  1. Absolutely, and it sounds like this won't be an issue, but the real point I suppose is that the ocremix sub-domain URL should be the publicized, official URL. Whether the underlying URL is something seemingly official or something off on university webspace doesn't really matter. It's not really a redirection, if you look at the existing site projects - with the exception of KiC, which actually has DNS routing straight to their IP (might be possible for Chrono, too, depending on hosting), everything else is a URL mask, which puts an invisible frameset around the target URL. Anyways, didn't wanna ruffle anyone's feathers or cause panic, just clarify what's essentially become a policy on these site projects.
  2. One of the two things that has been consistent with all official site projects to date has been the usage of an ocremix.org sub-domain for the official project URL, the other being an official torrent tracked via bt.ocremix.org. It appears a separate domain has been purchased for this project and is already in use. This is something of an issue, if it's to truly be an ocremix site project, as while the qualifications are minimal, seeing as there's only two of them (with some associated ID3 tagging requirements), to break one is to break half. I will work on formalizing these requirements and making a sticky in this forum, but in the meantime, I'd like to talk with the powers that be - publicly, on this thread, or elsewhere - about the domain issue. We haven't made an exception yet and I don't really intend to. Perhaps it's not an issue, but I thought I'd raise it in case it is, beforehand.
  3. Alright, I've listened to this like a dozen times now, just to be sure. I hear where both of sides are coming from, and seeing as how a majority felt I should still step in on 6/5 votes and "tiebreak" (even when it's technically not a tie), I'm going to do so in this case. One thing to clear up first - I hear a lot of judges saying "I don't care if you have great samples" or "Arrangement can compensate for the worst samples in the world" or whatever; I appreciate the sentiment & intention, which is to get people focusing on arrangement, but by the same token, production *is* a factor. There's great free stuff out there, and we're not being snobs or elitists to expect that it be utilized. We're an MP3 site and not a MIDI site for a reason. Granted, I know some of you feel strongly that excellent samples shouldn't compensate for lackluster arrangement, and this is DEFINITELY the case... just don't go overboard in the other direction, either: excellent arrangement can't always compensate for lackluster production. Please keep this in mind. That being said, I don't think that's really the core issue, here. Production really isn't bad - in fact, some of the ambient effects are rather slick, and the mixing on the whole is clean. What I take issue with more is sound SELECTION, not sound quality; specifically, the oompah synth bass just becomes overly grating after awhile. Also, pitching snares as is done here is initially neat, and very tightly done, but it too becomes both expected and bit grating. What I think this mix has going for it is some very slick programming and a willingness, similar to Shnabubula's in nature, to try some unorthodox & elaborate compositional ideas out. However, there's some repetition of the "chorus"/main melodic motif that drags a bit the second and third time it's done, with minor alterations. When you come up with something this challenging for a listener's palate to appreciate and track (due to rather ornate programming), I think the last thing you wanna do is throw the same passage back at them with only minor changes. It's close. I could argue either side convincingly, I feel. Ultimately, for me, some of the repetition, the overuse of pitching percussion that usually isn't pitched, and the unfortunate bass chosen combine to form an Achilles' heel that's problematic enough for me to agree with the hesitancy on the parts of the 5 no votes. Seeing as the remixer has resubbed once, albeit without an amazing amount of overhaul, and has indicated he wants to move on and not revise further, this is unfortunate, because there's clearly some good ideas here. However, that's background context and shouldn't really affect my decision, which is No.

Name of game(s) ReMixed: Metroid Name of individual song(s) ReMixed: Kraid's Chamber Name of Remix: Kraid Krunch Comments: Metroid has always been my favorite NES game (I still have it and my NES...). The music is brilliant. The original Kraid's Chamber is still a fantastic piece, but I'm always interested in twisting things around a bit. While the original was haunting and melodic, my remix is upbeat but and groovy - but still has some nice throw-backs to the original. Hope you like my effort. PS: Cool website, by the way!
