  1. Incredible all around. Faithful to the source material but not afraid to venture into improv territory and sweet rhythm mixups. Sick crunchy guitars and badass solos. There is nothing not to like about this epic metal opera. (Edit: Another Soundscape is correct, the ending could have been done better. But I loop the song on 10x repeat, so I don't notice unless I'm really paying attention.) If you enjoyed listening to this remix, I highly highly recommend also checking out his interpretation of Final Fantasy X's boss theme - Tag Team Back Again. 1st place finish for March's Dwelling of Duels.
  2. If I try to connect this song to the source material, I get annoyed. But taken as a standalone creation, this is freakin chill. You can add my vote for smoothest guitar chord riffing ever.
  3. As your run of the mill average PC user, I find Vista to be neither revolutionary nor as bad as some people make it out to be. Yes, Aero is a memory hog, but if you're buying a new computer, anything less than a dual-core processor and 2 gb of ram is not reasonable in the first place. 2 gb will handle Aero with ease. And if you need more, memory is ridiculously cheap these days. I bought my PC from Dell a month ago for a very reasonable price. I didn't want to deal with the hassle and headaches of building a PC from scratch. There was a bunch of junk software pre-installed, so I reformatted and reinstalled Vista the day after I opened the box. Now it's clean as a whistle and runs as smooth as silk. There are compatibility issues with older programs, particularly 3D games, I'm guessing in connection with DirectX. I tested the trial version of Far Cry 1 and the game's graphics were messed up to the point of unplayability. Starcraft, emulators, and I'm guessing 2D programs in general work just fine. No noticeable bugs so far aside from 2 freeze ups which I couldn't tell was due to Vista or a program lockup. So yeah, for someone like me who only uses the PC for web browsing, music, Excel / office programs, and 2D games, Vista feels like a fresh change. People who love their older programs should be wary. But think of it this way -- are you going to be using XP forever? You will have to upgrade at some point, and Vista is not so horrible that you risk being the early adopter guinea pig.
  4. The first minute of Spittin' Narcissism was playing on my winamp randomizer (with a 1200+ song playlist) when I clicked on this thread. Huh.
  5. Yeah, I forgot to mention this was for the single player story mode only. No multiplayer FPS I know of has cutscenes.
  6. I think the ultimate zombie FPS would hinge largely on cinematography. - The problem with using an FPS engine as applied here is that the graphics are too sharp, the edges of polygons too crisp. Things need to look grainier and a bit blurry, like you are in a really bad dream. - Also, during zombie chases when you are running away, the camera needs to start shaking like crazy and the picture needs to have multiple quick cutaways to the zombies chasing you. I am totally serious about this. If you have seen 28 Weeks Later, the first scene when the useless coward of a dad is running for his life away from that isolated shed -- that is what I'm talking about. This style needs to be translated into videogame format, but only during select chase scenes so it doesn't get overused. - I am tired of the robotically smooth glide known as the walk/run. If you are running for your life, you are not traveling like your legs are tank tracks. You will be stumbling, tripping, looking back, slowing down, speeding up, etc. You are a human. None of this Terminator bullshit for a zombie FPS. - Zombies don't carry guns or anything of the sort, but they run fast and outnumber you. For a zombie FPS, it is imperative that your lifebar represents what it would be like in a zombie movie. That is, if you get caught, you are dead or nearly dead. If you get surrounded by say 5 zombies, even a shotgun wouldn't do you much good. The emphasis on running is what makes the Resident Evil series (except 4) so great. Too many zombies, not enough ammo or life. Running was the only option. As for my own crazy new genre, I'd like to see Street Fighter 3 meets Final Fight.
  7. Great ambiance and beatwork slay me every time. Fantastic work guys. Sorry to hear ambient might be gone for a while.
  8. There have only been a handful of good comic book based movies: Superman I & II (Reeves) Batman (1989 Burton, the best) and Batman Begins (I think it's overrated, but still good) Spiderman 2 -- I hate 1 but many critics and fans like it, 3 is merely ok Forget about the rest. After the bullshit that is the X-Men series, Daredevil / Elektra, Fantastic 4 / Silver Surfer, I've decided to watch every superhero movie with abysmal expectations and the faint hope that it might actually be decent.
  9. Thanks for clearing this up, LT. This thread had been on my mind's back burner for years, and now I can emphatically say this remix rightly deserves its kudos. This is a beautiful piece. Angelic guitar tone, well constructed chords, beautiful melody, and perfect percussions.
  10. Love the beat work. Relentless and the driving force behind this mix. Subtle enough to be paired with the soothing synths at 0:47, yet powerful enough to back up the rougher sounds at 1:43 and 3:05. Add in what I call the "fairy bells" to carry the melody and you've got yourself one sinister Doom mix.
  11. A spectacular rock-out from 0:00 to 3:10. I noticed a particular lack of the wah-wah pedal relative to some of goat's other songs, which creates a smoother guitar tone, but in no way less wicked. Loved the machine gun licks especially prominent at the end. Fantastic song. Rock on goat.
  12. All the instruments are vibrant, yet balanced so that none of them steals the show. I loved the string tremolos in the background, very nice touch. Excellent work, keep it up DS.
