Possible OCR soundtrack project for a game I'm working on
Dj Mokram replied to FireSlash's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
True. On another hand, the person in charge of the level music, could also do the level boss theme in the continuity. That's called non-linear music, and it has become the trend in modern games. The music generally accelerate when there's more action on screen, then slow-down when you switch to some exploring. All without having a blank in the song, and while keeping the same melody core in substance. I dunno if it's hard to incorporate that kind of feature though. -
I don't know what kind of knowledge you already have in terms of audio engineering. -First, you may want to learn using a simple wave editor. Try Audacity. It's free, powerful, quite easy to understand, and it's also well documented. -Next you'll have to get a sequencer, commonly known as DAW, short for digital audio workstation. They will allow you to do multitrack editing / recording. Free ones includes LMMS or Reaper. Well documented too. -After playing with midi a little bit, you'll probably want to use some virtual instruments, or VST instead. You can find some free ones here. On a side note, the Korg Nanokey got some nice octave up/down buttons, and pitch modulators. So you'll have access to the whole range in a few button press. Don't forget to check this site tutorials, you'll find some great tools. Hope this helps you getting started.

Actually I've done this numerous times, recorded from old Tape & MD player, from TV out' and of course from DS & PSP. There is some loss inevitably, but using some wave editor, you can clean the noise, enhance the track & add filters. One tip though: If you got a laptop, cut your external mic input ( not the line in) if you got one integrated into the frame, or the screen. This way you can avoid some of the extra static noise.

I'm looking at track 5 - Mysterious Woods. Would it be ok with you if I upload the remix on OCremix temp storage when it's done? Don't worry by the way, I'll get to work fast, and I still have lots of memories from this dreamy chapter of the saga. But it's not about being uber, or up to the standards (which are way to high for me right now). It's just I'm kind of a perfectionist, so I better start now cause it'll take me some time.

I get the feeling that the good ol' Ken Masters theme will see some tribute during this event.

What a surprise! Seriously I'll never be able to understand this kind of recklessness coming from a bunch of smart people that expect me to pay 800$ for some unfinished product. You seem very knowledgeable when it comes to Sound Font technology. I've already seen the potential, but as you mentioned, the GUI issue makes it tedious to approach head on. It reminds me when I was only using Wave samples, and had gigas of data to pick from... But it always took so long to find the right sound, that I would inevitably end forgeting my idea.

But does it suffers from an unbalanced sample quality like Colossus?

The adventures of duane and brando: Mega Man 2 - Rap Music video
Dj Mokram replied to Bigfoot's topic in General Discussion
That Rockman 2 video was awesome. I admit that some of the boss voices pinch the ears a little bit. But I also take in consideration the amount of work that this whole thing represents. Thanks for sharing this. -
It's a shame, really. It froze my computer yesterday while I was trying to load some sfARK format bank. Guess no developper ever gives crap about that format, even with sf2+. On a side note Overcoat, If you don't mind, I would be really interested in your feedback on RA?

REALLY easy, simple Chrono Trigger Fanfare request
Dj Mokram replied to nightmare975's topic in ReMix Requests
Done. Give me a shout if you need anything else. EDIT: the host time is up for this remix. If someone else ever wants to listen to it again, just post here and I'll put a link back. -
Anyone interested in some downloadable midis of Links Awakening's soundtrack? This is not the whole soundtrack, but I thought it could still be useful to someone. Sounds like a great project, filled with a lot of memories for those behind it. I hope it can come to fruition during this year. I dunno if I can bring the whole rock-electro-orchestral-melancholic vibe to life, but I'll give it a try.

Roger that. I will definitely enquire about the legal issue, since I'm curious to know the answer too.

You're welcome. Now you have no excuses not to make some kick ass remixes!

