. No joke. This track really gets me bangin'. The guitars have a lot of character to them. Very shreddy. The piano pieces seem a bit overwhelming at times, but not enough to make me want to turn this badass track off. I'm really glad Sixto went with the original solo. Such a massive nostalgia kick at that moment. -
This sounds like something that could really fit that setting that you find the source in. It's got a very magical feel to it through the entire track thanks to a very smart choice of synths and a (imo) well-done piano, all of which lending itself to an emotionally-stirring melody.

OCR00621 - Chrono Trigger "Times of Distortion"
DusK replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Dat bass. Another great mix from years back when I first started checking this site out. 2:44 always gets to me for some reason. It's got this great epic feel to it. Underproduced, but if he came back and touched it up to meet today's standards, my jaw would probably hit the ground. -
I miss JAXX. He was one of my favorite remixers. I liked this track in particular. Listening to it now, it's easy to see how high the bar has risen for production quality in order to pass a mix. It's got that old-school mark going for it, but I think that helps it stand out in the genre it shoots for. Nice, fast, gritty punk rock. I really like lead harmony on this track in particular.

OCR01453 - Chrono Trigger "Black Wind Rising"
DusK replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I love the feel of this entire mix. It really feels like so much wrapped into one piece. I actually considered using this piece for a Halo montage a few years back when I was still playing HPC competitively. I can't really say that for any remix on the site; This piece really has a cinematic feel that grips you and doesn't let up. -
OCR00410 - Chrono Trigger "Ocean Palace (Wave Breaker)"
DusK replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This piece was a very welcome addition to my Creative Jukebox Zen player's paltry ReMix playlist back in high school. I just love how aggressive it is. The melody can really only be described as haunting. A lot of clever synth programming here, too. -
One of the first remixes I listened to. Love the sound of this, though a bit conservative throughout the entire track. This piece really sounds like it could have been played in place of the source track; It seems to really fit that same feel. I think the heavy chiptune-ish synths help out with that a lot.

mod-review Shinobi 3 - Whirlwind - "Oboro Drive"
DusK replied to DusK's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Version 3. Additional processing on the lead guitars to make them sound not so dry, slight wide boost to the rhythm guitar mids to give 'em more character, some more drum humanization, and messed with the velocities on the synth lead starting around 2:22. As always, crits/suggestions welcome.
