diy & experimental electronic music
Arcana replied to analoq's topic in Music Composition & Production
Would *I* personally go into grad school for that? Well, at this point it's too late for me, I'm in graduate school for something else (human factors and communicatino in software engineering, specifically). But it is possible for someone to go into graduate school in human-computer interaction, yes. A lot of it is basic elements such as testing new styles and paradigms of UIs for computers (maybe new "styles" of certain applications we all use), but more radical branches deal with different hardware peripherals and their usefuless (ex: interfaces that support two mice, chord keyboarding, information visualizations). I don't know who the "big names" are but I know of some research done by William Cohen (University of Waterloo) and Peggy Storey (University of Victoria) that deals with HCI issues. George Tzanetakis (the guy doing the music stuff) might be involved in that as well from the music playing and production standpoint (one of his postdocs programmed a WACOM tablet to play back samples, for example). -
Print isn't dead, but it's dying. This EGM closure is sad but not surprising. When newspapers that have been around for over one-hundred years shut their doors, it's inevitable that magazines are going to follow. Despite the vast electronic era, a lot of people are nostalgic - but magazines also have presence and a utility that you can't really beat with an electronic equivalent. You are on the bus, or waiting for a plane? Head to the magazine shop and grab a magazine. You bored at lunch? Take your magazine with you upstairs - you sure as hell aren't going to drag your laptop with you to read some online sources. It's also overall, more economical to get magazines than it would be to buy a PDA and then stock it with paid articles.

He works on the floor above me, so if there's any specific questions or research you're interested in I can get you connected. I wish I took his music information retrieval course but I finished all of my courses by the time he got around to offering it again. You do some interesting work Analoq, I'm starting to pass along the vids to my friends. I personally have an interest in HCI (human-computer interaction) but no experience with performing music - it's cool to see people using these kinds of devices to "play music better" so to speak. -
GrayLightning, I miss that guy.

I don't know if this is interesting at all, but a professor at my University works on a lot of music technology and music information retrieval. There's a bit of a synthesis and audio analysis project that he's worked on that apparently helps support the creation of synths as well. http://marsyas.sness.net/about/overview I don't know much about this overall but if you're touching on programming your own synths there might be something interesting here for you guys. -
I might take a shot at it, but don't put me down unless I send you a WIP. My skills are really really rusty.

Dissenting opinions such as this, and then watching the wave of pseudo-PPR style debate go on in Unmod was part of what was so amusing about the forum. The autistic genius was just a bonus.

Looking for some good OC ReMixes with cool Vocals.

Did someone claim the China track already, Kyle? It was removed from the Download directory.

OC ReMix music played at Google's GDC afterparty
Arcana replied to BogusRed's topic in General Discussion
It's kind of neat where you'll hear OCR music played nowadays. I heard a few OCR songs played in the Nintendo Store in NYC actually, and asked the salespeople what song it was. While the person didn't know what the song was he directed me to OCR. Nice to know where the community pops up! -
I'm going to try to get in on this. Unfortunately the machine I have isn't quite set up for audio stuff since I haven't touched it since I left OCR... so yeah! also, @Rama or @Starla, you might want to consider putting the IRC channel on the actual OHC thaSauce page, it took me a while to find it because I checked there first instead of here Later!

I've plugged a chord straight from the DS into my line in on my Mac Pro, it works fine. All of the inputs on a MacBook are Line In inputs (not mic inputs). Audacity does a good job of recording and you can add necessary effects (ex: gain if it's not loud enough).

Damn this site used to have all sorts of hijinks on it. OCR Unmod was like a rare collection of artistic genius.

World of Warcraft Guild for the Arrangement Community
Arcana replied to starla's topic in General Discussion
Yor UI looks rather similar to mine. I have many more buttons in a different place as well as more compact unit frames but otherwise it's pretty similar. I haven't screened my UI in raid for a while now so maybe I'll do that if I get into raid tonight. -
It's gotten me interested in making music again, that's for sure. I play around on it for half an hour a day on the bus, which is better than not practicing at all.

I hate it when people claim addons are a crutch. -
Did a search, didn't show up. Mods can feel free to delete this thread.

World of Warcraft Guild for the Arrangement Community
Arcana replied to starla's topic in General Discussion
Frak me, I should have known that there was a WoW guild for OCR stuff. I play WoW altogether way too often but all of my characters are on different servers. I have a bunch of characters Alliance-side, and a handful of Horde-side characters on Mug'thol. Maybe I'll roll on Illidan, drop by and say hi. With regards to Addons, I use Pitbull, Grid for raid healing. -
I'm surprised that there's been no mention of the Korg DS-10 on the Remixing forum (maybe it appears on other areas of the web site). Have you guys heard about it? I bought it and am playing around with it now. For a rundown on what it is, it's probably easiest to just show you a few demo videos: and also: and...

Buying Music Software in Canada (mail order)
Arcana posted a topic in Music Composition & Production
I'm thinking of upgrading my old Reason 3 version up to 4 but no retail stores sell it, and I don't like buying from the US as things get caught up in customs (as well as many places simply refusing to ship over border). Anyone know a good Canadian online retailer that'll sell the Reason 4 upgrade? -
OCRA-0013 - Tales: Summoning of Spirits

Hey all, I remember back in the day when this project was still in its inception stages. Great to see that it's been completed with all of the toppings. Congratulations! -
Reason 4 sucks, an unbiased review.
Arcana replied to Siamey's topic in Music Composition & Production
I started with Reason 2.5 and haven't ever really made substantial music with it (but I think that's due to limits of my creativity rather than any problem with the software at the moment). I'm debating if making the shift to Reason 4 is worth it... this thread seems to have a lot more people trashing it than praising it. -
I've heard that there are a lot of changes being made to tanking that (for example) obsolete Blessing of Salvation in its current form. For example, tanks will do more damage and will receive more base threat multipliers by default. Esesntially, they're changing it so that you won't even NEED BoS (hence the modification to changing it into Hand of Salvation as a situational buff). Among other things, the integration of spell hit and melee hit, and spell crit and melee crit will make hybrids more feasable. It seems that they're expecting that Ret paladins (for example) are going to be doing some healing as well, and due to the new itemization, not be terrible at it either.

Recording on Mac: recording with soft mixer?
Arcana posted a topic in Music Composition & Production
So I'm wondering guys... If I want to record a digital sound from my Mac, onto a file on the same computer, how would I go about doing this? Perhaps a soft mixer of some kind, where I can redirect all output from an Application into the input of another sound application? I would like to do some sound ripping (and also some redirecting from iTunes to Ventrilo) but I'm not quite getting this to work right. I tried Jack for Mac OS X but it doesn't seem to work all the time. Anyone try this? -
Yeah, I think the healing changes for Holy Paladins are pretty interesting. Instant-cast Holy Lights after HS crits, and I rather like the AoE heal idea. Seems that they're also trying to convince Holy Paladins to melee and judge more often, though I don't know how well that'll work in practice. Seems only useful in raiding, with Crusader strike able to refresh judgements. Very PVE oriented changes.
