Super Smash Bros. 4

Just played it with a friend. Killer graphics, great stages, but the amount of items and the way they're used is pretty chaotic. Definitely gonna play the same way as PM and Melee and just turn off the items.

Also played as some new characters like Pac-Man, Palutena, and Little Mac. Little Mac is exactly as I expected. Overpowered on the ground but if the opponent can get him in the air, he's screwed. Pac-Man was neat as well. Palutena actually surprised me. She's better than I thought she would be.

The game still feels a little floaty and slow but I didn't expect it to be as fast as Melee. Sakurai's just going to have to bring back that fast-paced gameplay that Melee had in order for me to like any other Smash game as much as that one, and I don't know if he'll ever do that. Marth always feels really good to play in Melee and PM and in this game it just felt really weak. Oh well.

I was really enjoying this game a lot up. The 3DS version played like that perfect balance between Melee and Brawl, and I was preparing for what would likely be the best in the Smash Bros franchise.

I fired up the Wii U version and had a blast with the speed and fluidity of the game, with its truckload of characters, stages and items. This was definitely my favorite installment in the franchise so far, fixing the problems Brawl had without slipping back into the same mistakes Melee made as well.

I buckled down for a full evening of play in order to unlock all the hidden characters and stages before inviting my friends to join me, and the real Smash would begin.

During a short break on my unlocking journey, I popped my head into Sound Test.

Sonic Boom was missing.

DK Rap was missing.

0/10; worst Smash Bros ever.

Hey now, apparently you can find new music like you could in Brawl. There's still hope for the DK rap.

Didn't even make a new song for flat zone X 0 stars more like super smash blunders

Anyways, How are you all finding the 8 Player mode? I haven't gotten any friends together to try it yet, but I've been having a lot of trouble just keeping track of myself in CPU battles.

I had 6 players plus one amiibo. It was a lot of fun, but a bit unlikely to be a mainstay of our play.

Great Cave Offensive is sometimes just too colourful and spread out to properly play. It's very easy to lose sight of.... everyone. But maybe I'm just hating on it because of that ONE EVENT MATCH. Kirby needs to go from 130% to 0% by eating food in roughly 90 seconds. Absolutely dreadful.

Oh, speaking of amiibos, I got the entire first wave. They are actually quite gorgeous. Paint jobs are top-notch and the stands don't really detract from them. Only one who looks weird is Villager, because his nose is lower than it should be, but oh well.

We also played a round of smash run. Since the max is 4 players we really didn't get a good feel for it, since there were about 8 or 9 people present and we played the shortest match possible (15 rounds). Will need to play more later to get a better idea of how good it is.

Lucina is best, personally. She plays more like the Marth from Melee than Marth himself does. I don't thinks she's a "cheap, easier version" of Marth, but I could agree with the fact she still is basically a clone with a different appearance and altered mechanics.

Robin's kinda cool. Shulk is really neat too. I like Shulk

And holy crap, Diddy Kong just went from being a lame character in Brawl to kicking some serious butt in this game. Diddy Kong is freaking amazing in this game.

I can confirm that the DK Rap is unlockable.

Hmmm, okay, we'll make it 5/10.

Never mind, still no Sonic Boom, now no Fountain of Dreams as well; 0/10.

On a more serious note: Yoshi is a complete monster now, and I'm happy with that. Some of my favorite non-Fox characters now seem solidly competitive (Ness, Link, Samus, et al.) while old favorites are still strong (Fox, Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, etc.) if not all top-tier. The new additions are mostly equally fun and viable, save for Mega Man, who is sadly terrible. I hope he gets buffed up soon.

But Yoshi is just ridiculous. He's fast, he's strong, he has a good air game, he can juggle, he can spike, and he's not a lightweight. I always forget how heavy he is because he just seems like he'd be a lightweight to me, then I get into a match and I'm tanking killing blows at 100% and up.

Also he has the best new costume in the game. Yes, Black Yoshi is better than Fierce Deity Link and you know it.

