This one's easy: graphics are VERY important. However, they're not the only element that makes a game great. Also, the importance of high-quality graphics varies depending on the genre of the game. Those criticizing the Wii for not supporting anything above 480P (and being graphically underpowered in general) tend to downplay the importance of control surface. Control surface, again, is important, and again its importance varies depending on the genre of the game. Those criticizing the 360 and PS3 for focusing on graphics too much tend to downplay graphics and place all the focus on controls. Neither controls NOR graphics equate to solid gameplay. People tend to forget that, just as pointless games can be made to show off impressive graphics, the Wiimote functionality CAN be artificially added to games as a gimmick. Either technology can be abused; I think the number of games that really call for alternative control surfaces like the Wiimote aren't as common as Nintendo would have us believe. I applaud their bravery in putting out a product that clearly and inarguably innovates, but with HDTVs becoming so much more prevalent, and graphics remaining (rightfully, in my opinion) one of the large draws for gaming, I think the approach will end up being a mistake in the long run. I'm still buying one.

Links SHOULD be orange. SOME of them are. For some reason I have yet to ascertain, the class being applied doesn't seem to "stick" throughout the entire thread, and is only applied, in some instances, to the very first link. As soon as I can figure out how to fix this, all links will be orange and underlined. If someone wily wit da CSS can take a look-see and figure it out before I get the time, message me your solution.

Forums that have no intrinsic link to OCR and are off-topic shouldn't be archived by search engines or be exposed directly as part of the public face of the site; they are offered as places for OCR visitors to discuss non-OCR stuff, not as part of the core mission of the site.

As part of our recent migration to vBulletin, we will be incrementally restructuring our forums. In an effort to better utilize our new forum software's capabilities, we have made the following changes: The site's main discussion forum has been renamed from "General Discussion" to "Community". The Announcements and Help & Newbies forums are now sub-forums of Community. A new Community sub-forum has been created named "Competitions" for various contests and competitions related to remixing, art, writing, etc. [*]A new forum has been created for off-topic discussion titled "Off-Topic". It is not designed to replace the UnModerated forum outright, but to offer a place where discussion unrelated to the main focuses of OCR can occur. This channel will be moderated under the same rules as all other forums. Politics, Philosophy, and Religion has been moved under the new Off-Topic forum. [*]FruityLoops, Reason and Guides & Tutorials sub-forums have been created under the main ReMixing forum, to facilitate discussion specific to those two software packages and to emphasize certain threads that have an educational focus and long-lasting relevancy. [*]An additional user profile field has been added specifically for ReMixers that lets users specify which, if any, of the main sequencing applications they utilize for their work. [*]The biography user profile field has been modified to allow 2000 characters, and displays as a multi-line textbox. [*]Various aesthetic changes in support of these modifications have also been made. Our previous forums will continue to be available in read-only mode at http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/ until Friday, January 19th, when they will be taken off-line permanently. Further forum restructuring will continue throughout early 2007.

This topic deserves a response from yours truly, and I apologize for not making one sooner. I'm a bit sick, and when I'm working in DC I have limited access to the net. Of everyone in the room that wished UnMod gone, I was probably the most reticent about its deletion, however ironic that may be. I knew that 95% of its usage was indeed disposable, and that it did have a good number of people who didn't even listen to and or care about video game music or OCR in general, but used it as a dumping ground for... whatever. The 5% is what gave me pause. It's what made me check with Larry to see what he thought, and it's why deleting the forum in the fashion that we did honestly did seem like bad form to me. Did I succumb to peer pressure? In a sense... however, the mods and site staff are more than peers, they're people who spend more time on the site than I do, who contribute above and beyond to it, and when all of them recommend something and none of them object, it's less about peer pressure and more about trusting people you respect. I knew there were legitimate users of the forum. I knew there were probably proponents, as Dhsu and The Coop have proven, that could articulate its merits, and who would oppose deletion without any warning whatsoever. This probably didn't bother anyone else in the room, but it did bother me. The counterargument against warning was that it would cause a massive backlash and that the other forums would suffer the consequences. That ended up happening to an extent, regardless, as poor Shariq was forced to mass-moderate an influx of inappropriate materials following UnMod's deletion. In a way, this validated the argument that advance warning wasn't such a great notion, but I still apologize to the few & proud legitimate visitors to the forum who wouldn't have reacted inappropriately and who deserved advance warning. UnMod was originally formed so that those who wanted to bitch and moan about how much of a saucy asshole I was could do so, provided they didn't flood, spam, or troll. Somehow, that notion devolved into a place where people with almost no interest in OCR posted random shit. While a good deal of that random shit occasionally amused me, and there was some real keeper hentai posted, ultimately the more appropriate form of the forum is for discussion of topics not directly related to games, anime, or music, which are the three topics General Discussion focuses on. As a side note, yes, it's a little goofy to think that anything can be "off-topic" to "general" discussion; we might find a way to semantically clarify this discrepancy further. We're waiting to create the "Off-topic" forum specifically because we don't want the appearance of simply renaming UnMod. We want to start from a clean slate, encourage threads like "and it made me smile" and similarly popular but also substantive conversation, and discourage using OCR as the forum equivalent of Sanford & Son's backyard. Is that a feasible goal? Are ANY of the 5% of UnMod's cooler folks that actually do give a damn about OCR going to stick around after their home has been abruptly ripped out from underneath them? I don't know. I hope so. I do know that it wasn't my goal to make OCR "classier" by deleting the forum, but rather to alleviate stress on the part of the moderators, to eliminate what had largely become a dumping ground for people not remotely interested in OC ReMix, and to create a new forum that would allow for the best of what UnMod had to offer but with moderation in place to prevent anarchy.