  13. I was hoping for a blurb about China suing over copyright infringement, but sadly I was denied my daily dose of irony.
  14. I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm wondering why Konami even bothered to redub the entire voice script in the first place. The original version sounded fine, in some places even better than the redub.
  15. Gah, damn frickin' overactive corporate firewall settings. My browser doesn't show an actual button, just a black void that changes my mouse cursor when I hover over it.
  16. I heard their awesome Ghostbusters cover a while back, and just tonight I stumbled upon their MySpace page, where I was graced with the holy divinity that is their Eye of the Tiger cover. This song is enough for me to crack open my wallet. So how do I actually buy their album? There are no links that I could find. I don't have a MySpace account and refuse to get one. Is there any way to get a hold of this CD? They sure make this harder than it should be.
  17. The pixel redraws are nice, but I'm wonder if they're going to add additional frames as well. If they make this as smooth as SF3 and tweak the hit detection, I'm sold.
  18. Holy shit the upcoming song from that Youtube link is fucking horrible. James still sounds like crap and Kirk's solo is completely devoid of melody or creativity. What the hell happened to the kickass solos from MoP and Justice? Where are the memorable melodies from the black album? This isn't even music anymore, it's 4 guys playing horribly loudly.
  19. Ah, that helps. Actually quite catchy. I not pumped as hell, but it's a very nice tune. Anyway, this is a midi rip from VGMusic.com. I don't think they allow direct linking (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/computer/miscellaneous/msx/Solid.mid) so if that doesn't work, search under MSX Computer --> Classic Style A-Z --> Metal Gear 2 --> Solid Snake. Nice find Siamey. Very remix worthy. Hell, even with soundfonts installed (which I don't have at the moment) I'm sure this will sound superb.
  20. I wouldn't say the album is horrible. I like most of it, especially No Leaf Clover. But the covers of their classic songs just doesn't do them justice. The raw energy from the studio albums was missing, even with the throngs of fans singing along. And down tuning all the guitars a half step just made everything sound odd, even if it was done for practical reasons. Not bad, but certainly not up to par. I haven't given Megadeth its fair share of my listening attention, so I won't comment. As for Metallica, my favorite albums are MoP, Justice, and the black album -- yes, it is completely different and isn't thrash, but is still loaded with quality tracks. St. Anger is almost completely unlistenable. Some Kind of Monster has a kickass start and is decent overall, but drags on for way too long and the chorus sung by James ("we the people") is horrendous. Forget about the rest of the album. I did my Metallica binge only 2 years ago, so I didn't have the privilege (or burden) of seeing the group fall from their former glory. I have no expectations for their next album. If it's great, awesome. If not, I don't give a shit, I still have their classics.
  21. I think I've found a solution to my picky string preferences -- http://www.daddario.com/DADProdDetail.aspx?CodaID=564&ID=1&Class=AACA D'Addario 1/2 rounds - Extra Super Lights. Pretty similar in tension to my existing low-tension classical strings. http://www.daddario.com/DADProdDetail.aspx?CodaID=601&ID=4&Class=ADSA D'Addario Pro-Arte - Normal Tension Plus, the 1/2 rounds are grounded and buffed to allow for smooth sliding and minimal finger noise. I can deal with the difference in thickness. The Roland Micro Cube looks pretty sweet. Of course I'll have to test it out for myself, but if this thing is half as good as the user reviews say, I'm sold. I'm going to hold off on recording gear for the moment, especially since my computer is crap, but I will definitely keep your advice in mind, SnappleMan, thanks. As for the guitar, I'll have to stop by Guitar Center again in the next few weeks. I was too hung up about string tension and playability and didn't pay enough attention to guitar tone and functionality the first time I was there, although I could barely hear myself with everyone else around me playing at max volume. (I also noticed that the amp determined sound quality and timbre more than the actual guitar itself -- any opinions on this?) Time to give the Ibanez RGs, Fender Double Strats, Jacksons, Carvins, ESPs, and the other recommendations a good wanking. Thanks for all the great advice everyone, much appreciated. Are Gibsons total shit, or just overpriced? Being a n00b to the electric world, I always thought the Gibson Les Pauls were supposed to be legendary.
  22. I've been noodling with a classical guitar for the past 2 years or so and am looking to finally purchase my first electric and amp. I love the low tension and thickness characteristic of strings on the classical guitar. It makes playing a breeze. I'm wondering if this is possible on the electric. All the electrics I've sampled so far had high tension, very thin strings. I simply do not like it. Will low tension strings work with the pickups? Do they make electric strings with thicker gauges? For reference, my classical strings (silverplated wound for E-A-D and nylon for G-B-E) range from 0.711-1.090 mm or 0.028-0.043 in. Also, any recommendations for a guitar and amp combination in the $750-$1000 total range? I want to learn all the genres out there -- metal shredding, blues, flamenco (on my classical), alternative, funk, rock, everything. Any guitars that are easier to play than others and suitable for a variety of genres? Any amps out there that are reasonably priced and offer a good selection of sound effects?
  23. I am drooling like a retard and giggling like a schoolgirl. Holy shit this is awesome.