So how's everyone's luck with getting CDs during battle? I haven't encountered a single one. I remember making a CD factory in Brawl, but even without that I'm pretty sure they showed up more frequently.

haven't seen one so far but I also have only played a maximum of 3 hours with my friend. I don't actually have the game yet. I pre-ordered it but then lost my Wii U and then once my pre-order time expired, I suddenly found the Wii U.

and so now I have a Wii U with no Smash.

I've played like 12 hours or more over the last 3 days. If I got any CDs, I haven't noticed.

Also played an 8-player extravaganza with 7 amiibos. It was pretty fun and funny but they started to really kick my as after only 5 or so matches. That said, amiibos can give you goodies via winning matches. So if you train them up and they win fights (maybe put them on a team with you?) it might be a good way to get the less common equipment, extra money, trophies, and custom moves.

I've got a Kirby amiibo who is absolutely beastly. He nabs every item, tactically uses every final smash, delivers crazy beatdowns and has longevity in spades.

I hadn't encountered any CDs through regular play, and then found a tedious but effective farming method for CDs. Mew drops trophies/CDs/wrench-bags, so Master Balls only on high, given enough time nets you quite a few CDs if you have the patience, or a Netflix queue to occupy you while you mindlessly throw Pokeballs for an hour. In a 99-stock game I net 6 new tracks.

Sadly have not been able to play Smash 4 yet as my pre-order got delayed. However I do plan on trying to main Ness. He seems to have some great follow up's and some openings for combos which is very exciting, especially since he hasn't ever been that viable in any of the past games, even in 64. I'm really hoping he won't get any unnecessary nerfs.

I always found Ness to be really strong in 64. His Melee and Brawl counterparts were much weaker, but he is looking pretty solid in his latest iteration.

Is Ness solid in 64? I haven't seen to many top level matches where someone goes Ness sadly. It'd be awesome to see Isai try to pick him up for Apex at some point like he did with Jiggs.

Relatively, Ness is on the bottom end of the character list, but the spread isn't too wide in that game to begin with.

On a related note, Smash WiiU is single-handedly fueling my graphics porn quota. It's like I can almost see the salt from my opponents after they fail to bow to God that is Duck Hunt

Hey, not a bad idea. I'd forgotten Mew dropped stuff. It's not quite Brawl's mashfest, but it's better than nothing.

Also, I love that every stage has a final destination form. I can enjoy the music and visual style of Great Cave Offensive without putting up with the zoomed-out-to-another-dimension camera.

Initial character impressions:

Yoshi: feels fucking great. Might be my new main.

Shulk: fun.

Fox: feels like complete ass, but maybe I'm just too used to how he handled in melee.

Kirby and Ness: better than I expected.

Ganondorf and Mario: Meh.

Rosalina: how do I drive this thing?

Palutena: I must

Captain Falcon: Feels more or less right, but the timing is just off enough that I have not yet been able to sweet spot the knee a single time. Is there even a sweet spot for it in this game?

Shiek: decent.

Robin: loads of fun.

Okay so does anyone have a level 50 amiibo yet? I have a level 50 Marth...cannot beat shim for the life of me. He even countered metanight and zero suit samus' attacks. (I'd consider myself an above average smasher) The computer is able to tip you almost every time. So he was killing medium weight characters in 3-5 total hits consistently.

One thing I have noticed is that games can very much be about match-ups and appropiate strategy. Online I played the most ridiculous Ness player who could combo you for around 35-50% easily. I was Lucina, Marth, and Little Mac and he destroyed me. Then I played as Samus and spaced him and he was toast.

Been playing a bit with MegaMan. Weird character but super fun as soon as he clicks. Has such an awesome variety of moves and options.

Fox, Falco, and Sonic got new recordings. In Fox and Falco's cases they go back to their original voices from SF64, and Sonic got his new voice actor. Ike, Marth, Captain Falcon, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Meta-Knight, Link, Zelda, Toon Link, Sheik, Ganondorf, Zero Suit Samus, Yoshi, Lucario, Pikachu, etc etc etc are all the same.
