You installed the drivers for the keyboard, right? That's the first step. Then Reason should see the drivers and they will be an option to select in the midi preferences. -

What's a good cheapish electric guitar for a beginner? I want to get one maybe this summer. I've been learning a bit of acoustic. I'm not planning on buying an amp, but getting something like PodXT to get it into the computer for recording and whatnot. Is this a good choice?

Rene's (developer of z3ta, dimension, pentagon, sfz, etc) new synth Rapture just came out and it looks hella awesome. He posts in some forums like the cakewalk forums and KVR and he keeps saying stuff like "this is the FATTEST softsynth ever made" and he's usually pretty reserved about boasting about his works. Take that for what its worth. Might wanna check that one out. You can load your own waveforms into it and use em as oscillators. Badass. -

Yeah. Synths were all pretty much Reason except for the chiptuney stuff which I used a free vsti for. The bass I think was some subtractor saw through some scream and unison, eq's and whatnot. It's also mirrored with another bass that's mostly just a low sinewav. The "buzzy" sounding bass didn't have enough lowend, so adding the low sinewav added it in there without sounding like wit was another instrument. Plus, I'm sure I did more eqing, compression, and distortion as I rewired Reason into Acid. A lot of what it takes to make Reason synths hot is the effects chain afterwords. They mostly sound poo poo on their own. All the stutters and reverses and such were done in Acid. I rewire Reason into acid, select little pieces of the reason song I like, solo an instrument, and bounce a nice audio loop from Reason into Acid. Then I have an easy to manipulate piece that I can screw around in with audio edits and vst effects. I used a lot of Camelspace and Camelphat in this song.

I can tell you that getting into the habit of being in only 2 different places (class and computer desk) every day, day in and day out, is a depressing and boring cycle, and it could be affecting your creativity. You live in a dorm, right? Start hanging out with new people and going places.

Ehm, those demos were all pretty cool. I have no idea where your problem is . Do you ever just jam along with your songs? Maybe some sort of less linear sequencing methods are in order...like Ableton Live or something.

Maybe try remixing your failed stuff? Bounce it to audio loops, chop it up, reverse it, slice, etc. Combine a bunch of the failed stuff together, add things on top. Do something weird you haven't done before.

Ooh I forgot about that one. That was a pretty minor slump for me. It wasn't a big deal, but I was a bit bugged out because I wasn't getting anywhere with some of the visual design things I wanted to be doing (logo, new website....which are all finally complete and I am pretty happy with em) in addition to the music. Sometimes having regular listeners is a curse because you'll get aims or emails asking "when's the next track coming out??????" and then you feel obligated to get moving on something. I HATE feeling like music is my job (very large reason I am not seriously pursuing it as a career). I'd rather let the creative juices flow out than be squeezed out. The visual stuff however, is my second favorite art, so I'm perfectly fine whoring my visual ideas out for money . Usually to get out of a music-writing slump, taking a break and listening to new music is what does it for me. You said you already tried that though. Experimenting with new sounds or effects can often spur some excitement. I can just get one kickass beat going, or a really nice string pad, or just some kind of neat hook to build a song around and that will get things moving. Zirc, I'd say maybe grab a new vsti or sample package to play around in, but you've got an IMMENSE arsenal already...maybe go back to ones you haven't fooled with much. I generally try to make every song I make pretty distinct from the previous ones. Listeners might think some are similar, but at least to me, even if they have a similar make up of styles of beats, instruments and whatnot, they all usually give me really different feelings and emotions, and they make me see different colors and shapes in my head (I sound like a hippy). I think if I tried to re-use my successful ideas to make say, an all trance album, or all bigbeat, or all ambient album, I'd be dead within 3 tracks. So maybe try something different, not necessarily by genre, but by 'attitude' if you know what I mean. Can you play guitar? Learn guitar. Maybe you can use it in your music. If not, you'll get some experience with chords and styles you may not have thought up looking at a piano roll. I might have more ideas/thoughts later. Not sure if that was helpful or not.

The Mario Paint is in there. We actually added the beginning and end parts specifically to present a reference for the original to look for in the rest of the track. It's in there. Specifically, the string hits are pretty obvious. Glad most of ya like it. I hope we were able to rox some sox with this track.

I'd go with some combination of really heavy compression, distortion, lowpass filter, and maybe reverb (in the chain actually BEFORE the compressor...makes a neat sound). That's what I think of when I think 'dark'.

seph wanted me to make some comments in here. I really don't know how much of what I know is actually generally considered correct or good, but I'll drop a few things I thought were helpful in learning what I have. I like to see visually what I'm doing to a track. I learned a lot about compression by sticking in the vst s(m)exoscope effect onto tracks as I compressed them. http://www2.kvr-vst.com/get/971.html All it does is show you live what the waveform looks like. Doing this I can see exactly how the compressor is squashing the wav. It also helped that one of my main compressors I used is the Sonitus compressor, and it has got a nice little graph on it, and a little dot that represents the db level of the wav. The dot bounces up and down the graph line so you can see exactly when and how hard the compression is acting. This is kinda weird, but when judging a final mastering mix, part of what I use is how it looks in the winamp visualization (the old winamp vis, not winamp5)..simple skin mode. I've used winamp so much to play all my mp3's, I know what a song that sounds like mine should look like and act like in that vis. I can usually tell if I've got enough bass or treble, and if its been squashed/limited enough (to my tastes). That's about all I've got. The visual feedback helps as you develop your ear to hear the subtleties of audio stuff. -

It's not because it is or isn't locked to tempo. The tempo lock is just setting the speed of the phaser to be at some sort of rhythmic division of the song tempo (did that make sense?) Anyway, as far as I know, there isn't a way to avoid the problem you described (yea its annoying). The phaser is just 'phasing' all the time. It doesn't start and stop when you start and stop the song, nor does it start at a predetermined spot when you begin a render (I think). So yeah, its pretty much a crapshoot what you will get when you render your track . -
It's probably a good choice depending on what you want it for. If you're just going to record guitar and sequence loops, it should be great. I don't think it has any midi support though, so if you were interested in using virtual instruments you could be out of luck. Other than that, if you don't know/understand what Sonar offers over what Guitar Tracks offers, chances are you don't need it (yet, at least). I think there's probably a nice discount later to upgrade your Guitar Tracks to Sonar if you wish to do that in the future, so you're not going to be wasting any money. Or you could grab Sonar Home Studio which is quite nice and quite inexpensive.

I got one of these mixers to use with a shure sm57 mic and it was all hissy, so I returned it for another one (the retailer wouldn't allow refunds after 30 days after purchase and this was a christmas present...fuck). This one is a bit better, but still shitty. I wanted it for recording acoustic guitar and I don't think the quality is acceptable. I think I'm gonna ebay it off and try and just get a straight preamp for the mic.

If you're just gonna use it for mastering, then the standalone is fine. It's cheaper too. Though, I think the standalone's limiter is single band and something else might be different too. Can't remember.

The T-Racks plugin suite lets you use each piece of it (EQ, compressor/stereo widener, multiband limiter, and clipper) as a seperate plugin if you like.

Didn't you know about those limitations when you bought cubase? Is there something special about podium's freeze method or is this just the first time you've heard of a feature that 90% of hosts have had for a while?
