  1. Sup! Game : Chrono Chross Song : Star Stealing Girl Enjoy ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/Chrono_Cross_psf.rar - 306 "The Star-Stealing Girl" Right off the bat, there's something missing here. The instrumentation sounded flimsy, the piano cameo sounded mechanically sequenced. The bass and beats that first faded in at :16 are fine, but when they first kick in at :32 they sound lonely. There needs to be something in the background to fill the track out, and the lonely pad back there isn't get the job done, so there's a lot of empty space. The choir vox at 1:04 needed more power behind it. As is, it lacks any impact. The breakdown from 1:38-1:53 was well written, but again, lots of empty space in the background. 2:01 seemingly retread the buildup at :16 but instead came back with some nice variation on the beats, which was very nice. The section at 2:26-2:42 didn't know what it wanted to place the emphasis on. Nearly all the elements (choir vox, e-piano, etc.) seemed to hover at the same volume, with nothing standing out or giving the track forward direction. The vox should have been punched up at first to carry the melody and make its gradual fadeout more meaningful. I liked the subtractive finish with more and more elements gradually dropping out, but the execution was hindered by most of the parts being at a similar volume to begin with. Up until around 2:51, it just sounded like you were removing clutter rather than effectively using the subtraction technique to de-emphasize some parts and place the focus on others. The arrangement is good, but the production doesn't deliver yet. There's lot of activity, but many sections sounded thin regardless. Beef up the background area with that lonely pad to fill out the space more. Revisit the sound balance to give the vox more volume/presence during its foreground parts, and give the ideas behind the 2:26-2:42 section more dynamic impact. Good stuff so far, Frank. More development and more meat would have sealed the deal on this one. A substantive ending that provides a satisfying resolution would also help. And that's the literally the short of it. Flesh this one out and develop the track further. NO (rework/resubmit)
  3. The fixed version is up, by the way. djp finally uploaded it today in the midst of the mix flood currently going on. Thanks a lot for the production revisions, Derek!
  4. url: remixer name/real name: Michael Collins email address: mutronbiphase@hotmail.com song title: Reqiuem of Broken Futures game: Phantasy Star IV, Chrono Cross songs: reqiuem for lutz, chronopolis composa: izuho takuechi, yasunori "cooler than god" mitsuda comments: I wrote this for my dear friend Allie, who requested that I remix the song Reqiuem for Lutz from Phantasy Star. As I was learning the music, I really got into it; it's an awesome song. After I had reiterated the song I wanted to go into something else, and I had wanted to do something with Chronopolis ever since learning how to play it on guitar, so I made that the second half. I'm very proud of it and I hope you'll enjoy it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Wow, haven't heard anything of yours around here in a while. Glad to see you with a new submission, Michael. Let's see what we got. http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/Chrono_Cross_psf.rar - 302 "Chronopolis" http://project2612.org/download.php?id=51 - "Requiem for Lutz" Everything sounded really distant and lossy to start. The right channel was also way too empty compared the the left, and I'm not sure why. The piano sequencing had some decent flow, but still sounded too stiff and mechanical. You gotta humanize it more. The unnatural piano decay at :46 also exposed the sample. Otherwise, definitely some good ideas in adapting "Requiem for Lutz" for piano. There was also a fuckton of light crackling in the background if you listen for it. I dunno what caused these audio deformations, but you've gotta work out these kinks in the production. Changed up to some rock at 1:48. The transition could have been more pronounced, but oh well. Everything sounded cluttered and imbalanced with the production, as the harmonized PS4 melody, countermelody and supporting bassline barely cut through the murkiness of the soundfield. Poorly produced, and it's too bad, because it's a great concept. The timing changeup at 2:54 was too awkward and needed to be smoother. Same with 3:23. You had some timing and mood changes that felt awkward and didn't gel well, but it wasn't for the whole piece and the structure is clearly pretty good. Switched over to focusing on "Chronopolis" at 3:59 after a brief cameo at 3:26. Fairly good stuff with the guitar on melody. The move over into the piano at 4:23 was pretty rough, as the piano had no presence and the mechanical plinkyness (technical term!) sounded off. Sounded better at 4:47 when you changed the feel of the soundscape, as well as the effects on the piano. Good guitar work as well, though again, everything sounded lossy and imbalanced on the production side. The melody from 5:11-5:35 sounded really flat and stiffly played. 5:36 took it down several notches with an acoustic guitar, before 6:06 brought in a really whiny-sounding electric guitar. Not sure why it had to sound that...nasally almost, but it was piercing the ears. Well, the arrangement was good, Michael. The ideas behind it were creative and interpretive, and I was feeling most of the textures. The production though is what needs a ton of work. Sound balance & clarity, humanizing the sequenced parts, THAT's where you need to do your research and improve your hand here. Definitely keep working on this one with tons of advice and revisions before resubmitting. You may wanna use the ReMixing and Works forums for some backup. This arrangement's got great potential and you've already done most of the heavy lifting. NO (resubmit)