  5. Best terra mix yet - djp Hello. This is the first remix I've ever submitted to OCR, so I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't get posted. However, I certainly wouldn't mind if you find it acceptable. Now, I suppose I should come out right away and say that it's yet another Terra mix, a favorite for no-mix n00bs such as myself. Hopefully, this one is unique enough to pass. The remix originated in an informal compo in June as the piece "NEWS." It was the clear favorite, and soon became somewhat of a fan favorite among the #ocremix crowd. Several people, such as sadorf and TO, begged me to submit it to OCR, but at the time I refused. Despite its ten second length, I felt that it was too original and perhaps relied too deeply on two vocal clips from the movie "Bruce Almighty" to pass OCR standards. In case it becomes important for evaluation, the original can be found at http://66.221.70.133/CHz/CHz%20-%20NEWS.mp3. sadorf got impatient listening to my excuses and decided to get the song into a more submittable form. He only made a few atmospheric tweaks here and there, but they made a big difference on the track overall. I insisted that he be credited as well for the work he did, but he flat out refused, going so far as saying he'd submit the song in my name if I didn't. A very modest gentleman that man is, as I'm sure you're all aware. Also, if I may, I'd like to request that, should this remix reach the panel but not pass, the link to it be retained. I know there are a lot of Terra lovers out there, and I thought that they might enjoy listening to another mix, even if it doesn't turn out to be OCR caliber. In either case, thanks for listening to my track. 6. email sub file Zelda_Twilight_Princess_A_Day_In_Toaru_Village_OC_ReMix.mp3 Hi gang, Love the site and the music is absolutely awsome. I am a big fan of the Legend of Zelda series and I was wondering if I could submit one song. I have listened to all of the Legend of Zelda video clips and soundbites from this year's Eletronic Entertainment Expo in LA this year and I caught bits and pieces of a song from Twilight Princess. I remixed it just going by ear. I am no expert by any means at music production just a fan. I am only intrested in addint the first one called A Day In Toaru Village (Midna's Tears). You can listen to it by going to . It is in flash format so just click on the button to listen. I do have the song in .mp3 format. Like I said I am no expert but people who like the Zelda series thinks that it is ok. Not bad for a blind guy. Anyways have a listen and if not then at least give me a holler back with your decision. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Dre

  8. Nice. - djp Hey Dave, Long time no submit Anyway, I've got a remix here for ya that's a shoe-in to be my huge comeback after having not had anything posted for so long. Check it: It's a remix from Sonic & Knuckles of Flying Battery Zone. Felt like pulling out my breakbeat skills once more after that DDR remix awhile back. This one completely sapped my computer for everything it had. -- -Dain

  10. Song Title: Under A Bridge Game: Star Fox Remixed Song: Titania Boss, Titania Remixer: Sentiental Website: www.duke.edu/~ahb5 Song link: Hey guys. Thanks for reviewing the first song. I really admire the level of your experience in judging vg mixes. I understand that the vast majority, if not all of you, have received formal training in music theory, and while my band days are long over, I understand this truly important quality in music judging. If anything, I'm trying to learn how to make my songs more melodically complex, and your help is very very useful. So, this is only my second song submission, so I have time to learn. Plus, I purchased Logic Express for my birthday and am using it well. This song was started on Garageband 1.0, but has evolved into a Logic song using some of its cooler features. I have yet to show that I can do 'normal' music based on the material I've put on this site. However, I do plan on doing a jazzy song later. Basically, I have a couple points about this song. One thing, as I said before, is that I'm trying to make my songs more melodically complex without being nasty. However, it might come off in this song that I'm covering up the musical simplicity with effects and the like. Well, I'd like to think I did that on purpose, not to cover my tracks (double meaning there) but because the message in the song is kinda crazy. The whole inspiration behind this rearrangement is that the boss on Titania - Dr. Hangar - is a madman more evil (dare I say, Kefka-like?) than Andross. At times only two instruments are playing, which is done to provide stark contrast with the rhythmically chaotic and distorted sections (especially, for example, the opening). The only other thing is that it ventures away from any standard song genre. Suffice it to say that this song is 'alternative'. Again, what I really like about this site is that you can get pretty close to professional level critiques on work. Thanks for taking the time to listen!
