OCR01552 - Chrono Cross "Dreaming Still"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm the complete opposite. I loved the way this burst onto the scene, like a brief explosion of magical stardust candy. That's really the only way I can describe it. Very unique for an otherwise very chill mix. I'm listening to this on my laptop speakers, so perhaps I'm missing some of the acoustic range, but the drum work seems fine to me. No complaints at all on this piece. Once again, Jill both astounds and soothes with her calming voice. A light and airy appetizer for sweet dreams. -

That true, but I think the learning curve for 3S is particularly steep and the gap between a scrub and the average dedicated 3S player is quite large. In SSF2T the normal attacks are powerful enough such that a scrub could get lucky and defeat an average player. Same goes with the button mashing that is rampant at the lower levels of MvC2 play. But with 3S, you have experienced players deliberately standing there and doing nothing but parrying all the telegraphed scrub moves, supers included, and then laying down the hurt for a KO. It is humiliating to see your opponent flash blue for half of the match and negate everything you just threw at him. At least in MvC2 there is enough simultaneous craziness going on that the scrub thinks he is doing something and that he was "this close" to beating the other guy. The only other SF game I see as having a steeper learning curve than 3S is CvS2, with its rolling, dodges, and J-Def in addition to parrying, plus the always humiliating custom combos. -

I think it's too deep for the casual player and especially the first time player. The scrub tries to get lucky with button mashing, is occasionally able to bust out a super, is happy he is doing chip damage, but then starts to get a brutal beatdown by an experienced player. Scrub then holds down back, or worse, just back, and then is barraged by a stream of lows, overheads, and throws. KO. Repeat several more times, and he's out $2.00 and his ego is smashed. Anteater power. -

I would love to see an SF4, but I just don't see it happening. The last SF game that Capcom actually tried to do a good job on was CvS2. I've never played them, but the consensus among hardcore SF fans seems to be that SVC Chaos and Capcom Fighting Evolution both sucked. In addition, the arcade scene has been in decline for over a decade and the trend likely will not change. The capital Capcom needs to invest in order to develop a completely new game -- in particular, drawing characters from scratch rather than rehash old sprites -- probably won't be justified given the diminished arcade marketplace, especially after the commercial failures of SVC:C and CFE. SF has always been about the game play. Depending on your playing style, it's a selection among SSF2T, SFA3, MvC2, or SF3:3S as the greatest SF game of all time. Personally, I consider 3S to be the pinnacle of fighting game perfection and I don't think it will ever be dethroned. Capcom will have a very daunting job of following up on any of these series. -
OCR01542 - Super Mario World "Koopa vs. Kefka"

I'm a sucker for dark and somber music and this mix is definitely it. Absolutely loved the segue into Dancing Mad. The crazy-notes-arpeggio-finger-rolling parts could be tightened up a bit in a few minor places, but otherwise a very awesome piece. -
OCR01546 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "The Delay"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The right words aren't coming to my mouth, but I get a sense that this mix meanders a bit. Don't really get a feel for the music going in any particular direction, even for a laid back piece. The music kind of seeps in and then fades out before you really notice it's there. But I will say that the melding of the 2 melodies was quite impressive. And of course, it's a very chill track, so that's always a plus. Could have been more cohesive in my opinion, but still recommended and a great mix to relax to. -
Most remixes are still from the classics. Take a look at the homepage. Even so, you don't have to play anything to appreciate good music.

I wasn't too fond of the symphony hits at 1:31, too sharp and jarring, especially with the abrupt pauses. But everything else is liquid cool. Very slick synth work at 0:41. Recommended.

This mix isn't getting enough love. This kicks ass. The string attacks? Awesome. Drumwork? Killer. Scratches and voice sampling? Both great. And with the melodic piano work, this enters the pantheon of great OCRemixes in my opinion. Reminds me a lot of Malcos' Collision which I also love. A triumphant return by Ziwtra. Keep it up.

OCR01532 - Seiken Densetsu 3 "At First Innocence"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The guitar tuning issues really hit me hard the first couple of listens. Then I decided to space out a little, to do some work on the side while it ran in the background and not actively scrutinize each musical component. The song instantly became a lot better. Although the intonation still hits me at a weird angle from time to time, the reverb helps out stylistically and now I tend to interpret it as giving the song an East Asian flavor. Visual images come to mind of a crumbling civilization nestled away in the depths of a hidden forest. Would I appreciate a remastered version with the guitars retuned? Sure. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy this piece any less than I do. Another awesome result, keep it up zyko. -

Stole the words right out of my mouth. I had the biggest shit-eating grin the second this baby started rolling. -

