  1. Wow, that's awesome. Congratulations giving him a copy of votls will be awesome
  2. It appears that the popularity of the site and number of submissions is always steadily increasing; correct me if I'm wrong on either of those two counts. How will the submission process continue to accommodate? Will you keep adding more judges? Will you find ways to limit submissions? Will you somehow add further emphasis to the wip section?
  3. Lol, I have this one on my keyboard (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/nes/mm3spark.txt)
  4. I have to agree, but I cant deny my habits. Ironically, I'm listening to Mark Vera's Medieval Magic track as I write now. It's one of my favs, but I've never played the game Wizardry. I only know of it because I heard it on your show, but I was only listening to the show for the prot interview
  5. I'm curious Please respond with the appropriate number (regarding remixes posted on OCR) 1 I listen to most songs posted these days, regardless of the game or artist 2 I listen to a song only if I know the game/series music or if I like the artist (mostly) 3 other (explain) I must admit I fall into the number 2 category. Yes, I am a bona fide piece of shit, and I'm curious as to how many other people are (generally).
  6. I see a bright future in which a highlight from the OCR Store is a highly-coveted business promotion on an international scale.
  7. I guess the underlying question for all of this is how much money is an object to me. The money for all of this is coming out of my college fund. This spring is my first semester, but I'm only taking 10 hrs. Next fall is when my freshman year really gets started at a different school (at least, that's the plan). However, it will be a couple of months before I know how much that is going to cost. Considering how much college could potentially cost, I wouldn't blink at paying a few hundred dollars more for my favorite OS with the DAW I'm used to. But if I'm going to be breaking the bank (my dad's bank, actually) for college money and it's going to be a two thousand dollar difference to go the Mac way, then I'm starting to think that maybe a change-up in the work flow might be a healthy choice. I really would like to have a laptop when this semester starts, but I think it would be best to wait until I have a clearer picture of how far my college fund needs to stretch. (Although, again, $3000 is spare change compared to what college might cost... but considering I get to keep what is left over from the fund, I don't want to get my financial life started by throwing that much money at something w/o a second thought.) Because the price difference isn't as dramatic as I initially thought, I'm leaning towards Mac again, but I'll wait. Besides, since I've grown up on Logic Express, a change in work flow might really do me some good. Thanks again for all the good points. I'm continuing to weigh my options.
  8. So it appears that, with a student discount and 3rd party RAM, I could get the above Mac system with Logic for around $3000. If I custom built with avadirect, it would end up around $2100, assuming I spent about $800 on music software. That's getting closer... Thanks, guys. That's definitely more to think about.
  9. So I'm in the market for a new laptop for school, music, games, etc. • MacBook Pro OS X 10.5 15 in screen 2.4 Ghz duo 160 GBs hard drive 4 GBs RAM NVidia card w/ 256MB SDRAM $3,200 • Dell Vostro 1500 Windows XP 15.4 in screen 2.4 Ghz duo 120 GBs hard drive 4 GBs RAM NVidia card w/ 256MB SDRAM $1,700 So I've been using an iMac with Logic Express 7 since 2004. I learned everything I know about DAWs on it, and it's all I know. For obvious reasons, though, I'm thinking about heading back to the PC world. Trouble is, now I'm a complete noob again. I know very little about those PC titles I've seen talked about on these forums for years. EDIT: to narrow the scope of my question, what software title/combination in the $500 range would you suggest as roughly equivalent to the music production in Logic Studio? EDIT: my situation is now resolved - info on page 4
  10. My first computer was an Apple Performa (Power Pete FTW!), and since then I've had three iMacs and a Mac Book Pro with two PCs squeezed in there somewhere. When it comes right down to it, if you're willing to get used to a new UI, either platform will get the job done for you. Really, you just have to decide what software you're interested in and which platform will deliver it to you. btw, don't get caught up in the whole Mac user / Windows user / trendy / anti-iPod / Steve Gates / coffee shop / oxford / turtle neck / wtvr / k thx / bye / wait / wtf was I talking about thing. Just go with what makes your life easier.
  11. same here. my older sister and I played it a lot when we were little. She figured out the tough stuff and got to the last level and I was eventually the one who beat it. we lol'd at the ending graphics awesome music, too - both 1 and 2
  12. I guessed on 3 and got it right, but I dont quite understand how it fits the entire clue ... stuck on 4, although I see generally what's going on and the connection in the song.
  13. As far as what I'm reading from the main site, you're good to get started. As you improve, I think you'll want to improve the quality of your audio samples, though. That said, you need to have a very important paradigm shift. Usually this shift only comes with experience, but the more you practice it now, the better off you'll be: You need to have a mental image/plan of the song you're trying to put together first, then see for yourself if your hardware and software can get you there. I know this sounds simple, but it will improve your creativity and save you a lot of mindless piddling. Btw, here is one of my early remix attempts. I sequenced it on my midi keyboard and recorded the audio directly into my computer. This keyboard has some pretty nice sounds, but its interface is such that it took an extremely long time to sequence. I don't know how good the sound banks on your keyboard are, but you're already in a better interface situation than I was. Good luck, and remember: have a plan, and then see how your resources can get you there.
  14. Music theory is nothing more than definitions in the history of music. The "rules" aspect comes in when teachers package music theory in order to the show practical benefits for students. This harmony can go here, this scale can go over this harmony, etc. This is useful knowledge for people who compose or perform in this manner, but it is contrary to the way some people compose/perform. To the the latter group of people, music theory then becomes this stupid mix of arbitrary rules. These people are missing that fact that they are rebelling not against music theory, but against the way it is packaged for them. There is nothing about music theory (in the most abstract sense of the word) that tells you what to do. It's there to give words to explain what is there. To some people it can be useful in their creative process, but it is useful to EVERYONE from a historical standpoint, and it makes communcating with other musicians about music much easier. So if you're looking to use music theory as a practical tool in the creation of music, then there are a lot of resources available to you. However, if you want to study it for the sake of understanding music and its history, you're going to have to be mindful that a lot of music theory literature is simplified and packaged to give people a framework for composing/performing/improvising, and it isn't necessarily geared towards understanding. (Again, this is why for some people music theory has a reputation for being arbitray and stupid, and to a certain extent they're right.)
  15. Next time I do some analysis, I'm going to pull out one of those and stare directly at my teacher with the most serious of glances.
  16. Sure, there are bigger fish to fry in this world, but anchovies taste good too... that said, I skimmed the thread and checked his page again, but I can't find where it came to light that he made a mistake. so what happened?
  17. oh see, I didn't really share everyone's enthusiasm ... until I looked at his photo I understand know
  18. don't forget: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?p=355468#355468
  19. because we all know how often people's hearts and minds are changed by internet drama but it does feel good to bring the hammer down every once and a while
  20. Logic does not follow your system preferences. It has its own you must change. I assume Garage Band is the same way.
  21. I didn't know OCR's Russell Cox, and I laughed harder at the title of this thread than anything recently. I think it's the exclamation point: russell cox blew himself up!
  22. the music page isn't loading, but the others are very impressive. You look like Hugo Weaving in that pic on mazedudeproductions
