  1. Sorry I took so long, didn't see your reply. What I meant is that there's a consistent decay to a point, and then it just suddenly drops off. like you've got a long decay but a short release, if you're familiar with envelopes; typically what works better for crashes is a longer release, because that's how cymbals sound in real life. They have a really sharp attack, then the sound starts to decay more and more slowly as it vibrates
  2. I really think this track would benefit from a bit more verb, delay, and pads pads pads. I also really don't like that synth bass, sounds weak and cheap. The chip writing could use some envelope modulation, velocity changes... anything to make it pop more. I think that's the main offender when it comes to dryness, and although a lot of times it's cool to have a dry chip sound since that's how they are when actually run through a tracker, it just doesn't feel too appropriate here. I love a lot of the ideas here though, with some more processing and development it'll be really cool. It just really lacks energy at the moment
  3. I've learned about 99% of what I know about speed running SM from watching other people play (people who are REALLY REALLY GOOD). I first found Garrison's run at about 51 minutes a few years back... and for some reason, Super Metroid speed running had gained a TON of traction lately, and so rediscovered Garrison recently. He streams on twitch (Garrison_tt is his twitch handle, I *highly* recommend watching him), and he and Kottpower have been trading the world record for Any% runs over the past few months (it's traded hands about 4-5 times now, to give you an idea of how fiercely these guys are running these days). Zoast also streams frequently on twitch, he's got the record for Low% Ice, Low% Speed Booster, Reverse Boss Order, 100% Collection Rate, and 3rd place for Any%, as well as 1st place for the beginning-to-Power-Bombs split... if you couldn't tell, he's also another good runner to watch. If you're looking to get better at the game and learn techniques, I really recommend watching people stream or just watching youtube runs by any of those guys. Fun fact, Lobosjr, who's 25th on Deer Tier Any% runs, is also really good friends and band mates with Brandon L Hood of the chiptune scene (I went and hung out with B-Hood and Theory of N for my album release, great fun). It's weird to know that these people actually exist, and having a connection with them is possible
  4. I was loving it.... then I heard the Gross Beat just before 4:00 and I almost shit myself with joy. Ninmark can do no wrong, imo
  5. Happy 12th birthday, you guys <3 Oh, I guess I just answered KT's question too!
  6. Oh LAWDY is my track dated! I know I keep saying it, but I seriously will try to revisit my track before the final deadline, just SO much other shit going on, keep badgering me man! EDIT: Holy. Shit. I opened my project file. It is disastrous. It will not be an easy or quick fix. But hopefully I'll still be able to do it DOUBLEDIT: If you haven't already, your inbox Kougar. Sending an update; it's FAR from where I want it to be, but it's certainly coming along. Wow, a side by side comparison was like, holy shit. Night and day, so apparently I'm doing something right.
  7. Oh, right, didn't even think about that. Not that I forgot about the deadline, just, things are in weird places in my brain at the moment
  8. Haha, it's all about figuring out routes and tricks and learning the gamut of advanced techniques and physics exploits the game has. Super Metroid has been one of my favorite games for... actually, now that I think about it, I recall it being my very *first* video game experience. I was probably 4, and it was set up as a SNES demo in a... Best Buy, I would assume, and my brother and I played it and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I hadn't played again until around the time I was 13 or 14, and I bought a SNES basically just for MMX, Super Mario World, and of course, Super Metroid So I've been playing casually for a long time, then wanted to learn more of the game and make it more interesting after a while. Then I realized I could take it further and compete with other really good speed runners when I first saw someone stream a Super Metroid speed run about a year ago. So it's a long process, but I love the game so much that it's well worth it in my opinion. Running a game you have intense nostalgia with might help the process along too, because it's very hard for it to get old. Keep that in mind if you want to start running games, because otherwise it gets VERY frustrating VERY quickly
  9. Ben actually does a pretty good SM64 run, I think he's around 30 minutes for 16 star or something
  10. Yeah man, if you can get more comfortable with the game, I certainly recommend it. I've been working on speed running Super Metroid (though much more casually till recently) for probably 3 or 4 years, and I'm just now starting to get good at it. I'll definitely have to look into that! EDIT: lol, those piranha plant jumps... holy shit I may have to look into that as well... though what I've seen (which I promise is VERY little, so I could be really misguided) of BT looks more tedious than fun. Hit sub 11 minute Varia (getting much more consistent on the Kraid quick-kill glitch) and about 18:30 on power bombs tonight, which was pretty huge for me
