  1. New version, improved vocals: http://neutronstar.org/music/undying_0.9.mp3 Still needs a bass guitar line, and the mix probably sounds like crap, as I did it at work on computer speakers with a loud environmental air system going. -steve
  2. Alrighty...these guys fell through a wormhole and haven't responded to my PM, so I did the vox myself. New version at the link in my first (EDIT: SECOND) post. -steve
  3. With EQ, you really want to cut rather than boost when possible. For guitars, cut 300-350Hz to avoid muddiness. For rock kick drums, try boosting 4K a little for more of the beater sound. For everything else, try to cut as much as you can when it doesn't adversely affect the sound. Every instrument should have a little bit of its own elbow room in the frequency space (80Hz-22KHz or so). -steve
  4. There are already about 8 threads on this issue. Yes, it's a demo. -steve
  5. Sure. Actually, if you guys want to each record one verse or so I can see what I can do with the sounds and see if it works with the song. Thanks. -steve
  6. Awesome. Here's the version with "vocals" for timing: http://neutronstar.org/music/undying_0.8.mp3 EDIT: Vocal timing is just a suggestion. If anyone comes up with something that fits better, go for it. Here's the instrumental version to practice with: http://neutronstar.org/music/undying_novox.mp3 Here are the lyrics: Enter the house / Of the ghosts of the Covenant Invoke the curse / Of the ring of stones A "family illness" / A sacrifice A prank gone wrong / A suicide "At night when I cannot sleep, I look out from my bed to the monastary out my window. "The reflections of the waters that separate us ripple across my bedroom walls, "Filling the room with waves of moonlight." Faith will not / Be your armor You'll cross the threshhold / Soon, my brother Immortal soul / In search of rest Eternal mistress / Of the shadows The dream city of forgotten souls, a sky that bleeds crimson You woke the sprits of the island, incantations and corruption "Surely there is another force working among us, one capable of pure evil "A loving god could never allow such pain and agony "Is it this force that eats at me at night and leaves my dreams unsettled?" I'll never sleep again, I'll never love again, I'll never dream again, I'll never live again I'm undying Undying Undying Undying. One thing that helped me get through the longer lines was to "sing" part of it, then do other words in the line on a different track to avoid having to breathe and keep the timing. If you do that I can stitch it all back together. If you can record the vox as dry as possible (no extra reverb, etc.) that would be great. Thanks! -steve
  7. I liked the guitar work and killer Amiga mod-like lead synth there in the middle, but I didn't like the unrealistic sounding drums (and the wide panning on them turned me off, too). Very nice arrangement. Two things that would immediately propel this into "holy shit!" land--if you can swing them--is real bass (or even pitch-transposed guitar) and better drum samples. I'm looking forward to more. -steve
  8. Here's the WIP if anyone wants to get a feel for the style. Come on, I know some of you rotten bastards do vocals. Edit: now let's try it with the correct link... http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10948 -steve
  9. http://neutronstar.org/music/undying_0.8.mp3 Done: Arrangement Needs: Bass geetar, mixing & mastering, vox that don't blow Brutal death metal vocalist urgently needed. I'm finally just about finished with this song after like 4 years, but my voice isn't up to par. Edit: after mixing all night, it looks like my quick postproduction work wasn't up to par either. I updated the URL with an older version that actually has a couple of bass frequencies in it and shit. -steve
  10. I need a collab for the Undying remix I've been working on for the past several years. My industrial distorto-vox aren't cutting it. I need some brutal grindcore vocals. Who's up for a challenge? -steve

  12. Go spend $15 on a copy of Computer Music magazine and use the dual-layer (8.5GB) DVD full of software and samples they bundle with it every month. -steve
  13. Add your own robot voices. FL Vocoder is very good. I've been playing with that fucker for hours per night since last week. -steve
  14. Completed: http://neutronstar.org/music/Steve_Pordon-Oblivion_Cursed_Earth_remix.mp3 EDIT: If anyone can think of a better name, I'm all ears. Booze makes it hard to be creative with things like that. -steve
  15. Oh look, I'm actually recording guitars again. http://neutronstar.org/music/oblivion_0.03.mp3 For the hell of it, here's the original render with Slayer2 scratchpad guitars: http://neutronstar.org/music/oblivion_0.01.mp3 To do: re-record some of the rhythm guitars to tighten them up a little and get rid of the extraneous A string notes. Production and mastering. Re-render toms with better samples than the "80s rock" shit I appear to have now. Done: Melody, arrangement. -steve
  16. Jesus, it's been so long since I worked on this. I don't think I'm going to be able to do it. The motivation just isn't there, but I would like to keep working on Innocent Water. Recording the guitar is the biggest problem for me right now, but I'll bring my gear into work if I have to. -steve

"n" means downstroke, "v" means upstroke. The "()" is because he does a slide with his left hand there and doesn't hit the strings with his pick hand, at least not in the part I looked at. -steve
  18. There are backing tracks all over usenet. Check alt.binaries.guitar.tab. -steve
  19. I'm kind of surprised no one really answered your question about string tension correctly. Lighter-gauge strings can help somewhat, but if you're looking to buy a guitar, you might as well try out the ones with a shorter neck scale. Ask the salesman. A shorter neck translates directly into less string tension (and a sound that isn't quite as "bright" and squealy). A good neck will also let you drop the height of your strings more at the bridge without buzzing on the frets. I'd been playing the same RG-560 (all other electrics I've picked up in the meantime felt like clunky shit in comparison) for around 15 years before I got around to dropping the strings, at which point I started playing literally twice as fast. Do yourself a favor and look into it. Edit: Stanley Jordan has some awesome tips for getting low tension with thick strings. Take a look at his website. You'll have to google it. -steve
  20. The cheapest way is to use something you already have. For instance, that old tape recorder sitting in the garage or the built-in mic on your computer. -steve
  21. Also, fadeouts on multiple tracks are way easier to keep track of in an editor as opposed to automating several different knobs in FL. When I fade a section I generally don't fade everything at once, but individual tracks at slightly different times for a more organic and realistic feel (i.e., if you physically move away from a drumkit being played, the hats will fade first, followed by cymbals, snare, toms, and finally the kick due to basic acoustic physics). -steve
  22. Out of curiosity, do you know if these presets will also work with the free version of ZebraCM that came with next month's Computer Music mag? Holy shit, I'm hearing the Final Countdown patch right now...never mind, money's too good for you. -steve
  23. Well played, sir. If I had to take a wild and unsubstantiated guess as to why this might work, I'd guess that FL rewrites headers for some reason when it makes a zip package. I'd encourage you to post this info in the other thread too, since it's stickied (or I can copy and paste what you wrote into the first post there if you like). EDIT: I see you already did. I linked your info in the first post so people can try it first before spending two hours on my method. -steve
  24. Agreed on NSKit7. Best free kit hands down. On the other hand, I've found BFD to be far better than DFH at making drum lines sound real, at least in VST form (sequenced through FL Studio). -steve
