Dual monitors are not "necessary", but they are awesome. As for a mixer, depends. If you have a few different inputs and don't want to constantly be switching patch cords on your audio interface, a mixer could come in handy. I use a mixer to route inputs to the PC and output from the PC to my speakers, as well as inputs that bypass the PC and go directly to the speakers. It's pretty useful.

A VSTi is a virtual instrument, like a synth or sampler. The "i" stands for instrument. Reaper puts instruments in the VSTi folder, and effects in the VST folder. Same for DXi (instruments) and DX (effects). Just an FYI.

Yeah, just a heads up to anyone viewing this thread, the page 1 comments about the acoustic gtr section refer to a previous version.

Go to Track, Insert Virtual Instrument on New Track. Select the synth you want to insert. Then go to View, Media Explorer. Browse to the MIDI file you want to import. Drag and drop it on the track you just created. Assuming you have set up your audio device correctly in Reaper, the MIDI sequence should play using the synth plugin you selected.

Open the Media Explorer and drag a MIDI file to a track that contains a synth plugin.

One last update. I accidentally muted a track.

It's pretty much done. If I can think of little tweaks going forward I'll make them, but I'm pretty comfortable sticking a fork in it. On to the next tune.

Link updated. Bumped down the main drums a hair. I'm pretty satisfied with all the balancing now. I'll see about maybe adding some synthetic elements to the acoustic guitar bit. You guys have convinced me.

Haha, I hear you guys, I really do. But that part is pretty much exactly what I was going for, a completely jarring style shift. I may finesse it, though.

Something that really stuck out at me is the mixing of swing and straight rhythms. It sounds weird to my ears.

The rhythm guitar sounds very harsh in the midrange and is lacking some low end girth.
