  1. I read the topic title and instantly thought "You stay classy, San Diego!" Seriously, it's been a badass ten years. It's downright flooring to think of how much has changed, and 2010 should continue to be quite transformative, hopefully all for the better
  2. I'm all up in your birfday, postin ur REMAX.
  3. Please indicate that you use it, if you do, and eventually this page: http://ocremix.org/workshop/skill/reaper should fill up. It's actually kinda annoying to add new values as these fields are bitwise and adding one changes the bitwise total for all the others. It's a bit technical, but it's the reason we don't wanna add every last DAW under the sun. However, Reaper has become a staple, so I think it's earned its place.
  4. Perhaps this: http://www.museresearch.com/receptor2.php or this: http://www.smproaudio.com/index.php/en/products/v-machines/vmachine or maybe even one of these: http://openlabs.com/ A good, powerful laptop w/ 4GB+ RAM and an i7 would take you a VERY long way and be solid enough to do some serious work on. Without knowing your budget, it's hard to provide specific advice. I think that advice was more aimed at the standard size of laptop HDDs as opposed to external drives being faster...
  5. It's downright asinine. I've had to write up paragraphs of text and then take a SCREENSHOT of notepad and send that to them, just to make them happy. I thought about this a bit, and I have only one theory that would explain it - everything on their backend must go through some sort of OCR/watermarking process before it hits support staff, to ensure confidentiality, allow for uniform searching and archiving, and prevent fraud. The problem is that they're taking a one-size-fits-all approach to document upload, basically - I've no doubt they actually NEED all those protections for things like contracts, voided checks, etc., but when all I'm doing is answering a question they asked, in writing, and I can't do it via email, it basically puts me in the ridiculous position of having to make a JPG out of a notepad doc. Also, yes, I sent them a perfectly fine PDF, and whatever process they have mangled it completely, and it came out blank on their end, and they referred to it as a fax. And when I talked to someone on the phone, he said they just recently added PDF support (welcome to the 21st century!) and that it still wasn't working right.
  6. I believe the INTENT is to enable a higher level of scrutiny on customers that MIGHT be using PayPal accounts for donations to support file-sharing services that MIGHT host illegal content, but I already explained that we review submissions, that it's all fan-made video game mixes, etc. The real problem isn't necessarily the policy itself, but the ineptness & brute force approach in attempting to enforce it...
  7. You do realize that this is actually a form of incentive for us to post mixes like this? If it gets long-time lurkers to finally participate and say something, that's kind of a plus At any rate, I figured I would chime in again since we did in fact receive the hailstorm reaction we expected; I agree with a LOT of the criticisms, and everyone involved in this mix can - and has - done better, that almost goes without saying. But so many comments focus on the lyrics and the production, which deserve the flack, but ignore the actual arrangement. Pretend they were singing something else, and pretend the production was a LITTLE better (I don't think it's awful by a stretch) - the actual incorporation of the themes is, to me, pretty cool. Of course, to enjoy music, you shouldn't HAVE to pretend, but that just speaks to where our respective tastes & preferences lie; I can listen over some silliness and forgive some laziness if I feel like there are some well-executed arrangement ideas going on. Now, for all you folks who chimed in and haven't posted in a blue moon - or ever - before this mix, how about throwing some positive comments to a few of the other 1,800+ mixes maybe you DID enjoy, past & present?
  8. I actually, legitimately think it would have been preferable for it to go through the panel, just so the haters had some additional perspectives on why it made it through when other more "serious" mixes are rejected, etc., and also because it sets a new precedent in terms of obscene material. By the same token, I didn't find direct-posting it hugely problematic, either, as it was bound to be polarizing regardless. Also, http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01424/ - more by The Crakaz, with smarter lyrics.
  9. We increasingly find ourselves in a situation where we cannot effectively promote ReMixers' work without enabling some form of reviewing on external services; YouTube "Likes/Dislikes", and probably in the future Facebook "Likes". At least w/ Facebook, it's only positive and not negative. Hopefully, this won't cause too much of a popularity contest and/or make people only want to ReMix popular games/series, which has always been our fear with regards to ratings of any kind, and the reason we've steered clear of them for so long. I'm optimistic in my high expectations of both artists and listeners that anything we do in this arena avoids the pitfalls of popularity contests and the negative drama and conformity they can bring with them.
  10. If you wanna get technical and go back to the more accepted definition of "remix," they really aren't, actually - they don't (re)use the original game audio. It does take some amount of decision-making and creativity to take a MIDI and decide which instruments to swap out, and where, but we're really looking for much more than that, and we always will be. Also, my personal take is that if I want to hear the original composition - verbatim - I'll just go for the original instrumentation as well.
  11. Well, you KNOW Revenge of Shinobi is gonna catch my eye This might pass the panel as-is, it's definitely solid and you should be proud. Since it's already been submitted, it's a wait-and-see, but on the off chance they ask you to resubmit, PLEASE DO, I definitely wanna see this posted, as a huge RoS fan. My thoughts? Emunator's right on the intro piano; not so much the decay, in my opinion, but the velocity & thinness of the sample - patch used sounds a little tinny. Better piano sample, played a bit softer, would give this mix the intro it deserves. I might up the bass a little - it's good! So yeah, esp. w/ the acoustic guitar bits, I'm digging this. Should be interesting to see what the panel says.
  12. I want a Zur scepter so at con panels Lord Kril can say: "It takes more than a scepter to rule... even on OverClocked ReMix!"... then I can press a button and this badass spike will come out of the top of the scepter and everyone will shut it. Yeah.
  13. FIVE WHOLE PEOPLE, playing Space Harrier, sit-down version. At a bowling alley. Back in the early 90's. Two-player: Street Fighter Alpha, high school band trip, Canada. Trumpet players tend to have huge egos, but I repped low brass and shut everyone out - not that any of us were half-decent. Had a crowd of 15 or so. I think the key word here is "attracted" - to me, that rules out getting up on stage, etc., in that it has to be organic & create its own audience, not involve an existing one...