OCR01506 - Double Dragon II "Twin Blood"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I prefer this version. I find there are very few metal songs which can seamlessly blend the electric guitar with synths, and the old version just didn't hit the right balance IMO. Call me old fashioned and narrow minded, but I like the classic rock flavor of this new version more. I especially appreciated the revamped solos. The one that starts at 2:12 and has a smidge of spanish fly -- awesome stuff. Not that the old version's solos weren't up to snuff. On the contrary, it's got some wicked stuff in there. I'm keeping both. Btw, for those of you that don't know, you can download the old version off Sixto's website. -
OCR01463 - Grandia II "A Deus ex Harpa (Second Seal Mix)"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've had this for a while but I'm only commenting now. I like this. Not just because it's pleasing to the ear, which it is. But also because it accomplishes something that, in my mind, many melodious songs fail to do -- not be campy. When you start with a source tune like A Deus, you typically run into two types of dangers: 1) making something already laid back even more laid back and thus boring, or 2) try to add elements to spice things up and end up going overboard with the bright instrumentation and harmonies For some people this is fine and I'm not knocking it. But for me there has to be a delicate balance. And this song does exactly that. A beautiful rendition of the source tune using angelic instrumentation choice and chords, underpinned by a subtle drumline that ebbs and flows with the melody. Only the section at 3:34 with the cymbals (?) hits me as slightly overbearing. Great stuff, great job by DS. -
OCR01490 - Awesome "Game Over (Cheeze Mix)"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
As a whole, I really can't get into this song. But the synth solo at 2:10 is fucking hot. Edit: After listening to this 30 or so times, I have to say that my original opinion was wrong. It took me forever to ease into this piece, as the beginning section up until the synth solo reminds me too much of the theme from that Unsolved Mysteries TV show which freaked the shit out of me when I was a kid. Anyway, upon further inspection, Liontamer was right in applauding the arrangement and composition of this remix. It's simply spectacular. The buildup to the synth solo is magnificent. And of course, the solo still kicks hefty ass. -
OCR01486 - Mega Man 6 "Fortress of the Knight"

I've come to appreciate Vurez's distinct Greek-spaghetti-western style, if you pardon my atrocity of a label. But at the same time, I felt it was getting a little stale, that he wasn't trying to grow anymore. I saw this mix and thought to myself "Hmm, another MM6 mix from Vurez. I bet I know what this is going to sound like." I was WRONG. This mix totally caught me off guard. Nice additions of electric guitar and symphony hits. I don't know what else to say. This is your best work to date, Vurez, keep it up. -
OCR01482 - Metal Slug 2 "No Need to Reload"

Same here. I'm obviously no judge, but I'm a big fan of his Pokemon and GoldenEye remixes. To each his own, I suppose. -
OCR01481 - Raptor & Final Fantasy VII "PlectraSubCity"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I still remember Raptor's soundtrack. A beautiful compilation of tunes covering a wide range of emotions. This mix definitely captures the feeling of the level*, but I had a hard time filtering out the source tune. It just doesn't have that Raptor flavor to it. But this remix still rocks. Very new agey, laid back, smooth. Another awesome piece from TO. Edit: This song has been playing nonstop for over an hour, and I'm not even remotely tired of it. Edit 2: 2 hours and still going strong. *Even though the source is listed as Level1.mid, this is definitely not the tune for the first level of the first sector, Bravo Sector. Bravo Level 1 is a chiptune tour-de-force that screams for a prog rock makeover. Perhaps this is Tango 1, but I don't have the game in front of me at the moment, and my memory does have its limits. -

OCR01169 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Collision"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This song always sneaks up on me. I love this remix to death, but somehow I always forget about it. So when the ominous strings attack right off the bat at the beginning, it's HOLY SHIT all over again. This is a rare fusion of a tight melodic line with relentless machine-driven beats. Awesome stuff, and highly recommended. -
OCR01464 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon "Time's Anxiety"
MrBogus replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Besides being a spectacular remix, this is especially interesting in that I really cannot pick out neither GL's nor Rexy's particular trademark styles in this piece. I can usually recognize either artist just by hearing a few seconds of any of their given songs. This time around, their talents mesh so well that it seems it was a fusion of two minds into one. Very well done. Superb production values, a fresh new take on Clockwork, and it's quite catchy to boot. Something I could easily chill out to. -
A question or two from an outsider: Do you guys consider yourself addicted to WoW? Regardless of your answer to the previous question, how many hours do you spend per day/week on WoW?

OCR01459 - Guardian Legend "The Scarlet Halls of Night"

If I'm hearing this correctly, this is the same source tune used in Wingless's other mix, Rosethorne. This mix eschews the acoustic guitar in favor of a silky smooth piano, and Wingless buries the theme behind different layers this time, but the effect is the same -- a very chill mix. Keep up the great work.
