  1. Version 3 Not sure if I eliminated the transparency problem, but I think this might be a step in the right direction? Also I messed with the 2:08 section a bit as well
  2. I like it, it's got a cool groove going for it! I think something needs to be done with the Kick and Snare samples, they sound a bit disconnected from the song to me. It really shows on the quick double-kicks, some dynamics would help out a bit I'm thinking.
  3. Ok, second version, played with the filters and sounds a bit, let me know if it's better/worse Gray Skies Version 2
  4. Welcome to OCR Pretty cool beat, I think after a while the simple Kick-Snare-Kick-Snare could use some variation, personally. One thing that I noticed was a lot of the sound-effect sampling went on for too long. Something can only repeat so many times before it stops being as cool as the first time! Also the song seems almost entirely made out of sampled sounds from MM, which is pretty cool but it also leaves it feeling pretty empty, some synths or other instruments might spice it up a bit?
  5. Really? Alright I'll see what I can do with it, is the alternate instrument at around 1:12 also suffering from the same thing?
  6. I figure both of you are referring to the section after 2:08? I haven't been able to find the middle-ground of power and calm on that bit, and in hindsight it's way too weak at the moment.
  7. Sounds pretty cool, there's a lot of cool riffs in here and I can see something good coming from them! Right now my issue is that it's one long verse-train. I don't feel like there's any breaks, bridges, or anything to set apart each section from each other. It all feels like the same energy and speed, it needs some variation! Also, as for now it's a bit far from the original, a bit of the melody in there would be cool
  8. I see where you guys are coming from, I suppose my view is a little limited by my own tastes of music. I take a lot of enjoyment from hearing new sounds and good custom "engineering" so to speak, but that's not all there is to it, of course! Darangen pretty much summed it up I suppose!
  9. Could you timestamp which part in particular you're talking about? I feel like most of the instruments could be considered "wub wub dubstep" unless you mean the whole range of sounds overall? Either way, thanks for the feedback
  10. Cool stuff, I listened to it without hearing the original to see if I could remember which level it was from and I was pleased with the results! Good use of a different energy while still keeping the manic feel of urgency from the game!
  11. While I don't see them as "cheating" persay, I think using them verbatim is lazy. On one hand, people like Amon Tobin have made incredible music based around the idea of sampling Jazz drums and turning them into hip-hop or DnB. But on the other, using a preset drumloop and tossing some premade synths over it lacks a lot of creativity. I know it seems like a lot of people in here don't mind it, but I believe that if you're not trying even a little to push the bounds of your music, then why are you making it? Just one guy's opinion, but I guess to sum up, as long as you do something unique with the loop/sample/patch, then you shouldn't feel guilty.
  12. Trying out my hand with changing the tone of a popular piece. I never played Skyward Sword but I love this theme, it has a huge, adventurous feel to it and I've always loved that. My version is a very relaxed, reflective Dubstep mix with elements from both The Ballad of the Goddess and the original Zelda's Lullaby mixed in. Though I'm a fan of pushing the boundaries of Dubstep so it all doesn't sound like "Wubwubwub" (and thus making it an easy target for hate) I decided that keeping it simplistic and using more traditional Dubstep instruments complimented the new tone much more. To be clear, by 'using more traditional Dubstep instruments" I don't mean that I used patches, everything was made in NI Massive on my own (for whatever that's worth). I still think it's missing some things, so feedback is appreciated Listen to it here: Gray Skies
  13. Without reading much of the rest of the thread, here's just my two cents: 1. If all you're hearing is "the same WOMP WOMP" it's possible that it isn't the genre's fault, but the producers you're hearing it from. Some people gravitate towards using pre-made synth patches, which can mean a lot of songs sounding similar. 2. Dubstep can very easily be melodic. Again, this is up to the producer. There are strengths in each song that can be brought out through single-note rhythms and sound-landscapes or through melody and composition. A combination of those two things usually achieves some of the best Dubstep (or rather, ANY modern electronic music) and there are many songs that do this. 3. VGM and Dubstep go hand-in-hand, they're practically born to be together. Back in the 8bit and 16bit days, the composers had little to work with as far as instruments. In order to make poppy sounds that stood out, whether in music or sound-effects, they often would throw dynamics onto certain aspects of their synths. These dynamics are the focus of Dubstep, found in LFO Modulation (wobbles). It's only natural for the two to gravitate towards each other. In short, I don't ask or want everybody to love Dubstep. I'm fine with there being people that hate it. That being said, nobody has any place in discounting it as a genre or saying "it has no place here". That last line goes against everything that OCReMix is about. It's appreciation of VGM, in ANY way. It's about opening your mind and seeing how others appreciate it, and coming together around that. Hope this helps a little bit in seeing my views on this matter
  14. While I can't say I know anything about 8-bit arrangement, I really enjoy this quite a lot great work!
  15. I really liked the ambient noises in the background during the first half, they add a lot to the tone of the song! The minor key sounds great, very moody, like an overcast and rainy Verdanturf. I feel like the snare could use a little more sizzle, maybe? Try using rim hits a bit, during the more laid back bits, and build into the full snare, it might add a bit of dynamic
  16. That piano needs some dynamics on it. Adjust the volumes and impact of each note to vary, as it sounds veeery binary right now. As Timaeus said, the guitar and bass are too compressed
  17. This game had a phenomenal soundtrack, cool to see it getting some love! For one thing, I think the whole mix is rather quiet. I have to turn my speaker volume to max before I could clearly hear everything. I love the patient, ambient feel to the whole track. Nothing seems rushed and it flows very nicely! I think this could do with being a bit longer and having some variation, or even a different instrument or two come in at one point, but as-is it's very good
  18. I kinda agree with Rockos that the tape stop really isn't out of place, I rather like it but the energy afterwards needs to ramp up in order for it to be warranted
  19. I realize what you're getting at, I just think it's not very productive to one's own creative side to do what you think will not get hated on the most. likes/dislikes on YouTube mean nothing, and the comment section even less, just make what YOU like, ya know? /philosophyrant ^^
  20. I'm not sure that sweeping it under the rug is a good approach, why not just let the people who enjoy this, enjoy it and let the people that don't like the genre just not listen to it ^^' Most of the mixing and such has been addressed by the others. I'll note that the Snare definitely has too much low-end and not enough crack to it. Cool track to be sure, but it can still use some work to be a little more solid
  21. I typically use Lucid Samples Top Club Drums Vol. 1 for at LEAST 1 layer of my Kick and my Snare in almost every song. They have a great punch that works well to provide the backbone to the instrument. For other stuff my latest one has been the Blade Runner Dread DnB Drums pack. Not as powerful as Lucid stuff, but they have more textured kicks and snares, which fill out the other layers nicely
  22. As a long-time fan of As I Lay Dying, this makes me sad. I sincerely hope that it's not true, but the world is pretty messed up and I won't be shocked if it is. Really horrible events by all means :/
  23. Hey guys, this is just something I cooked up when I was bored one day. It was a way for me to practice creating glitch effects on Drums and seeing what worked and what didn't. I took an old Deadmau5 song called "I Forget" (the precursor to I Remember) which is just a piano chord-progression and added the beat to it to see what would happen and I really liked the result! So anyways, I had to post it on Tumblr because Soundcloud copyright-busted me for using the Deadmau5 song >_> here it is!
  24. http://www.twitter.com/KanohiMusic I have many accounts, but that's the one dedicated to my music and I only post occasionally