  11. Greetings. -Your ReMixer name My name (ReMixer name) is Heruwath Lomgil. -Your real name As for my real name, I'd rather not reveal that just yet. Sorry -Your email address Email Address? Same. Sorry -Your website Website? .....Website?....... No real Website to speak of. -Your userid (number, not name) on our forums I don't yet have a userID on your forums, because I haven't yet registered on them. Sorry -Name of game(s) ReMixed This Mix consists of music from Chrono Trigger and from Metroid Prime. -Name of individual song(s) ReMixed I don't know the official names of the songs. I could say I mixed it from Schala's theme in Chrono Trigger and from the main title music in Metroid Prime, but those probably aren't the actual names of the songs. Again, Sorry. -Additional information about game if it had not yet been added to the site, including composer, system, etc. I think the "Additional information" is already on your site. -Link to the original sountrack if it is not one of the sound archives already available on the site I don't know where the original soundtrack can be found. I know what the original sounds like because I played the games a whole lot. Sorry. -Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc. Ok, you're not gonna get a "Sorry" on this one. I excel at making comments (most of them will probably be boring, so feel free to scroll down past this part to the link if you want to). About a year ago, a friend came over to my house to play cards and he brought a CD with him. On that CD were a few of his favorite OC remixes. I didn't recognize the first couple of songs, but when it hit track 3, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 9 KnightsComeMarchingHome OC ReMix by Ailsean, I almost dropped the deck. I wanted to hear that one again. And again. And again. Then I heard some of the Legend of Zelda remixes. I had to know where he found this music! And so, I was introduced to ocremix.org. Within 3 weeks I had downloaded almost every Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid Remix I could find on your site. And there was still so much more! I wished I could Remix stuff like that. And I went on wishing for months. Then, about 5 months ago, I decided it was time to stop wishing and start mixing. So I opened my handy windows sound recorder, plugged my Casio keyboard into the mic and made myself a remix. The 2 pieces I had put together played back flawlessly! But the sound quality was horrible, the intruments I had chosen clashed, and the rythims were disgusting. Yuck. Back to the drawing board. I looked around on your site to find a program that would work better than sound recorder. I couldn't figure out how to use any of the ones you recomended. I just gave up for a few weeks. Then I came accross Madtracker2. I plugged in my brother's Roland U-20 this time, and started remixing again. The Madtracker2 helped my rythim significantly. It improved the sound quality by miles. I rewrote this part, changed the instruments in that part. Nothing worked. There was still something terribly wrong with the 7.5 minute Remix. It was the first 2 minutes. The had to go. Then there was still something wrong. It was the last 5.5 minutes. I actually cried. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Finally, I asked my musically talented brother. He gave me some advice, and I worked on it for another month or so. Big improvements were made. It finally sounded like good music now. I decided to add some more guitar, add more drums and rewrite the drum score. It sounded so much more like an OCRemix. Finally, a week ago, I decided I was satisfied with it. This is final result of the last 5 months of mixing is this ReMix. It is 5:37 long. It starts a bit on the slow tragic side, and it keeps a little of that all the way through, but it really picks up after 2:17. I have worked on a few others a bit, but this one is by far the best I've got. I'll probably get started refining the others now that I think I'm done with this one. As to the name of the mix, it changed several times during the making. There are probably many more creative names for it, but this is the best one that comes to mind. I got the idea for the remix while watching the end cutscenes from Chrono Chross (in which you see Schala without her hair dyed purple) and Metroid Prime on hard mode (in which Samus takes her helmet off). I thought Schala and Samus look remarkably similar. This remix was inspired by the idea that Samus Aran could be an eventual descendant of Schala. Ok, enough rambling. Go to this address, then click on A Hatchling's Zeal.mp3 to download the mix: Please be careful how many times you download it, seeing as I have very limited bandwidth. I have the ID3v2 tags filled out according to your guidelines with the exception of the TPA Part of a set, because I don't yet know what ReMixID djpretzel will assign. I have more than 8 hours of OCRemixes saved on my computer, and I can't wait to see if mine has what it takes to be in the same playlist. Thanks so much for considering my submission. Heruwath Lomgil ps: had a little trouble sending this the first couple of times, so I apologize if I've sent you several emails
  12. And bits, and bits, and bits - djp Dear DJP and Panel, What is this, two Suzumebachi submissions within a month's time? After over two years of inaction? I'm as confused as you are. I think. No yeah, I am. Regardless, as you have probably surmised, this song is from Mr. DarkeSword's illustrious Kirby Arrangement project, Rise of the Star. It's a bit different from my usual shit. I think. The guitar work was all done in one take because, go figure, after the first take my equipment refused to work, and I ended up having to replace my sound card. Though I eventually ended up getting an E-MU 1820M, which I am quite happy with. And I digress. The percussion is rather simplistic, as in my Xenogears mix (hmm.. maybe I just suck with triple meter.. oh well). I'm most proud of the keyboard work, which was played live as well, and obviously quantized (HA). Also, I'd definately like to point out and thank Darangen and Mr. Ansari for helping me with the mixing/mastering side of things (not to mention, Shariq, for the cracking of the IRC whip). You can find it here: If by some chance my server dies or something, you know where to contact me (AS USUAL) ok afk. Love, Ty "Suzumebachi" Guenley <3

Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc. While playing the SFA rom on Callus, I had my bass turned up really high, and noticed how great Ryu's bassline is. I originally had made this up as a drum'n bass mix, but after some posts on the forums and some great advice by Harmony, I added some string harmony and then shakuhachi counterharmony to that, while aiming to keep a driving d'n'b line.
