  1. Good call! I'm essentially doing the same (and waiting on some recordings) so it's gonna be an interesting battle between us. Have at you! in all seriousness, I'm very curious what you came up with!

  2. If you plan to study composition at a university level, your prospects will be better if you have good grades. Most music programs will also require proficiency on a musical instrument, and learning anything you can right now about music theory will be beneficial as well, because a lot of new college students get blindsided by the music theory classes. Professionally, though, no one cares about about a composer's grades (unless maybe you intend to teach). That said, if you do intend to do university-level composition study, school will likely to be the last time in your life that you will be able to focus on such a wide variety of music topics in depth and all at the same time, so you should make the most of it -- it will be your knowledge itself and not the degree that serves you as a composer. Piano skills, music theory, applied composition lessons, and tech-related subjects (recording, Finale/Sibelius, DAWs, etc.) will probably the most important areas of study.

  3. Depends on where you want to go next. Were you planning on being a composition major at a university? If so maintaining a high GPA is a must for both financial and academic reasons. Keeping a high GPA will give you a lot more opportunities than an average one will. Music majors tend to have higher than average grades and if you don't fall into that category it will reflect poorly on you and probably affect you socially as well. As far as freelancing goes, probably not...? People who are looking to employ your skills are more likely to judge you by your portfolio/past work experience/social network since it requires a number of hoops to obtain your transcript in the first place.

  5. Shinobi 3 is one of my favourite games of all time. People always talk about the Revenge of Shinobi, which has a pretty rad Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack to be fair. But much less love is given to Shinobi 3. I found it had a much stronger impact on me growing up. The game plays AMAZINGLY WELL and holds up excellent to this day, and the music and gameplay both feel way more intense and satisfying than the Revenge of Shinobi. Plus the animations and general level of detail are awesome. The soundtrack also uses this motif throughout the game that just helps tie everything together so well. Yeah I know the game is on several Genesis collections, and there's the odd remix done for it, but for some reason I don't see a lot of people talking about it despite that. It's just kind of there, yet I think its one of the most well designed action platformers out there even to this day. It deserves so much more love.

  6. Interesting. Might check that game out. Also, I'd like to point out LoD's soundtrack greatness....Some of its themes are on my hit list for a remix later on down the line. Let me also add this piece of hell yeah: Bushido Blade was what honestly pushed me into taking Kendo. It's soundtrack and story (at least #2's story) pulled you in with its unique gameplay. Definitely deserving of a reboot!

  7. I think there could be a more obvious transition into 1:17; I do hear a snare fill and that cymbal hit at 1:17, but maybe the piano could have some leadin notes to signal 1:17, so I agree with Txai on that. Same at 1:54. I love the break at 2:20. I think that it might be even cooler if you had the bass do some filler runs as well (increasing in complexity on each subsequent fill?), kind of like what you would hear from Jaco Pastorius. And then maybe sweep through the track to see what variation you can add to repeated sections. I'd say that's my main crit at this point. I hear a lot of that already; some of it is more subtle, like extra octave notes, but even that works! Other than that, this is a seriously advanced arrangement. I see no reason why it wouldn't pass on arrangement. I'd say you're good to go whenever you're totally happy with it.

  9. I'm not trying to mini-mod here but I'm not sure if "reporting" or PMing a mod is the right thing to do or not and I don't want to report a thread that really is just people trying to help. However, this thread threw me off for a second when I clicked on it because I seem to remember it being about VST guitars in FL Studio. But @Winning900 is now asking a string of production questions completely unrelated to the OP. I would recommend rather than asking a string of such questions, focus on one or two things at a time, put them into practice in a composition or remix and then get feedback on them in the Workshop forums. It will be easier and more organized to focus on improving one thing at a time that way and you'll have examples of your own work there right from the get-go.

  10. Some more PS1 greatness This game seriously needs a remake or new entry! F-Zero with floating motorcycles! It was tough as nails because they used ghosts of runs from the best players for the AI so the opponents always had near perfect runs, but man was it fun and that Chuck Meyers & Lance Lenhart soundtrack was the best. My grandpa is a huge fan of the MediEvil games and beat 1 and 2 numerous times. He'd buy a next-gen console if they brought it back. Really good games. Twisted Metal may have reigned supreme, but Vigilante 8 had a certain crazy charm to it and Star Wars: Demolition needs no explanation. Not a PS1 game, but I just remembered this. BEST. BOMBERMAN. GAME. EVER. Billy West and Charlie Adler did the voices and it is absolutely hilarious. It's much more vulgar than the other bomberman games, really fast-paced and the animations for when a bomberman is cornered are also really funny. God damn, I miss this game.

  11. It's been quite the journey. Learned a lot along the way. Unless there is more critique (cause I can't think of what I could add/change atm) I'm going to continue working on Asgore's theme.

    Your Hidden Gems?

This. This so much. It may have followed every trope in the book to the letter, but it did it well. Aside from this, I'd also point to Way of the Samurai for PS2 Also Tales of Maj'eyal, a roguelike. It's free to download or can be bought on Steam to support the dev. Tons of creative classes and skill tree branches. You can be a time-manipulating mage and effectively tear the fabric of time through your meddling to the point where things around you are exploding and/or teleporting. Depending on how you build your character, that could be a good thing or a terrible thing. isn't that enough? Includes a classic "Roguelike" mode with permadeath, an Adventure mode(limited revives) or an Exploration mode for those who just want to enjoy the awesome story and lore.

  14. That's a FF NES trilogy thang Hi. I am editing in a little something here I wanted to say. Shortly after announcing this project, a facebook friend informed me that there was another FF8 album coming out soon from a different group of people. I guess I was told as a warning, perhaps because there'd be some conflict between that album and this one. I told him I didn't see it that way and I don't. I don't mean any offense to the other project, I'm sure it will have some great stuff on it, however... looking at the claims list here, I know these people. I've heard of them, I've heard their work and I know that a high level of quality will be attained with this album. So looking past the obvious thing of OCR album releases being really top notch with websites, artwork, trailers, etc... we'll still have that edge of the increased quality control, but through the project process and through the evaluation / submissions panel. I'm not "denouncing" anything. I'm going to check out that "other" album, even though I think it's going to cost money. I'm not going to buy it. But I'll preview some of it. If you were involved with that album and chose to contribute here too, that is awesome. I appreciate every artist who has signed on here for the love of the soundtrack and love of working on music in general. If I could pay you guys I would (looking at the list of claims, I'd have to be damn rich to give each person what they deserve). I am glad that your passion surpasses the idea of a measly percentage of a percentage of sales. So that's it. I didn't know about it, now I do, but it doesn't change anything, and I hope none of you are discouraged either. We'll show the world what a real FF8 album sounds like, and OCR's release package will be a thing of beauty.
