OCR TF2: Stab stab stab!

So amusingly, today marks the 4th anniversary of the OCR server being around to the day! There has been lots of ups and downs over the past few years, hopefully we can put it back on the up :)

Edit: As for trolls, just be a hardass with them. If they're giving that much trouble, then they're not worth keeping on the server. I'll craft a new motd sometime soon - what rules should I put? I definitely want to insert a clause about acting in good faith & being considerate.

Edit #2: In particular, what about micspamming?

Micspamming should remain at server discretion. If the group wants it, fine, if they are polite and ask nicely to turn it off, then the spammer is obligated to turn it off. Another thing to point out, is if the new server uses the new(ish) mic codec, then Micspam is impossible anyway. The dont be a douchebag rule should be worded "Respect your fellow players." Saying the whole douchebag line kinda falls under unprofessional in my book.

This works for me.

How's this for the motd?

Welcome to the OverClocked ReMix TF2 server!

In general, please observe these two basic tenets while here:

1) Be courteous & considerate of others

2) Act in good faith towards other players & the admins

Hope you enjoy your time here!

2) Act in good faith towards other players & the admins

And this additional rule:

If the MotD is going to list rules, put a note in on the MotD claiming that moderators and admins alike reserve the right to take action regardless of listed rules if they believe it to be in the best interest of the community.

I remember from past experiences, if you don't state that staff reserves the right to take action against unlisted rules--there will be nuisances that will argue their way to no end, claiming the staff was unjustified, or try to weasel their way around rules.

Also, some rules regarding offensive language should be in order

Here's proposition #4

Welcome to the OverClocked ReMix TF2 server!

In general, please observe these two basic tenets while here:

1) Be courteous & considerate of others

2) Act in good faith towards other players & the admins

And these additional rules:

3) Do not sticky-camp opaque spawn doors

4) No pornography

5) No harassment, including those of a racist & sexual orientation nature

The admins reserve the right to make additional stipulations.

Hope you enjoy your time here!

I guess that doesn't quite cover it - here's attempt #5

I think the racist/offensive remarks and harassment fall under "be courteous," although I suppose being specific doesn't hurt. Good call on having admins reserve the right to lay down the law.

I understand the intent behind prohibiting sticky camping of spawn doors and it's almost definitely a good rule to have, but I have to admit that something about dictating the way you're (not) allowed to play the game rubs me the wrong way ever so slightly, possibly because a Spy or Heavy can be almost as deadly when camping and there's no rule against them. (Goodness knows I love camping spawn sometimes.) What I'm getting at is if there's possibly a way to achieve the same effect without explicitly saying "don't play the game this way." IDK, I'm rambling slightly.

Me personally, I have no issue with camping regardless. Usually it forces a change of strategy.

Well there's a difference between camping spawn because you're supposed to, such as RED during the opening moments of every A/D map ever, camping because you need to buy some time or the objective is simply too close to spawn, such as BLU when attacking every final point ever, and camping because you and/or your team is taking the piss out of the enemy.

Anecdote: The second game of TF2 I ever played, I joined RED team on Dustbowl's second stage. BLU had a full spawn camp going, we're talking Demomen, Heavies, Medics, and Sentries. The whole nine yards. That kind of spawn camping should definitely be discouraged, but I'm not sure how to differentiate it succinctly for a server rule.

EDIT: An idea. "Please exhibit proper sportsmanlike behavior." Possibly a few words about how we're all here to have fun, not to wave our e-peens around. (Fun fact: Firefox recognizes "e-peen" as a word.)

The admins reserve the right to make additional stipulations.

Just make sure that the admins/mods understand the breadth of their power. None of this kicking/banning players/classes just because of sentry position or other similar situations.

As long as the players follow the 'Be courteous to other players' rule, there shouldn't be an issue.
