  5. Hoh....might be worth trying out simply for writing certain kinds of music. Then maybe later exporting to midi to give it a good touch up. Depends on how well it'll handle kontakt and such I guess.

  8. Well thank you very much for all the feedback! I really do appreciate it. I knew the end concept wouldn't sit well with everyone. I also wanted to just cut the track off entirely (which I've seen done a few times) but I always thought that would be even less consumable haha. Though it's my art, I still want others to be able to enjoy it. Takes some balancing in that respect.
  9. welp, I think i've reached my limit in terms of skill and in terms of ideas at the moment. I'd be mostly banging my head up against the wall so asking for a review since it's mostly ready. Got rid of a lot or all of the clipping but kind of had to cop out by adding a little tiny bit of compression on the master track. Conceptually its supposed to be light vs shadow with each half expressing both sides (similar to what i've done with my previous submissions). The second half is where currently I'm stuck and unsure how or if I want to move forward in any way. i've struggled to get the effect of the huge thunder without blowing up the entire sound in an unpleasant way. Don't think I achieved this lol. The final section I'm unsure if I enjoy the stripped down aspect or if I just can't find anything else to add to it.   10. Keep in mind that I don't really listen to this type of music with any type of frequency and I certainly don't make it so take it with a grain of salt or two haha. So personally the one thing that stands out to me is there is a lack of intrigue. Like it mostly panders around a lot of same elements not bringing much new to the table. They certainly vary from time to time and that's certainly very good but somehow it all sort of ends up feeling kinda samey. Nothing to take away from the monotony, even though it's only been a minute. The question is where can that intrigue come from. It could be harmonic, in the instrumentation, or somewhere else. There is a few points where the low end synth goes on this brief chromatic climb and that was really cool but it only comes in for a bit and goes back to something else. It does this a few times actually. I think something like that which has a cool vibe could be accentuated and showcased. Like do it less often but really make it hit when it does? Idk just spit balling My point really though is I leave it without much of an impression. I don't think you should search for gimmicks or even go all out and create a more wild track and sacrifice refinement. But you gotta break the monotony somehow and if you don't, what I'm listening to really has to be really a strong vibe. Which I'm not exactly feeling here. Anyway, sorry if it wasn't helpful but that's what I got from it. Hopefully someone with more experience in this type of music can help.
  11. Thought about it for awhile, but I think I'm ready to change my name to something shorter while keeping some familiarity for those I've come to know. I'd like my name to be changed to "H36T" please! Though my first submission will always be immortalized haha, I like this shorter version. Pronounced "heat" btw haha.
  12. I love the feel of this and the chord progressions along with the whole atmosphere and timbre of the instruments! Those solos really are great as well. Just a fun track from a place I never expected. I hope you all get together for another jam!
  13. Major update so far. The volume levels are a bit off (especially the bells and later some of the harmony and motifs) and I tend to fix those a bit later but the idea will be the same. Only thing I'm unsure of is if I'll be able to balance everything well enough before I gotta start cutting stuff thats insignificant in the second half. Conceptually though this is what I'm still aiming for 100%.   15. I exclusively use M50x for when I'm working on the tracks but after a session I'll listen on my Sony ear wf1000xm4 buds on my phone and sometimes my HD650's just to see how things sound on different sources.
  16. Another slight update but major in some ways I guess. Until now I've almost exclusively used premade guitar phrases but been working the past few months (slowly lol) on trying to learn how to sequence solos from scratch. Decided to finally put that work to use for this.   17. Personally, I feel as if it's less about any particular progression and more about what's being placed around it. Like where did the song come from, where it's going, and the spacial aspect. Also, voicing really helps and timbre as well. To use a metaphor I guess, the feeling of floating also necessitates experiencing the feeling of being grounded. Or at least knowing that feeling. So you have to have that base around the feeling or else there really is no magic to it. In short, I believe replicating that feeling in music is imo, not something that comes simply down to a chord progression but everything around it. I'll point to a personal example and one from a well known composer. So in a piece I'm working on right now, at about 1:50 I think I achieved the feeling of floating or at least I always feel like I'm floating haha. The chord and the progression to it isn't particularly interesting imo but it's the build and the atmosphere that help take it there.   18. This is one benefit I'm curious about if I should reconsider: transcribing by ear to fit OCR standards. Since I always go by midi and my style fits it, often I like to go for very light changes in part A, then part B I really begin to move things around and make big changes because often the midi file has run out (because the song would just repeat in game) and I need more material. That's often where I'll start copy pasting but then I'll edit individual parts and begin to play things manually too. I could and have done this all around before but Im just wondering if your way would clean up my own workflow.
  19. Depending on the source, sometimes you have no choice but to do some or all of it yourself. However for me personally, after years of transcribing by ear and trial and error, I don't want to do that anymore haha. It's a thankless job, can be arduous, and frustrating if you aren't into it. Not that I want or deserve extra like... adulation or anything LOL. But it's mostly just a skill that while worth building, is also worth skipping if possible for work flow purposes. But again, sometimes you have no choice either fully or partially. But with that aside, yes there is a uhh, not so secret technique. Midi files. If you're old like me you are probably intimately familiar with them from the early internet days, and if not you may still be haha. Midi files contain some are all of the sources original composition to varying degrees of accuracy. Some people make them (transcribing as I said above) and some people rip them from the source audio when/if possible. With a midi file, you can import that source into your DAW and from there work with it how you will. You can keep it very basic (which is not OCR quality) and slap some instruments where they should be and bam, you got a song. But with the source midi you can also begin to get creative and play around with it, make changes, add things, take them away, etc. Anything you can imagine I suppose. Some people may just use it as a guideline and actually play the parts themselves for humanization, idk. It just depends on you or what you are going for. And again, some people may not need a midi at all if the song isn't that complex or you are building something really different. There really is no one way to do things. TL; DR - I rambled so here is a short breakdown. A shortcut to avoiding transcribing (writing down by ear) is to get a midi file and import it into your DAW. Not all people do this and what people do after that is sort of up to them. Midis arent always readily available and sometimes they aren't well made either so you may have to do it yourself anyway. But that shortcut is often available, especially for older game music.

  21. Thinking of submitting this version of the piece or something close to it. However I'm not 100% sold on a few things. For one I need to actually go back and fix what I'm sure are areas that have clipping near the end. Secondly, I think the cello could use a bit more touching up as well as some more harmonic spice in the middle. Besides that just not sure if its completely enough as is arrangement wise. But still thinking about it
