  1. Personally, I feel as if it's less about any particular progression and more about what's being placed around it. Like where did the song come from, where it's going, and the spacial aspect. Also, voicing really helps and timbre as well. To use a metaphor I guess, the feeling of floating also necessitates experiencing the feeling of being grounded. Or at least knowing that feeling. So you have to have that base around the feeling or else there really is no magic to it. In short, I believe replicating that feeling in music is imo, not something that comes simply down to a chord progression but everything around it. I'll point to a personal example and one from a well known composer. So in a piece I'm working on right now, at about 1:50 I think I achieved the feeling of floating or at least I always feel like I'm floating haha. The chord and the progression to it isn't particularly interesting imo but it's the build and the atmosphere that help take it there. Also, windchimes always help everything sound beautiful and angelic ☺️ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rvdaLltuhBEQlTqk6wGppcF3DgEzztsM/view?usp=drivesdk Mahler's 2nd symphony the last movement. Oh man....oh man. I feel like I'm going to just rise and ooof. Help lol. At around 5m until the end is just a clinic in tension and power. Wow. Now there are some beautiful chords of course but on piano it wouldn't send me I don't think https://youtu.be/gQctkKJMgM0 Edit: also I'm pretty sure Leonard Bernstein ascended during this lol
  2. Happy new year HLEET!
  3. This is one benefit I'm curious about if I should reconsider: transcribing by ear to fit OCR standards. Since I always go by midi and my style fits it, often I like to go for very light changes in part A, then part B I really begin to move things around and make big changes because often the midi file has run out (because the song would just repeat in game) and I need more material. That's often where I'll start copy pasting but then I'll edit individual parts and begin to play things manually too. I could and have done this all around before but Im just wondering if your way would clean up my own workflow.
  4. Depending on the source, sometimes you have no choice but to do some or all of it yourself. However for me personally, after years of transcribing by ear and trial and error, I don't want to do that anymore haha. It's a thankless job, can be arduous, and frustrating if you aren't into it. Not that I want or deserve extra like... adulation or anything LOL. But it's mostly just a skill that while worth building, is also worth skipping if possible for work flow purposes. But again, sometimes you have no choice either fully or partially. But with that aside, yes there is a uhh, not so secret technique. Midi files. If you're old like me you are probably intimately familiar with them from the early internet days, and if not you may still be haha. Midi files contain some are all of the sources original composition to varying degrees of accuracy. Some people make them (transcribing as I said above) and some people rip them from the source audio when/if possible. With a midi file, you can import that source into your DAW and from there work with it how you will. You can keep it very basic (which is not OCR quality) and slap some instruments where they should be and bam, you got a song. But with the source midi you can also begin to get creative and play around with it, make changes, add things, take them away, etc. Anything you can imagine I suppose. Some people may just use it as a guideline and actually play the parts themselves for humanization, idk. It just depends on you or what you are going for. And again, some people may not need a midi at all if the song isn't that complex or you are building something really different. There really is no one way to do things. TL; DR - I rambled so here is a short breakdown. A shortcut to avoiding transcribing (writing down by ear) is to get a midi file and import it into your DAW. Not all people do this and what people do after that is sort of up to them. Midis arent always readily available and sometimes they aren't well made either so you may have to do it yourself anyway. But that shortcut is often available, especially for older game music.
  5. Wooow, this came out of nowhere! An OCRemix legend bestowing us with a new take on one of the tracks that inspired many like myself.... what a powerful experience. I somehow feel both 13 and 30 all over again ?
  6. Thinking of submitting this version of the piece or something close to it. However I'm not 100% sold on a few things. For one I need to actually go back and fix what I'm sure are areas that have clipping near the end. Secondly, I think the cello could use a bit more touching up as well as some more harmonic spice in the middle. Besides that just not sure if its completely enough as is arrangement wise. But still thinking about it
  7. Hmm I never played the original and I'm not so sure I wanna play this crisis core either. I dunno, just haven't been a big fan of the extended FFVII content really. I'll just wait for the next remake ☺️
  8. It's dancing time ?~. Thanks for the fun song Timaeus!
  9. I was going to let APZX choose anyway!
  10. Right. I apply to the round after this.
  11. Woot woot this was so fun everyone! @APZXyou need to sub that song!!!
  12. Thank you for your wonderful comment! Concerning the two different pieces, it's kinda where I'm going with it. I don't wanna reveal the name yet but it's a play on a more angelic though somber side and an intense, sinister side. I definitely have a lot of work helping those two sides meet but it's (hopefully) the last piece in a set of pieces I've done that have two sides to them. Still, maybe as I begin to build the second half more, I'll come to the conclusion that it's too intense haha. But honestly, I like how relentless it sounds! Maybe I need more power in the first half to compensate ?. I don't know yet! Need to get to the end first. As far as the lack of melody in part two. It's just not written in yet though I'm hoping it takes more of a harmonic, though still present role when I do write it in.
  13. I never knew Chimpazilla could be so spoopy (つд⊂)
  14. Forgot to write it in my little spooky story but the source is The Nightmare Begins from FFVII
  15. What a collaboration! I think this track really hit the feel of Serahs theme on the head. Sometimes I felt it didn't sound big enough but I think that's because I have the ending suite in my head and that has such a massive sound. But when I focus on the track as it is, I really enjoy the intimacy. Shout outs to the whole crew who worked on this and for Jorito for bringing everyone together. Cheers y'all. Edit: lol same time post! The track must have some power to it.
  16. Done my first piece. Shooting for another.
  17. I'm both turbo sad I missed out but also turbo excited to hear all the beautiful works here! Omggg you guys it's happening!
  18. Is this your sub for this month? If so Ill save my comments for then!
  19. Is "The Successor" from FFVIII Halloween enough? Seeing as it's about the succession of witches. Well, sorceresses.
  20. After working through it some more I think this will probably be the final submitted version. Need some more time to think on it and listen but I'm 99% satisfied https://drive.google.com/file/d/1P3oEVCuV0VYvJ6iMMw6qTGxa2Siokbgy/view?usp=sharing
  21. @Hemophiliac just in case you did want to hear the original. Sorry I should have added it for context (if you want haha). https://drive.google.com/file/d/19rIH7Zj_3bP0ROtASzV75e9UHQa_6wWx/view?usp=drivesdk
  22. Hello, back again after going through the submission process and having it sent back fro resubmission. A lot has changed based on judge feedback. The percussion is reworked, the clipping issues have all been solved, some rebalancing done, and a new bassline. Other new additions have also been made, primarily a new vox in the middle and choir at the end. I'm on the fence about some things but I think I need a new voice (or two) for perspective! Thanks for helping as always. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ANhsfBOceY_ZcAMzc6bSl2GDTMRHAiBk/view?usp=drivesdk
  23. I keep thinking something original but I forget about all the choices haha. Ghost Train might be a nice one. I'm going to look for some midis from tv shows or movies first.
  24. I don't know how to be spoopy ?
  25. Woot woot, I'll give it some thought. Good job guys
