  1. No thanks to him? You should learn from him. My ex's dad was the exact same way. I miss his knowledge the most.
  2. I think what you'll need to do is Normalize it in Audacity, and then amplify the whole track as much as it will let you while disallowing clipping.
  3. Someone wants us to think he's rich.
  4. I want a Sonic Spinball sequel. Sonic Pinball Party doesn't count.
  5. I hadn't read anything regarding his passing. The last project with a dedication was for someone specifically because he wasn't dead, so pardon me for assuming.
  6. I would recommend that you coordinate a project in this forum for a game he likes. Make sure that you are a part of that project too, so that it doesn't end up sounding like an age-old favor that you want the whole site to do for you. Tell Avien that I fucking love Noumenon.
  7. Who the hell is your instructor? You may be thinking of the Dorian mode, which is different from natural minor. You must understand that the musical mode is strictly based on the intervals between each note, not which note it starts on. It would be good for you to just play around on the scales of each mode. Before I took a music theory class, I knew I always loved that cliché egypt/middle-east music you have in video games. Then I saw harmonic minor and I shat bricks. Then I saw phrygian and shat more brix. Then I saw locrian and there were no more brix, so my colon fell out. Listen to Sprout Tower from Pokémon Crystal. It has kind of an uneasy feel, mixed with a little bit of eastern/exotic/mysterious/I can't explain it. That's Locrian for you- the mode that everybody hates. The whole game, especially Ecruteak, felt to me like I was in a totally foreign land because the two towers make heavy use of Phrygian. Then the Sprout Tower is in Locrian, which is just phrygian with a flatted five. The flatted five means not only is there no Perfect Fifth interval in the scale, that 5 becomes a diminished 5th and all of the Orthodox Christians will run to their holy water. On top of that, the 1 triad is diminished. So, when the music moves to the tonic, you still get very little closure. It's really the perfect mode to use for loops. I think that was all totally irrelevant to your specified moods, but maybe someone can get something out of it. edit: here's some irony. For a scary-sounding piece, consider having absolutely no functional harmony. Cauldron Keep for example: Diminished and augmented chords out the ass, although it does move on to a minor-sounding melody. I think what Grant does here is use real (as opposed to tonal) transpositions of some of those minor motives, and since he keeps going up and up, it gets more and more uneasy and tense. Go to the top of the tower as Kazooie and just glide around while listening to the music. Utterly epic. Grant Kirkhope. (that conjecture happened in about 5 minutes from simply listening to the song, with little study of the actual notes.. please do speak up if anyone feels otherwise.) ANOTHER EDIT: play around with a whole-tone scale too. C to C(8va) and then back down, with whole-step intervals only. Try it.
  8. You should have bought a large shirt that doesn't fit rather than a medium shirt that doesn't fit.
  9. I'm gonna take the cautious route and refer to everyone as a woman. As far as Coop goes, don't give her a hard time.
  10. Thanks for letting me know. I'll have to go get it. We had a secret santa at work, but since they suck at communication, I missed the actual gift exchange. I'll be giving my immigrant co-worker a teach yourself english book, since he's too stubborn to take classes I have yet to see what I'll get. I also got a case of this from my mom.
  11. Pretty sure I'm talking about The Black Tower. It's the one that's under construction in the past. I haven't played it in so long, I thought that was the only building related to Ambi. Don't worry about rushing to finish it; I don't mind waiting for you to work at your leisure. This one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wq5mTW-46k I'm glad we both love the Skull Dungeon theme. I'm sure that will turn out great.
  12. Is BiPolar Bird still up for critique? I feel that the strings that come in around 0:28 should flow into the next note, rather than being staccato. The strings have a breif fade-in, then a breif fade-out, and then the next note does the same. It feels hard on my ears, and it kinda reminds me of compression issues (although I can tell it's not). I love the section with the sitar. I'm not personally fond of in-game samples. However, I do like the idea of using the enemy-death effect. It feels like percussion. The other ones feel out of place to me. The low-health warning was alright too. Perhaps you could edit it so that you can use it like accompaniment.. maybe a short riff could play behind the rest of the instruments.. crawl up the scale for whichever key you're in or something. Upon hearing this, I can tell that this is going to be a great project. When it comes out, I will definitely ask you for lossless copies of my favorites. I'm still looking forward to Ambi's Tower. If you don't feel like I'm stepping on your toes by critiquing without actually being a remixer, I'd be more than happy to provide my opinion on others.
