I'm seeing them on the 22nd or something in MD. Good times! I don't like their new CD as much as the one before it, but it's still rad.

http://www.sgxmusic.com/pwn.mp3 Spent about 4-5 hours on this tonight. Just a basic groove right now. Atmospheric stuff, plus HUGE beat and growl bass (I think I've been developing a somewhat signature bass synth style recently). Should I share my combinator bass secrets or be selfish with my patches? hmmmmmm Beginning synth is String Theory. Drums and bass are 100% Reason. Wobbly synth at the end is Feldspar (I fuckin love this $18 synth!). Pads are Majken's Chimera. YuM! I'm thinking this track will be track 1 on my next album. Intro is sexy and everyone remembers what the first few seconds of an album sounds like.

ALTER EGO!!! New Project beginning...

Dude this is pretty badass. Nice job. Are the guitars you? Got anything else like this? -
I don't like it. And I like/make abstract stuff. The main thing that bugs me is that it is so uniform and flat. The composition consists mainly of putting everything right in the center of the 'canvas'. Almost all shapes are conveniently placed so that you can see the whole of it. When photographers take really cool, dynamic photos, they don't usually step back and make sure they get 100% of the subject in the frame. They get up close and take some weird angle that produces really interesting and bold lines across the final image. It is ok to cut out parts of what you feel are the subjects. You need to think about composition and how to make something that moves the viewer's eye around the canvas. I'm not too fond of the colors myself...it kind of just looks murky. If that's what you were going for then that is cool. This piece looks like an exercise in learning graphics tools. You probably learned some tight illustrator skillz though, eh? If you aren't and you are able to, make sure you keep taking the basic drawing, 2d design courses at school if you can. The computer art courses I took were more tech training courses rather than helping me make good art.

Downloading this right now. Do you know about www.jamendo.com ? Pretty sweet site - you should think about posting your album on there. They make great torrents of albums.

I think you can set different Reason instruments to listen to different midi channels. That way, you can just change the channel on your keytar and it will change the instrument.

BT sample CDs reprinted and available

Got my twisted textures for $10 in the mail today. Sorry, probably won't be giving impressions anytime soon. I'm already pretty decent at making the types of sounds it offers on my own, so I won't be using this for my original music very much. I mostly just got it to beef up my sound library for any paid jobs I do that I don't care about being unique and having artistic integrity with . -
Ever think about giving music PRODUCTION private lessons?

$10?? That's only $3 more than working at a fast food place for an hour. Totally not worth my time. What I can teach is HIGHLY specialized. This isn't guitar lessons which you can find anywhere. Thanks, Mustin, I had thought about posting fliers up at my school in the music dept. Guess I'm just doing the lazy thing and posting on craigslist first. I don't have any urgent reason to start this as soon as possible. I should probably give my old music tech prof an email too. -

Well, I put a listing up on craigslist and got no interest . Ta-da! I might try for a few more weeks. -
I went ahead and bought the BT cd plus this ethnic one. Shipping stayed the same, so I didn't feel SO gyped.
-
Yeah, what's up with that? I was about to buy BT's ambient textures CD the other day for $10, but had to pay $12 shipping...wtf is that.

Racks are the shit. Just like Combinators are. In the exact same way! NEET.
-
Pretty rad. Melodic! Very nice. LIke the pads 1 min in. Sometimes the lead rapes my ear a bit more than desired. I think it could be pulled back a bit.
-
Yeah, and it's totally rad! FANX!

OH yeah, I do that a lot with bass synths. A lot of bass synths I make are pretty "buzzy" and don't have a lot of clean low end. Better than EQing up the low end in the synth is to cut it out, then mirror the synth with something 'clean' like a sin or triangle that takes care of the subs! Side chaining isn't always needed - just if your kicks happen while your bass is playing a lot and they are semi similar in important bass frequencies.

I dig it! Super Good stuff. -
Oooh. This old thread. Finished the one that was called 'beast'. Holding onto it for now as probably an album exclusive, but I'll put it up streaming on soundclick for a bit if you guys want to hear. Have No Tyrant http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=102671&songID=5147559 It kinda got all epic, which I wasn't planning, but its cool I think it is my best produced track so far from a technical standpoint. About my low end - actually I don't know if I'm that great keeping the kick and bass from fighting. I do try to EQ them so that there is a notch cut out of the bass for the kick to live in. Try not to have them overlap so much. I was looking into sidechain compression so that the bass would duck a bit when a kick was present, but I got lazy looking for new plugins I might have to buy and I just manually automated dips in the bass amplitude where kicks were. In newmelody, honestly there may not even be any EQ's used in that yet. It was really early. No thought has gone into mixing yet, so everything you hear is pretty straight up. I guess my samples are good? (EWQLSO Silver and Dimension Pro for natural sounds) I think I put both of them through a basic T-Racks patch before rendering which has compressor, multiband limiter, and a soft clipper.

Well, in my case, I do not have to take what I can get because I have a job already, and this is just something to do for fun on the side for a little extra cash. I have no problem holding out and trying to find that one person who wants to learn what I have to offer. I had not even fathomed that any sort of popularity I have in the VGM scene would help me get started. Regarding credentials, I don't think that is terribly important. I have a good portfolio I can point people to - my site with all my free music. It speaks for itself and I think it speaks pretty well, especially to a beginner. I don't think anyone gives a shit about my academic background in this as long as they can tell I have the skill to back it up. I can say, "Do you want to make music in this genre? I can teach you. I think that is strong. By the way, do you guys know of any easily portable, cheap, powered speakers? It might be handy to have so I could hook up sound that doesn't suck ass to my laptop if I'm doing house calls. -

I feel that getting enough people for a workshop on one DAW would be tough. That's really niche. Possibly if your school already had a music production concentration that was popular... -

Hmmm. I'm going to put up a craigslist ad and see if anyone bites. I'm not sure if $20-$30 would be worth it to me, depending on how far I have to drive. I imagine someone older than me, with more money from a job already who wants to jump in but doesn't have the time or patience to fiddle with stuff to get something good. What I can help with is probably worth more than $30 an hour. There are so many things I learned slowly on my own that would have been great if someone just TOLD me outright what I needed to know. And I've taken a couple music tech courses at my old college....the professor knew a lot of about certain things, but almost none of it helped with me making electronic music. -

How much would you charge for a 1 hour lesson?
