OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Yeah, fugly. Page probably shouldn't even exist, given the albums database has much the same info. I'll work on this. Funny you should mention this, as I saw your post AFTER I just ran a large composer association update that covered this and a LOT of other stuff, including soundtemp for ragnarok online, etc. -

Donkey Kong Country 2 Chiptune link
djpretzel replied to Jammerlink's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Yeah, that's a term to specifically describe albums, so as to differentiate between OSVs and commercial arranged albums, but that's not as helpful to distinguish between MP3s and chiptune/SPC/mods, and I've never seen it applied as such. It's a *little* Engrish, too, but the main problem is that it doesn't convey what we're talking about... if I saw "OSV" or "Original Sound Version" on OCR as a tab or category, I'd expect MP3s or information about commercial albums, not NSF or SPC files... -
Donkey Kong Country 2 Chiptune link
djpretzel replied to Jammerlink's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Link updated. Finally. But what would you CALL an SPC? Just an SPC? Technically they ARE tunes, and they did come FROM chips, the core distinction being synthesized vs. sampled. We had this discussion awhile back and concluded that it was easier to just call everything a chiptune, but I'm open to alternative names that make sense: VGM Archive Chiptune/VGM VGM Rip (could be confused w/ CDDA rips...) VGM Sound Data Original VGM I want something that's relatively straightforward and conveys that it's the original soundtrack and that it's NOT an MP3 but rather a chiptune/spc/etc... -

I could reinstate it, but here's the thing... I'm in the process of sort of re-envisioning how the tabs work in general. The problem is that in some places (homepage) they're being employed as site-wide navigation across huge areas (forums, wiki, etc.) and then on detail pages they're being used for scoped views specific to that data. From a navigational perspective, I want something cleaner, where there's no "role-changing"... I don't know, I'm rambling... hopefully that made sense. If I can't figure out what I want in a week or two, I'll reinstate that tab until I can.

In the spirit of making April kick as much ass as possible, we've gone live with a modified ReMix detail page that incorporates comments RIGHT on the page itself, in a blog/youtube style. You can still get to the full review thread, and in fact need to in order to reply, but if you're just browsing the latest 15 comments, you don't need to leave the main mix page. We plan to do the same thing for albums. Example: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01830/ I'm still working on the code that parses/cleans up BBcode, so you'll see some formatting inconsistencies with URL, quote, and other elements, but in general the comments should be intelligible. I personally prefer things this way as I feel it highlights the awesome feedback OA, DragonAvenger, Marmiduke, Polo, Dhsu, and many others provide for so many mixes. Hopefully it will encourage others to do the same. So, what do YOU think? Post your thoughts on this change here - do keep in mind that, as stated, I'm still working on the text formatting, so pointing that out isn't necessary.

Well, for one, sorry if your feathers were ruffled... Larry seemed to indicate there was another side to the story, but it definitely would have been nice to post the mix along with the interview, that was definitely my intention. But we'll still pimp out the interview when we post the mix, and go back and integrate the mix into the interview as well, so all is not lost. In general, I'm finding more and more that when we try to delay posting mixes, interviews, or other things so that everything's synchronized, we end up holding on to stuff too long and everything gets backed up. I like the *idea* of posting related content at the same time, but pragmatically, it seems to have a negative effect on the queue & the overall site schedule. This isn't directed at you, I'm just explaining some of the rationale behind our moving forward and posting the interview with Chris.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
No objections in the abstract, but it'd be a pain to code... right now it's just a simple javascript that randomizes the number, renders the link & image, and that's it. To pull back the character name, it'd need to be Ajax'd or hooked up to a database or both, and that's a major change that - based on other priorities - probably isn't gonna happen in this decade... Also might be performance problems associated, so imo we basically need to table this idea. I'm not sure about # of mixes, but at the VERY least I want to filter on role, so I can see mixers only, composers only, etc. Some form of filtering, sorting, or both is definitely on my todo list. Believe I've fixed this, might still be cached wrong in some places. We just changed the URL structure for organizations, and these types of changes tend to break links. In general the site is in a state of change, but I definitely appreciate the QA. Assume you're referring to the banner ad? If not, I need a screenshot, as the rest of the page looks normal in IE, but the banner ad is indeed jacked up. Need to get a different one or something, but the overall album page layout sucks in general, and needs to be heavily revised. -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Not anymore Yeah I basically killed the alt template... I'm thinking we'll keep the review threads w/ sigs intact since we're working on a different way of highlighting comments on mix pages themselves... Damn, kicking my ass, aren't you? I plan to visually overhaul the torrents but at the moment the db is corrupt again and obtaining a means of repairing it is key... I messed around with this... tried variable heights, for instance... problem is that when they're floated left and listed multi-column, variable heights break the columns up in very ugly ways. There may be other options... Great catch, there. It was because of how the lockdown thread was named, since the link up used to key off thread title (and still may)... I've renamed the thread to prevent future issues and removed the thread id from the mix entry. -