VG music have this particularity of recreating a bond between emotions and memories, associated with the event of actually doing something in the game. Whereas on the other hand, you're only spectator of an anime or a movie (even if you feel something about it). I agree with the fact that you can totally love an OST without having ever played the game. But in this case, you associate the feeling with memories of something that took place outside off the game context. Personnaly, I listen to VG music a lot. And since I'm new at remixing, "study" would be the most appropriate term to qualify my approach. I'm more in the process of learning than enjoying, cause I see the music differently now . But in general I got pretty eclectic taste. I believe a lot of the people from this community are more open-minded, when it comes to music, than the vast majority of the population. That, IMO is due to the fact that more and more, video game music is widening, mixing genres and references, getting better and better. And people are starting to realize that VGM is not just 8bit sounds that makes your ears bleed.

Glad someone noticed! Rockman & Forte needs some support. As a matter of fact, I'm currently remixing the Intro stage. I've listened to your renditions: there could be some improvements, and Gario did a big part of the work in pointing them out. Anyway, I'm following this from close range. If you're really planning to get the whole soundtrack done, that would be quite interesting.

Don't be mad afterward if that sentence backfires at you. I'll listen to the album, and post if I'm confident I got enough skill to do something good. No cutout, half-finished things here. A good game deserves some good remixes.

Just found out about Fan banners, they rock. And it can help people finding common interests. I'll be using one. Many thanks to The Coop & Txai for the links.
-
Thanks, I've learned something here. And even thought I've never played House of the Dead, I learned typing with "Typing of the Dead" .

This one is on my top priority list right now... with almost 35 other things. More seriously: one of my favorite games, one of my favorite composer. Yet no remix on the vanishing horizon... I can't say It'll be done in 2 days, but it's coming up, that's for sure. It'll be a solid challenge. Personally, I'll be going for the "Wyern" battle all the way.

REALLY easy, simple Chrono Trigger Fanfare request
Dj Mokram replied to nightmare975's topic in ReMix Requests
Here's the original source: 'Chrono Trigger - Fanfare 2' And I'm jumping in too... hope the requester is still among the living. Can you tell us what kind of remix you're looking for? (Genre, duration, etc.) -
Will definitely give it a try next week. On another note, I often wondered something about internet VG radios: Does playing some original game's music exposes you to some legal issues, even when airing on some small radio host, or with limited audience? Cause I was thinking back about "Gamin Fm", and I dunno if it ended because of this.

OCR01809 - Lufia "Flowers, Life and Memory"
Dj Mokram replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I wouldn't call this remix a "song", but rather a "piece", like a piece from a score. At least that's how 'Flowers, Life and Memory' sounds to me. The memories it brings sure hit the right spot, if you've ever played the Lufia games. The overall orchestral presence is not as overwhelming as it could be, due to lack of reverb. It could have taken a lot more space, but the articulation is remarkable nonetheless. And as Dj Pretzel stated, the liberty in the use of silence is a sign of one's mastery. Some would think that 7 minutes is quite lenghty... But I'll go ahead and say that's the right amount of time to develop the story and share the feelings it conveys. And in the end it's pure bliss. Made me dream of an entire fan-arranged Lufia album. -
What are you listening to?

Thanks for that info, I was "struggling" with at least 3 IRC client, and Chatzilla fixed the problem nicely! It's pretty easy to figure things out, I'll play with it a little bit more... and hopefully join that next, very interesting & challenging, "one hour practice session".

-Personal complain mode: ON How about Capcom stops messin' around, and finally delivers the long awaited remake of Bio Hazard 2 we're all (meaning only myself) craving for... Ah, sorry, my mistake. They've already done that with this upcoming pile of old-new rubbish called "Darkside Chronicles". For future reference, the insidiously poisoned trailer can be seen here: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/46617.html For Pete's sake, how could they manage to get that level of performance on a Wii, raising the expectations and anticipation so high, then ruin it all with a FPS that isn't even an FPS, but an animated cg movie with a couple of interactive cutscenes, and a lot of blinding eye candy. -Personal complain mode: OFF Anyway, a new CVS would rock, if they could ditch the horrid Morigan sprite. I'm a big Rockman fan. But I think the point of these HD remake is obviously the online contents and precisely the multi-player mode, thus the fighting game probability. But maybe they could make an HD version of "Megaman: the Power Fighters", arcade iteration from 1996, and quite enjoyable IMO... but not popular enough I guess.