  16. Alias: NegaC E-mail Address: negac@hotmail.com User ID: 19571 Game: Sonic and Knuckles Song: Flying Battery Zone Comment: I made this remix using FruityLoops, taking me a 2 or 3 weeks, probably more, to complete in my spare time. The reason I decided to remix this song is because Flying Battery is by far my favorite song out of any of the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog games. I just can’t get enough of it, and strive to find all the remixes I can of it. That’s all I can think of to say. Thank you for your time. I apologize if you receive this e-mail multiple times.

Original soundtrack has already been added to the site. I have a recording of the original NES track here: My remix is located here: Its been a while but I believe I put the time to good use. I had a fairly active thread in the "Works (In-Progress & Completed): OC Remixes." Here is a link to it: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=58790&sid=06d4782cb59e9793152c1d4b4508cee9 I have taken the advice I have received from you when this work was first judged (on May 12 2005) very seriously. I have also received a lot of inspiration and motivation from the forum members. The link to the original judging: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=57848&sid=3e83266ba0333dd3b4780ac1826065e8 I think it would be wise to remind or inform you that this song comes from the last (out of dungeon) area. A mysterious cave-like place with red rock walls, once a city of the dwarves but taken over by loads of hideous creatures and, of course, the infamous "Evil One." The song features some sound effects that "tell a story" in a way and that would be appreciated by most who are familiar with the game. I did my research and found out that Jun Chiki Chikuma was the original composer for Faxanadu. At this point I think it is safe to claim that I have listened to this song more than any other song in my life. I like it, but I have found that, everyone's opinion about it is quite different. (I started getting conflicting advice in the wip thread.) Most like it, some do not. One important note to mention for listening is that if your headphones or sound system tend to dull mid-tones and accentuate the high and low, then you might miss a lot. On all the headphones I have tested listening to this - its sounded good, but I tried it out on a crappy speaker system I own and was so upset with the quality of the sound that I decided to throw that system out. Having a song on ocremix.org is a very serious goal of mine. ... It would be such an honor. I really hope you enjoy it. Glen
  19. What up judges? First off, the essentials: The Song: Remixer Name: LordMaestro Real Name: Ross Kmet E-Mail Address: LordMaestroX@gmail.com Name of game remixed: Donkey Kong Country 2 Name of song remixed: Enchanted Wood Original Composer: David Wise There really isnt much to say about this mix. Lots of texture, a variety of tones, very rythmic. I decided to stay closer than usual to the original peice (but, I dont really think in the long run I stayed that close at all) because what it presented was a source tune that could be well written into a laid back, enchanting groove, which luckily was exactly what I was going for. I did use the FL generator Plucked!, but, I really messed with it alot, and despite Plucked's unpopularity, I think that I got a really warm tone that cut through the layers and texture in the background well, which is exactly what I would have wanted in a lead instrument, and honestly, I dont think there is anything wrong with that tool. Well, anyways, enjoy the song. Ross