I suppose the modern equivalent holy grail would be CPS3 emulation, or 100% perfect Saturn emulation. The latter is something I'd really like to see; if playing Panzer Dragoon Saga with bilinear filtered textures and anti-aliasing is ever gonna happen, it's gonna be via emulation.

This has been addressed; mixes have been synchronized with vBulletin thread ids, and the link changed to reflect the new forum location.

It's not genius, but there are some nice details that I feel adjectives like "average" and "mediocre" don't accurately describe, like the stuttering, distorted FM synth around 1'11" that Larry cited; the production doesn't jump out and grab you, but it's also far from being what I'd call weak. I think most are correct in saying that this lies somewhere around the bar which we've set for submissions, but I'd tend to say there's enough attention to detail, general technical competence, arrangement, and energy to put it slightly above the bar, rather than below it. I was tapping my toe, and I didn't balk at any one particular transition for being unacceptably hackneyed, even if it was something I've heard before dozens of times. Don't assume it's being passed over; in this instance, I just don't have a good answer for you yet. vB's permissions are very different from phpBB's, and we're erring on the side of being too restrictive initially, which is almost always a better approach than locking things down after the fact. Clearly, there's a real need for users to be able to edit their own thread titles - no argument there. For minimum post length and max images, I'm going to consult the mods and vB best practices. For user editing of thread titles, I don't need to - this is something we had before that was pretty crucial, and as soon as I can figure out how to reimplement without granting any other permissions at the same time, I will.

Fixed; MediaWiki uses a separate (imo embarassingly craptastic) templating system, so when sidebar changes occur, it's usually the last to get them. Thanks for the reminder.

Migrate OCR's forums to vbulletin ... oh wait.

I looked for this option; I can control the total number of pages displayed - I set it to 8 and then lowered it to 5 - but the last page still just says last page, it doesn't list the last three pages, which I agree would be useful. I'm still learning the software, but if there's such an option, it wasn't located where it logically belonged, next to the max pages option I'm referring to. Any additional info you can provide would be appreciated.

We have successfully (we believe) migrated our forums from phpbb to vbulletin. This is a significant change that affects all forum users. Problems and questions regarding the new forums can be posted on a dedicated discussion thread created for this purpose at http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5644.

As you may have noticed, we have (finally) implemented a new forum system here at OC ReMix, vbulletin. While phpbb, our old forum software, served us well for awhile, the lack of continuous feature additions and myriad security flaws ultimately became too problematic. In order to move OCR forward, we needed software with more features and more extensibility, and after reviewing several options, I determined that vbulletin was the best option. We have performed a migration of all existing data from phpbb into vbulletin; avatars were lost, but you should still have your private messages and any posts that you've made as well. We know there will be issues, especially in the next couple days, but we wanted to ring in 2007 with what we believe will be one of the most significant improvements to the site in quite awhile. We're not quite sure that security has been entirely worked out, and some features that are enabled might need to be disabled, and vice versa, depending on how useful everyone finds them and how they affect server performance. Please use this thread for discussing the following: Problems you are having using the new forums (include as much detail as possible) Questions you have about the new forums. Please do not use this thread to discuss: Your personal opinion about the new forums. Anything not directly related to problems or questions with the new forums. Here are some of the more substantive changes the new forums bring with them: Mods can now ban and unban users. Please respect the forum rules. Improved WYSIWYG editor for posting. Hopefully, things will go relatively smoothly, paving the way for improvements and new features in 2007. The current title of "UnModerated" is a bit inaccurate, as moderation can still occur for a number of reasons (spamming, flooding, trolling, illegal stuff, etc.), and with vbulletin certain mod's powers will be expanded to include banning; the plan is to rename the forum to "Off-Topic".
