  1. Yeah, when I use patterns I tend to get lazy. I'll see what I can do about bringing some variation to the drums. Maybe I'll trade off the arp to another pulse wave every once in a while to freshen that up, too.
  2. Thanks, you two! "Too chiptune," though? That's like saying you want less ice cream!
  3. Updated with both Aquatic Ambiance and Zora's Domain. Now the title is even better.
  4. First impressions are generally "WHY CAN'T I STAY ON THE TRACK?", and then it starts to click. I started with majorly traction-focused character/kart combinations, and now that I've gotten more comfortable with the techniques required to do well in 200cc, I'm back to my usual setup. After tonight, I think we'll switch back to Wednesday nights. I'm not sure why I thought we met on Thursdays. It's been a while.
  5. Alllll the way at the bottom, there's a "Mark Community Read" link. I've used it a couple times now.
  6. To join the tournament, go to "search by code" in the online tournaments menu and enter the following code: 0268-4142-9420 Default rules will be 150cc, normal items, all tracks (including DLC packs 1+2), and no teams. Schedule: May 6: Mirror Mode May 13: Default rules May 20: 200cc, mushrooms only May 27: Default rules
  7. Can calendar events be edited without moderator approval? A weekly recurring event for Mario Kart would be good, but I'm wondering if I'd be able to change the description to let people know what game rules might be in effect on different weeks.

Feel free to shoot me a message on IRC or IM or something whenever you edit. Approving the event takes like two seconds.

We'll also probably eventually set up a "Schedulers" user group for people we trust to put events on the community calendar.

Ok, sounds cool! For now, I'll try to avoid too many edits.

  8. There's a weird problem with dates in searches. The dates for the latest posts shown on the right are often completely wrong, which causes them to be sorted incorrectly (the MK8 thread was really low in these searches despite actually having very recent posts containing the search term). It changes depending on the search location, too. Both of the underlined dates refer to posts that contain the search term -- neither of which was posted by me. The search term also appears later in the thread, so neither of these were the most recent result. It seems to be grabbing the dates of random posts that contain the search term and then attributing them to the last person who posted in the thread (me, on April 25, with a post that does not contain the search term). Also, search terms are still required to have words over three letters...is that something we can fix? It's such a condescending feature. "Trust me, you won't get any useful results if you search for Wii U. You might as well search for the letter A. I'll just stop you from even trying." Overall, though, I'm digging the new digs!
  9. That was the best turnout we've had since last summer. Thanks for coming, everyone! For now, I'm setting the tournament to Thursday nights again. I've also made the tournament code a requirement for joining. I think a few people found us tonight by searching for active 200cc tournaments, and I'd like it to stay more of a community thing.
  10. ATH-M50 has been my sole pair of non-earbud headphones for 5 or 6 years now. They're on my head 95% of the time I'm sitting at the computer. I like 'em.
  11. The DLC is out! And it's good! Wild Woods is my favorite of the bunch. Great music and atmosphere, satisfying layout. We're set to do 150cc DLC tracks (egg, triforce, crossing, and bell cups) this Saturday night, 9-10 central time. Maybe next week we'll do 200cc everything. Thursday as usual? Some tips that helped me improve in 200cc: - Choosing a new character and kart combo might help, but the most important thing is to learn how to brake effectively. You can maintain a drift if you brake without letting go of the acceleration. If a corner is too tight, brake a little while drifting. No amount of handling and traction will save you as much as that technique will. You're going to need those brakes a lot on certain tracks. - Think carefully about doing tricks off jumps. It's not always wise. If you can, you might want to avoid the jump altogether. Same goes for certain shortcuts.
  12. We coordinate through a facebook group chat. If anyone wants in on it, find me on facebook (or if you're friends with someone in this thread, you can also ask them) and we'll get you added to the conversation! I'll still post information about meetups here, but it's easier to work out everyone's availability through facebook.
  13. Maverickk, wildfire, and I are able to play on Saturday night (the 25th) if that's a better date for you, Arrow. Currently revisiting time trials and watching some world record ghosts. I think all that hopping would make me go insane. Kind of reminds me of snaking on the DS. I'm just glad it's not done as much during actual races.
  14. Mare Undarum This all started when I was replaying Paper Mario 2 and suddenly had an urgent need to play around with the godlicious chippy arpeggios from the X-Naut Fortress. I wasn't sure I planned to do anything substantial, but after whipping up some chords to go along, I realized I'd accidentally given it a tone more appropriate for Mario Land 2's Star Maze. Turns out those arps can easily accommodate Star Maze, Aquatic Ambiance, and Zora's Domain without any changes except to the supporting pads and bass. Quick list of sources and where they appear in the arrangement: X-Naut Fortress (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door) - Arps used throughout, other bits used 1:10-1:37 Star Maze (Super Mario Land 2) - 0:15-0:55, backing also appears 2:18-3:25 Aquatic Ambiance (Donkey Kong Country) - 1:37-2:05 Zora's Domain (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - 2:18-2:46
  15. Check out that glide distance on Dolphin Shoals. The update comes out on the 23rd, a Thursday. Would that be a good day for people to meet up for 150cc DLC? We usually race at 9PM Central. (if not, give us an idea which days you might be available shortly after that)
  16. So, who's ready to wear out the grass with some 200cc Animal Crossing? We have less than 3 weeks to go! The higher speed seems to have opened up different opportunities for shortcuts. It's going to take some practice, that's for sure. I'm pumped that we're getting a free update that gives us good reason to revisit old tracks. We'll definitely set up a time to warm up on 150cc and then move on to 200cc another day.
  17. I've been waiting for this to come to America. It's a cute puzzle platformer from HAL Laboratory. So fun.
  18. It was posted in the WIP board. Judging by his forum activity and YouTube channel, I don't think he's planning on revisiting this.
  19. It's a mixture of two regular drumkits + tambourine and bongos. Brandon supplemented the percussion pretty well with his strumming, too.
  20. Well, people have found out that you can charge your drift boost faster in Mario Kart 8 if you hold the control stick forward at a 45-degree angle instead of strictly left or right. So that's something?
  21. I got the game in the mail. I was so excited when it finally arrived, and I started it up...only to be greeted with "this game requires an expansion pak." Noooooooooo