  11. Not at all. I jumped into the WCRG last year, and literally knew basically no one on the site. The experience has led me to meet some great friends/musical allies (ectogemia among them <3 ), as well as forcing me to really, REALLY improve as an arranger/composer/producer. I *highly* recommend joining the competitions when you can if there's one that interests you. The gauntlet-styled compos are great because no one gets eliminated, and you're on a team so you get to know your teammates a lot better. I was on a team with Rozovian and SuperiorX, and I'm friends with both now, as well as working on project mixes for the two of them and staffing a project as talent eval for SupeX (which I should stop slacking on ) Basically, take any opportunity you can to meet people, and take every opportunity to WRITE WRITE WRITE. The WIP forum is a great place to start letting people know you exist and what you're capable of, and honestly I'd pound out a couple tracks for feedback in the WIP forum before entering a compo. The next WCRG is at least a couple months away though, so you've got some time. Hope to hear more from you soon EDIT: Quite the slice of luck that both Rozo and ecto posted here, heh
  12. I've always found speed running fun to watch, and when you find a game you like to run, really really enjoyable. Anyone else speed run any games? I've been running Super Metroid more and more seriously since a little before MAGFest (I only do Any% runs as of right now). I'm getting better, though the process is frustrating. I'm consistently sub 20 minute power bombs, but I'm working a new strat for Draygon and keep dying on him; I'd be around 35 minutes after killing him if I got there. My best run is 46 minutes by the game clock, but I didn't time it in real time... my estimation is about 1:03-1:05 (which would put me at about 51st-54th on Deer Tier, which, once I get set up to record my runs, I'll submit to) If anyone wants to have a Super Metroid race, I'd love for you to challenge me We could do it over Skype, and I'm getting more and more convinced I need to set up on twitch.tv for live streaming of speed runs. Jehm Faulking (who runs Insert Coin Theater on twitch) and I have raced before, and have talked about doing live streamed races. I'd also like to get into speed running other games.. any suggestions there? I've been thinking more and more about Pokemon Yellow, it looks like a pretty fun one to run (and isn't quite as long as most of the other games, sitting around 2 hours for top tier runners). What think? Edit: Just successfully killed Draygon right at 35, but died just before Ridley at about 44
  13. Mmmmm I really dig that kick drum. The crashes are mixed waaaaay too loud, and sound really static when played in succession. Light chorusing might help with that, and they might even benefit from some additional reverb.. the decay time is pretty odd The chord progression is also pretty static, the track would benefit greatly from some changes there, especially in the bassline. A lot of the melodic interp and structural changes are pretty cool though, nice work there Ope, ending was a little sudden, I think that could be doctored a bit too I don't have the capacity for a full critique, my eye feels like it's about to explode from sinus pressure, not to mention I've already been up all night Sounds like a good start though, I'd like to hear it developed more
  14. Amp is still pretty cool, the other two are pretty dated I'd like to take another crack at "No Ticket!" with better sounds though, cause I like the arrangement. However, "Planes, Trains, and Auto 'n' Beat" is not only very dated/not great, but a complete fucking nightmare to type
  15. Don't sell yourself short Another thing you could do is add vocals over top of tracks. I remember you offering to do some choral style stuff over AiaDR when I said I was needing something of the sort, and even though I didn't end up using any vox whatsoever in the final version, don't let that stop you from mocking up your own version if you need it for a portfolio. I'm sure other's would be the same way, provided you ask them first
  16. Hey do we have/are we getting a sub forum? Could be useful for WIP feedback and stuff to polish tracks, and it'd take some of the burden of being omni-present for feedback off of our excellent album heads
  17. I, too, am one of these delays. I'm about done with a school project, and with another high priority mix, so I'll be able to finish this one up pretty soon
  18. Yes yes yes Kevin is the jam and does awesome art stuff. Highly recommended!
  19. CHRIST man, just when I was starting to feel good about my albums! I'm not even a minute into the first tune as I'm writing this and I'm already in love with the charm exuded by your tracking. EXCELLENT stuff man, I'll be listening to this one for a while (and paying for the album, once I get home )
  20. Hahahaha. Can't wait to come up with the next ridiculous name, TONS of stuff planned for this year, really really excited. Thanks for all the support y'alls