  13. No, I'm well aware of that much. It was in the first post. The more recent posts are suggesting that there was an actual turnout. Was there a tourney? So then you understand why I'm not clear on the more recent news.
  14. I'm thoroughly confused. In their parody rap video, Screw Attack said he played a "hack" ? I'm not sure what's going on. Can someone direct me to a link with the turnout?
  15. I've heard of both, but I haven't listened to a whole lot of it. Of the Suicide Commando that I've listened to, it appears to be hit or miss for me. VNV Nation is about the same from what I've heard. I listen to more Tactical Sekt, Aslan Faction, Psyclon Nine, Life Cried, and Dawn of Ashes because generally I like everything I hear. The genre is called Dark EBM, Dark Electro, Hellektro, Aggrotech, and probably others. Imply darkness and electronica, and it's probably going to fit. Here's what I'm listening to now. It probably fits both with those genres and with this thread. The Brawl version has less boom. Makes me sad.
  16. "dude you almost stepped on the console wtf" -"woops my bad" "hold up, pause the game" *pauses* "here, turn it the other way so nobody will step on it." "k, go." *unpauses* Doesn't sound familiar? :\
  17. I've heard Ratatat - Lex. Yes, that one is obscure; it's not up for discussion. The rest of their stuff, I don't know. Darkesword's Heat Vision is pretty different, too. Lounge style, with phrygian segments, and choir aah's. It's a good evening track. Also, halloween music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCDd7V8yIv0
  18. My music taste doesn't really align with many others. I could probably post half of all the music I listen to and it would all be fitting.
  19. I agree with all of your critiques. That said, I really, really, really like where the melody is going to go in the future. Please continue working on this and bring it up to OCR quality. (edit 3: So here, I'm trying to explain the music theory in simple terms so your head doesn't explode from all the info at once like you'll get on Wikipedia..) If you want to change the melody up, study the key that it's in (Rozovian mentioned this), and just crawl up and down that scale and use those notes. You'll say to yourself "Shit dude that sounds pretty good!", and occasionally you'll say "Okay, that combination doesn't work so well." I'm going to edit this post and figure out what key the source is in. edit: Okay, it's in the Spanish-Phrygian mode in the key of G. That's G, Ab, Bb, C, D, Eb, F#, G. Play those notes in succession, you'll see that it sounds similar to the source tune. You'll also notice that all of the notes in the source fall within this scale. So crawl up and down those notes, and be sure to really milk that augmented interval between Eb and F#, and resolve to G often. It's in the key of G, so in this case G is called the tonic. When you play towards the tonic, your piece will feel powerful and/or sufficiently ended. That augmented interval is what makes it sound eastern, along with the half-step between G and Ab. It's amazing how subtle differences in the scale can create such a vastly different mood. Use all of these as guidelines. Feel free to move to a different scale, or vary this scale however much you want. You use the technical stuff as a guideline, and you use your ear to judge. edit 2: yeah I realize I haven't ever submitted a mix here. At this point, after completing my first music theory class, it's just a matter of money and good software before I really try my hand at it.
  20. All the time, mang. I'm always hassling him about sending me lossless copies of his indie stuff.
  21. I agree with the notion against digging this album, etc. However, I think it would be really neat if, in maybe a year's time, someone spilled the beans. And then the whole internet shits bricks. "They did what??" And it would spark the same excitement that we're feeling today.
  22. Based on your desires and your budget, you're building them yourself.
  23. Obscure is a very subjective word.. I can see people just posting their favorite stuff in here again. "No, I swear, this isn't like normal hip hop, this guy is more g than any of those other posers" That said, I'll post a track that a friend of mine made. Although it doesn't feel too different to me since I listen to similar stuff all the time, I think the majority here will find that it isn't what one would call normal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkMNUnkuHIY
  24. Sounds like you just want free shit from composers. At the same time, it would be a great opportunity for aspiring composers building a portfolio.
