  1. Nah, the lowend cut trick is a classic that is good for anyone. Use a really steep highpass filter that doesn't bump up at the resonance point. For the mixing process, I throw EQs on every sample and synth I use, rollowing off the lows on pretty much all of them except bass/kick. Works wonders.
  2. relevant to Zangief discussion.
  3. In HD Remix, Zangief could be stopped with Fei Long by simply poking him with Fierce Punch, doing weak Flame Kicks if he jumps at you.
  4. Yeah, that's exactly what I want. How much for it? Also, how many controllers do you have? Any games? :3
  5. I'm thinking about getting an NES toploader for my studio because it would look cool, and because toploaders are way more reliable than traditional NES systems. However, there is really a dizzying array of options out there. The original NES2 is $90-100, which is a bit too expensive for me, while 3rd party units can be as low as $15. What do you guys know about toploaders? What 3rd-party units are best? If I get one, will I have compatibility, sound, or video problems? What tools do I need to hook 'em up to my computer monitors?
  6. I've always used headphones. My belief is that unless you have a set of very good monitors, a finely-tuned room, proper monitor and chair placement, and perfect posture (even moving your head slightly can affect phase relationships), it makes more sense to use a pair of nice semi-open or open headphones. Closed headphones are not the best idea because they tend to emphasize bass response. Fun to listen to, but not good for accuracy. I personally use Beyerdynamic DT880s which were a bit pricey, but have served me very well for several years now. These days, the first thing I do in a new project is turn my headphones up about 6db then put a fader on the master track turning it DOWN 6db. This gives me more headroom to work with. After I have a lot of parts in the mix, usually WELL before it is completed, I'll add mastering effects to the master track and bring my listening level down to a normal volume. This is always how I've done it, too. I can't fathom how anyone could produce an entire song and only master it at the end.
  7. It's not YouTube, but I have a walkthrough of my Final Fantasy 6 remix, "Dirt Devil", on Vimeo. Part 2 is coming soon. http://www.vimeo.com/2866973
  8. Hey thanks for all the comments everyone! Hope everyone who hasn't spoken up yet is enjoying the album By the way, some of you might not know that I have a mailing list that I reach out several times a year (at most, monthly, usually bi-monthly). I had been talking about this project to people on it since last year, including track previews and even full downloads. If you're interested in subscribing, just send an email with the subject "subscribe" to list (at) zirconstudios (dotttt) com.
  9. Hey, this is a really cool concept. A few thoughts... 1. The mixing sounds kind of imbalanced. There are some REALLY high frequencies that are hurting my ears on headphones, sounds like some kind of pad (it comes in at the very beginning). 2. Vocals are cool but could use some nice reverb and maybe a bit of a high-end boost (one of the only things that DOES need such a boost in the mix). 3. The bass is really quiet. Might seem like nitpicking but I really like the concept. Keep working on it, I can't wait to hear more.
  10. I don't know, I thought Disgaea's brand of humor was awesome (the first time around, anyway). Games that don't take themselves seriously are sometimes the most fun.
  11. Happy birthday, you encyclopedia of video game music knowledge!
  12. Mass Media Constant is officially OUT! $7.99 for a full quality digital download (plus tip, if you choose). Just click the link to check out streaming previews, read more, and pick it up. While you're at it, listen to the rest of the baller music at Protagonist Records by ReMixers like Audix, Siamey, and sgx.
  13. Haha, yeah, that's the WIP of the track. You can hear some of the changes I made in the final version. I'm still on Progressive Grooves, but both that and Protagonist are non-exclusive, so there's no problem with me having releases on both. However, since MMC is all new material, I'm really pumped about it and proud to have it as an exclusive release with Protagonist.
  14. Yeah, I know some artists who also swear by that technique of recording to tape and then back to Pro Tools (or whatever.) Interestingly, when I tried recording some drum sounds to tape - specifically, kick drum - it sounds like the bass actually got kinda weaker instead of more powerful. The exact OPPOSITE effect I wanted, not to mention more noise. This might have been a bias issue though.
  15. After its completion about half a year ago, my new drum and bass album "Mass Media Constant" is slated for release over at Protagonist Records on February 10th! I originally started this as a project for licensing - film, TV, video games and other such media (hence the name), but decided to turn it into a full EP because I was having so much fun. The final result is far more meaty than my previous EP release, The World Circuit, and I'm very excited about it. You can check out some track previews right on the Protagonist Records site, which is also where you'll be able to order it in digital format. My influences for this one range from LTJ Bukem and Photek to Wagon Christ, BT, Pendulum and The Sims, and no two tracks sound alike. When listening to this, imagine walking through a super-stylized version of Times Square at midnight on a Saturday, looking at all the billboards, hearing music coming from bars and restaurants, and watching cars and buses fly by. That's what I had in mind when writing it.
  16. The news was announced 12/18... http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/free-radical-design-closes-doors ...the same day this topic was made. You know this was an old thread, right?
  17. The answer to this question is almost self-evident; because there is so much good music out there in a virtually limitless variety of styles. No matter how good of a composer you are, I doubt you can write a klezmer piece while also being capable of writing a baroque, classical, romantic, bebop, and bossa nova piece. I also doubt that your skill in writing at any given genre matches the skill of the great composers in any given genre, thus you're going to be playing better music if you play theirs as well.
  18. I'm not one for music festivals, but if I'd go to anything it would be Ultra. Prodigy, Pendulum, Hybrid, Deadmau5, Tiesto, Roni Size, Infected Mushroom... pretty much every big electronic artist on Earth right now.
  19. I also wrote five guides on remixing worth checking out; http://www.ocremix.org/info/Category:Tutorials
  20. I've always been kind of interested in a more intuitive mapping for typing keyboard to MIDI. Seems like most arrangements assign white notes to ZXCVBN and QWERTY with black notes on ASDFGH and 123456. I think this could be done better... though I don't know how, offhand. For people like me, that type ridiculously fast, I could imagine some cool musical applications.
  21. There's the Access Virus Powercore, but you need a Creamware (now Soniccore) dsp soundcard for that.
  22. What are you using to render to MP3? And are you using a limiter on your master track? There's absolutely no reason the volume should be getting changed at all.