Glad to hear it... this script actually cost $30, but it's pretty flexible and we intend to use it more to spotlight multiple features/articles/interviews, etc. -

Does look interesting, although clearly they're borrowing from 2001 and not shy about it... Rockwell was good in Heist and stole the show in Galaxy Quest, should be worth watching.

OCR01824 - Castlevania "Transylvanian Temptation"
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh I'd REALLY rather not... Brendan, god bless him, he's a great guy, but frankly the Internet is rife with folks who'll go off on Ogg vs. MP3 and bitrate rants at the drop of a hat; it's really nothing special. Dime a dozen. Yes, MP3 compression (and all other lossy forms) can and will introduce artifacting, but there are plenty of mixes on this site at similar lengths that sound fantastic and don't get the same types of comments. Don't get me wrong - if it wasn't clear from the writeup, I think you put together an awesome track. But you seem to be suggesting that people can't "seriously" talk about sound quality, mixing, or mastering on a 128Kbps encoding, and they can, because there are PLENTY of details that come through - or don't, depending on the mixing/mastering/EQ of the source - at that quality, regardless of any artifacting or frequency limiting. In other words, I firmly believe most of the comments surrounding sound quality would still be made even if it were 320Kbps, as they are targeted at things you can't write off as MP3 compression. For my money, this is the type of music that SHOULDN'T be pristinely mixed/mastered/EQ'd, as it's edgy, but to write off comments due to bitrate... bleh. I honestly was reluctant to even reply since it'll just bring folks who believe they've got superhuman hearing and can detect the difference between 320 and 321Kbps out of the woodwork... like moth to flame... -
Miniscule portable midi controller beta
djpretzel replied to Zephyr's topic in Music Composition & Production
Youtube video of display test SEEMED to suggest that the entire display was taken over by a large envelope editor whence tweaking settings, hopefully contextually, with an auto-switch back to whatever the "main" display is after said knob/setting stopped changing. Basically, abandoning a lot of the multi-level heirarchical stuff for some quick-and-dirty, instant feedback type display action... maybe that was just my misinterpretation from the video, but it seems like there's room to explore that sort of approach. -
Miniscule portable midi controller beta

Genuinely cool... looks to be applying some Web 2.0 style usability principles to the interface/display, as well. "Teenage Engineering" though... does this mean it will dress up in black on certain days, wearing a wallet chain, giving me an attitude? I do not know. Hopefully it'll be priced reasonably - I'm interested. -

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
We just switched from the previous system for artist images, which only allowed medium res, awkwardly aspect-ratio forced images, to a lightbox... examples: http://www.ocremix.org/artist/138/tommy-tallarico http://www.ocremix.org/artist/3/nobuo-uematsu http://www.ocremix.org/artist/4279/djpretzel Some of the captioning gets cut off on smaller images, which needs to be fixed. We might do multiple games images, system images, etc., so I think we'll get a lot of mileage out of this switch, and that it's preferable to alternatives. -
