  1. $30 shipped for Mass Effect? That's the price at GameStop, but I'd rather give you the money than them...
  2. It's Garritan's Gofriller Cello. It's very responsive to note endings and will slur/glide from one note to the next if they overlap but do staccato if you play short and detached, which makes for a very natural performance experience. Everything in this mix was played live, and the cadenza (which is pretty bread and butter, sure, but has the specific timing I wanted) was actually improvised. I did end up editing some note lengths after the fact, but no more than a dozen, so the cello part here is basically me playing live. As a side note, an additional influence for me on this was the soundtrack to There Will Be Blood, which had some unusual string sounds in it... that's where I specifically got the inspiration to use Bartok pizzicato. Also, this easily has the most tempo variation of any of my mixes, by a ratio of 1000 to 1... it starts off at I think 146bpm and ends up over 170bpm, if I recall correctly. It's also not straight tempo changes; there are a couple of those, but also a couple accelerando/tempo curves. From a variable tempo perspective, I doubt I'll ever do anything as dynamic
  3. OverClocked ReMix Releases Free Fan Tribute Album, Doom II: Delta-Q-Delta August 8, 2008 Contact: David W. Lloyd, dlloyd@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA--Today, OverClocked ReMix released its eleventh album, Doom II: Delta-Q-Delta. The album, made by fans for fans, honors the 1994 id Software PC game Doom II with 13 arrangements of composer Bobby Prince's original score. Available for free download at http://doom2.ocremix.org, Delta-Q-Delta is not affiliated with or endorsed by id Software. More than 10 artists from the OverClocked ReMix community contributed nearly an hour of music to the album, with interpretations covering a variety of genres and styles from industrial to electronica to rock to orchestral. The spiritual successor to Doom: The Dark Side of Phobos, OverClocked ReMix's 2005 album, Delta-Q-Delta also strove to creatively interpret the Doom series' traditional bleakness. "I hope you, the fans, the artists, the public in general will enjoy this album. Set yourself aside an hour. Turn the lights off, turn the volume up, and lose yourself in the dark and evil atmosphere that we've set up to hopefully provide you some nostalgia of that wonderful sequel title, Doom 2: Hell on Earth," said album creator and director Lee "The Orichalcon" Barber. OverClocked ReMix founder and president David "djpretzel" Lloyd, who contributed to Delta-Q-Delta, praised the efforts and creative direction of the album: "Lee's done a great job sticking with this project and seeing it through to conclusion. All of the artists who've contributed tracks have come up with some very dark, aggressive takes on the source material, and Doom fans should be very, very happy." About OverClocked ReMix Founded in 1999, OverClocked ReMix is an organization dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, and interpretation of video game music. Its primary focus is www.ocremix.org, a website featuring hundreds of free fan arrangements, information on game music and composers, resources for aspiring artists, and a thriving community of video game music fans. ### Digg it: http://digg.com/music/Doom_II_Delta_Q_Delta Download it: http://doom2.ocremix.org Torrent: http://bt.ocremix.org/files/Doom_II_Delta-Q-Delta.torrent
  4. That data is included... rather, if there are lyrics on file for a mix, I can query against that being null or not. There *could* be an additional boolean field to indicate a mix had vocals (with words), and then a query could be run to see which mixes had vocals with words, but did not have lyrics, but honestly, it's never been a huge problem.
  5. I need to check this out, sounds cool... and I'll expedite my work on the XML output to facilitate things!
  6. I'd love to see a Homeworld mix so I'll chime in: It's subbable in terms of quality, meaning it would make it to the panel, but at 9 minutes long, I'm thinking our 6MB limit might reduce the quality quite a bit. I also feel like the intro dwells a bit (3 min. before the beats), so that's where I'd be looking to cut some time. Last but not least, the orchestral and ambient elements are pretty strong, but the beats aren't up to the same level... I'd see about reading some of zircon's tutorials on the topic or talking to him directly on #ocrwip or #ocremix. I think a postable mix can come out of this with enough work on revising the length and improving the beatwork, but even with both, I can't of course make any guarantees, just FYI.
  7. I'm interested in going as well.... Xerol actually wanted me to organize, but because I can't commit 100% I thought that'd be a bad idea. If we get some critical mass going, however, this could really rock!
  8. I like the idea of individual techniques/topics being highlighted in videos, BUT... I'd also like to see a series of videos on the mix creation process, charting the development of a ReMix through to completion, then having that mix posted on the site. Something that explored different arrangement approaches, starting with a MIDI, going by ear, etc., showed how a couple different genre approaches to the same theme, then picked one and carried it through to the end. That's something that, while obviously more involved, will tell more of a story, and put everything in context.
  9. http://www.ocremix.org/remixing/skill/vocals-male/ Just a friendly reminder that this exists
  10. While I appreciate the effort & enthusiasm involved here, automated tools that gather all this data from the site by hitting page after page after page are actually BAD for the site - they cause a performance hit that's really unnecessary. The most efficient way of doing this is by pulling the data directly from the database, then gzipping the result and offering that for download. I'll look into something like that, and we'll be doing statistics and reports of our own pretty soon, but in the meantime please don't spider the site yourself for this information using scripts, etc. If I see too much of that, I'd have to put anti-leech measures in place to prevent it, which could adversely affect human users, which I don't want to do. Again, I appreciate the effort & enthusiasm, but the repercussions aren't worth it; I'll try to expedite coming up with our own, official solution.
  11. Thanks, everybody. We just got back and we're pretty much dead tired, but reading through these posts has been great. Mr. The Bronx Rican is definitely in some trouble from Photoshopping Anna, next time they meet

  13. Definitely not a visual thing for me.... more tactile. Yes, I know sound is just vibrations to begin with, so everyone can feel it to some extent, but I'm talking about equating certain timbres/textures with actual physical textures, feeling hot or cold depending on the type of music being played, etc. Perhaps that's pretty common, but if I sit and really focus on a piece, it manifests itself in my brain more as physical movement and sensation, too, as opposed to anything visual.
  14. If fake cello's okay: Final Fantasy VII 'Short Skirts' Tekken 2 'Incantation' The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Pachelbel's Ganon' ... and my next mix, to a very significant extent.
