  1. My favorite series for over 20 years. I celebrated by making a new song based on the Metroid Prime battle XD

  2. Liking this... a lot. I was unfamiliar with the source, but gave it a listen (here). The pan flute in the ReMix had confused me at first, but now I get the connection to the original work. Great variability in pace and instrumentation. You take a lot of classic EDM instruments and give them new life. The violin was a nice touch. It would be even more impactful with a better sample, or live recording. A bit thrown by the choir voices, as they seem a little out of place and could easily be replaced by another instrument, even one that appears later (as a hint). Fantastic start, and a very nice birthday present. Looking forward to hearing how this evolves.

    OC ReMix on Spotify?

Yes, they do make a fuss - specifically, Square Enix got very upset when the OCR FF6 album kickstarter got underway to fund a physical release of the album (all money went into printing the album - no profit was to be made). Some negotiation happened and they eventually allowed it under certain conditions, but it was a very complex ordeal that took months to resolve. No one but Pretzel and Zircon (the album's head person) knows the full details of the negotiation, but to say the least it wasn't simple or easy.

  4. That remake is amazing. Kinda makes me mad that Nintendo gave up on 2D Metroid.

  5. My favorite Metroid is... Fusion. I know, I know, it's the evil bastard child (for some reason) but it's one of the few Metroid games I really enjoyed. I've played it at least eight times since I got the GBA cart back in 2002 and on my 3DS (Ambassador, baby!), whereas the rest of the series is pretty much one playthrough and I'm done with it. Prime? Completed the first one, almost finished the second never completed the third. Original and Super? Tried them... never really got into them. Though Super Metroid had some pretty good music. Metroid 2 on the GameBoy is a part of my collection, even if it's only something I've played a few times. Pretty good for the hardware and the screen limitations, as they used a huge sprite for Samus. If only one game out of an entire series can make me keep playing it, then that series has done something right, regardless of the rest. Thanks for some good times, Samus.

  6. No it _wouldn't_, because licensing even just a single album is not a "moderate amount" of effort. You're also ignoring the fact that OCReMix generating revenue on the work of hundreds of artists is a recipe for disaster. Distributing revenue, generating tax forms, etc. Not a single person on this site ever signed a legal contract giving rights to OCR to monetize their work, nor did they sign it waiving their right to the revenue so that OCR could keep it for itself. The submission policy covers distribution, it does not grant OCR any rights to use the music commercially and for profit. Also, just as an aside, if OCR does miraculously build all of the infrastructure needed for this project, it's now a commercial, for-profit entity and its eventual goal of getting the 501c3 non-profit status would go down the drain.

  9. We've standardized how we use thread tags here because the way people have been using them aren't actually helpful. You can no longer add your own custom tags to threads. You'll be selecting from a list. Here are the tags and what they mean: album If your project is an album. remixer If you're looking for remixers. artist If you're looking for an artist to draw cover or insert art. video editor If you're looking for a video editor to work on a trailer or promotional video for you. composer If you're looking for a composer for some kind of non-album project, like a game. vocalist If you're looking for someone to sing for you. instrumentalist If you're looking for someone to play an instrument for you. engineer If you're looking for someone to handle the technical aspects of music production for you, like mixing and mastering. director If you're looking for someone to manage a project for you. This is a catch-all term for co-directors and assistant directors as well. web designer If you're looking for someone to build a website for your project. lyricist If you're looking for something to write lyrics for a song. voice actor If you're looking for someone to provide spoken word or acting for your project.

  10. Whoo, this will be fun. I will give you a small amount of agreement here. OC ReMixes aren't remixes. They are ReMixes. There is a difference. OCR has standards that vary from the typical norm, and we look for a specific niche of arrangement. It's not going to fit your average cover or remix, but that's not what we're going for. Plenty of that everywhere else. Guess what? Every remix on the site does have some semblance of the original. Some of the mixes are easier to figure out than others, true. Not to spark flames here, but just because you don't hear it and don't agree with it doesn't mean it's not there. Just going back to our standards and judging process, we look for a level of quality in production, so you're right, all the songs sound great! No judges, staff, or even DJP himself makes any money from this site. We work for free, to bring you awesome music. Any money made off of shirts/etc goes to keeping the site running. LOVE that song! Also, I totally hear Mario Paint throughout that; it's instantly recognizable to me. And it's a damn cool arrangement. Here's the thing; you're asking people to prove something that is somewhat subjective based on how people listen to things, their musical aptitude, and their ability to study music. Not everyone is going to come to the same conclusion, or be able to hear the connections between a source and a ReMix as well as others. In general, you can study a mix vs. a source and do a breakdown of what part is where in the mix, how they tie together, etc. You may or may not hear what someone points out to you. You may or may not agree between the connections. That's fine, because everyone is different. However, when you come to a board like this and claim that you are the absolute authority in knowledge of the subject, you're going to instigate flame wars that honestly are not worth the time or effort. I'd find it way better if you took the time to look at a breakdown of a mix and see the connections yourself, or disagree with them. Maybe write a thoughtful review of the mix on how it did or didn't work. Ask others to point out parts you might have missed. People who submit to OCR take the sources and work to put them in a new light and arrange them in a way that is different from your run-of-the-mill cover or remix (not to say that there aren't awesome and original covers and mixes, I assure you there are plenty!). We do things differently here, so enjoy this little niche of the video game arrangement community for what it is, not what it isn't, IMO.
