AngelCityOutlaw
The only time I thought that North America truly had the best bands on the block was in the hair metal era. Of which I am a huge fan (as if you couldn't tell). Other than that though, it's all about Europe. South America rocks hard too with bands like Angra, Sepultura, Watchmen, Andre Matos etc. For the most part though, I just can't get enough of Europe's metal. Like this stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atxbx3qpDNM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_K_NeMB-zU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HP6UzVwXLc v=aVoLnSv7mjs'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVoLnSv7mjs Like...damn! There's obviously countless more, Helloween, Gamma Ray, etc. Scandinavia especially is a breeding ground for awesome shit. While we do have Kamelot, Symphony X, Iced Earth and such here in North America. Most "metal" now is just brutal death metal oriented stuff. What do you think of Europe's metal scene? What are some of your favorite bands? Which have you saw live? CDs you own etc?
Chernabogue
Helloween is my fav band. Never got the chance to see them live though. I have all Deris-era CD's and this guy is a really awesome singer.

Necrotic
Yeah, I agree Europe has a lot of great tech death like Decapitated and Spawn of-- While we do have Kamelot, Symphony X, Iced Earth and such here in North America. Most "metal" now is just brutal death metal oriented stuff. Oh guess I'll just head the other way then.

Bahamut
Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Blind Guardian are amongst my favorites - I'm glad I got to see all 3 live (as well as meet Kai Hansen).

Avatar of Justice
I laugh when I see VH1's "The Metal Show," and they only talk about the American metal stuff from 20 years ago. Europe is where it is at. Love me some Epica. Where else can I find a band singing about socialism and quantum physics? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqtfrj0PtRA
Meteo Xavier
Everytime I go into any discussion about metal music, I get a laundry list of bands I would have never heard of. What, are you all too good for a little POISON? Dragonforce FTW! \m/^o^\m/
Necrotic
:3 I love most of the bands you guys have mentioned so far. Seems most of you guys here really dig power metal (I was kidding in my above post but I am more partial to death metal, which Europe has a LOT of great bands in as well). I noticed Sonata Arctica hasn't gotten a mention yet. Love those Finns.

PriZm
If you're into Symphony X and prog in general, you owe it to yourself to check out Andromeda.
Necrotic
If you're into Symphony X and prog in general, you owe it to yourself to check out Andromeda. These guys get huge recommendations from me as well.
Frederic Petitpas
^ Andromeda is indeed awesome. I would add the band Spheric Universe Experience to these kind of suggestions. Royal Hunt and At Vance are also awesome bands and I think they are euro. Much less metal but very good is the band Katatonia. Check out Bal-Sagoth too, sounds like Skyrim to me.. lol I could maybe promote some bands from Quebec now. Here one in the same genre you mentionned, Forgotten Tales, plus the drummer is from my hometown and they played with bands like nightwish, Blind Gardian and stuff.. (singer is a girl)If you don't only like power metal I'd also suggest another band from around here, their erlier material is less brutal; Quo Vadis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t88H8B7amYM here's a nice instrumental from the same album (day into night) Just for pluggin in my brother's band Feast Of Corpses (he's the drummer) and show an opposite suggestion, here's some extrem metal lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKjT2z7eHBU (the album just came out) probably one of the most brutal band throughout quebec. finally the last one; Unexpect. We were supposed to play a show with them the other day but my other guitarist broke his hand in a motocross accident a week before lol.. They toured with Dream Theater.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl1Ks7EnZ_E look them up, they look, and the signer is pretty hot. The genre of music can't be describe, you need the whole album. Necrotic
I could maybe promote some bands from Quebec now. Not that I want to keep derailing the thread too badly, but Quebec is host to some of the best metal I've heard worldwide. Quo Vadis being a favourite of mine, and Unexpect being a band I've been meaning to check out for some time (that song you linked is ridiculously good by the way). Especially that so many bands have a tendency to eclectically mix in some really cool jazz fusion elements in their music. , , Gorguts, , Augury, Martyr
Frederic Petitpas
, The composer of Blackguard is acutally the guy who mixed/masterised my brother's band new album and might join as a bass player in a near future. Me, I was supposed to get my metal album recorded by the guy of Quo Vadis a few years back (but things changed) and the guy of black gard was also in the band of my band's ex guitarist. LoL how small is the world ?
Omega
sturm und drang Ensiferum Anf if you want something that's a bit more grim and heavy... Akma Korpiklaani Insomnium I could go on and on, and this is only the stuff I know that comes from Finland. Sweden and Norway have also gread deal of many excellent metal bands. Truly, the Northern countries are where good and honest metal is made.
Vakri
America isn't all bad: 5ive Behold... the Arctopus Dream Theatre Dysrhythmia Iced Earth Isis Kamelot Liquid Tension Experiment Manowar Mastodon Morgion Nile Pelican Periphery Scale The Summit Symphony X Wolves in the Throne Room Etc. Of course, for every decent band we've got, there's about 10 in Europe.
Garpocalypse
Oh please don't get me started on this topic. Melodic Death Metal became an obsession of mine a few years ago. I'll keep it short this time: Greatest Metal Album of all time! Also have been listening to alot of Finntroll and Kalmah lately.
AngelCityOutlaw
Some GREAT lists in here so far. Andromeda was brought up a couple times. A few years ago I was simply addicted to that band. Thanks for bringing them up again! I'll have to check out the stuff they've released since. Germany's Brainstorm is awesome as well. Can't forget Norway's too The other day I gave "Enigmatic: Calling" by Pagan's mind another spin. Anyone out there pick up PM's newest album? I've only heard a couple songs off it and it seems good. Sansato
I'm mostly into individual songs and not albums or bands, though I like: Nightwish with Tarja Turunen as vocalist (haven't heard anything outside of Once, though) Sonata Arctica Within Temptation Luca Turilli (both his solo work and his stuff with Rhapsody of Fire).