When I play games, my ears are always open to what can be remixed. Gatebreaker stood out in the game for me, and I decided to remix it. Unfortunately I didn't have a soundtrack or anything but my TV to play the song off of, so it took me a bit longer than usual to get the notes by ear. The mix started pretty simple, with a lot of help from friends I was able to flesh it out. Fishy volunteered to help me out with some electric guitar. Mastering took the longest, and I'm happy with where it stands now. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (Game Rip) - "Gatebreaker" Nice source tune choice, thanks for providing the original. Good to see something so melodic in a recent game. Sequencing of the opening sounds was a bit awkward, but the tone was good. At :13 when the percussion took over, the melody was way too soft compared to the beatwork. The beats themselves were pretty bland with boring patterns and didn't fill out the soundfield well. Where's the beef, bro? I'm a Fishy fan at this point, so I liked his guitar at :41, but wished there was more of an edge to it. Sound balance needs to be handled more judiciously. The transition at 2:22 worked surprisingly well, IMO. It can come across as abrupt, but I was feeling it. The arrangement is in the right direction, but this track needs something to latch onto as a listener and I'll be frank in that not even one element grabs you. It's all pretty...decent, but doesn't go beyond that in terms of making the textures click or (given the genre) the arrangement energetic and engaging. The material from 2:22-3:41 was the more successful on this level though than the intro. I'm looking to my fellow Js for some tips on giving the background elements more momentum, because that's one critical component that I think is missing. Talk to some more electronic artists and personally solicit feedback from them as well, as this has other issues. Work more on enhancing those beat patterns, filling out the soundfield and readdressing the sound balance. I think this is your most promising arrangement from a creative standpoint, but the execution is bland and not at its full potential. NO (resubmit)
  6. Awesome Flash work, but completely groan-inducing, out-of-character dialogue from the SF characters. Akuma in particular, just awful. Why did Akuma and Chameleon ever have a big space gun anywhere near their fight? I would have much rather seen something without so much creative liberty taken with the characters. This is how cover song fanatics feel when they hear stuff on OCR. Still, amazing Flash work, and great visual presentation by Proxicide.
  7. Hello, This is my first remix Remixer Name: Sarin Real Name : Clint Kingsbery email : sarin000@gmail.com website: www.heartsfail.com userid: 20990 Remix info Name of Game: Drakken for the Super Nintendo Name of individual song: This is a remix of the earth island night music Information: The music is composed by Hiroyuki Masuno The game was for the SNES. I've included my mp3 file as well as the original SPC file of the song. Hope you like:) Clint ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=drk - "Earth Area (Night)" [drk-05.spc] Pretty cool; good source tune choice. Reverb was way over the top, making everything sound flooded and too lo-fi. The main changes to the arrangement were a move involved left hand part. Some really fake/awkward sounding string samples joined in at 1:37. Bow movements on the strings were extra jerky and unnatural sounding, so more finesse needs to be developed there. On the production side, everything sounds extra warbly and lossy. The string writing was a good additive element to the arrangement though, even though the piano melody didn't tread any significant new ground. Dynamically, this was weak. The energy level was basically the same the whole time, so there wasn't much contrast. Click any part from 1:37-4:56 and it sounds the same. Even if the writing evolved, the instrumentation and textures didn't. This was in the right direction in terms of applying your own spin, Clint, but this needs more attention paid to the production and compositional dynamics. Keep working on it, this has some promise. 8. Thanks very much for the recent updates. Everything newly accepted has been added. Punch-Out!! is our recent large addition, courtesy of Solo! LT: Cousins!
  9. Feel free to PayPal me $37.44, and I'll make sure it gets to a/the rightful owner. Thanks a lot for coming!
  10. BAH! DAMN, didn't see this until after the meetup! I'll get you, !
  11. Second night was just as awesome. BGC & myself (and our respective significant others) all hung out backstage during the entire show. Circles and I filled in for the djp role of giving away the Space Invaders prize on stage. Big thanks go to Mike for making it all happen. Will blog about ALL of that hopefully by tomorrow.
  12. Just listened to this one again after cruising through some past material. It's certainly not to insult any of the other mixes on OCR, but yeah, epic's right on this one. We don't have too many mixes that are this grandiose. Great work per Star's usual.
  13. A wonderful experience. Will blog about it all at VG Frequency this coming weekend. Met loads of great new face, community members and industry professionals alike. Thanks to Tommy, Jack and the entire VGL team for a very enjoyable experience.
  14. We would indeed have a ticket if you could make it. Harmony & Palpable are potential late additions as well. Come on down!
  15. But if you're travelling, don't wear 'em on the way over. Could be really humid. Keep 'em ready to wear for the actual concert.
  16. Yeah, that one's in the To-Do list. Hope that happens sooner rather than later. For anyone who cares, I managed to merge accounts for a number of community members who had to register new accounts. All merges were done to the oldest account so that the earliest Join Date was preserved, I manually updated the old account with the info from the most recent account, and then sent out a password reminder (which was likely the password to the old account). For anyone who cares, post counts were also merged. I think Dan Baranowsky had the most oldschool account, user #50. Enjoy.
  17. Got a new copy of this one. First post.
  18. Remixer Name: Philemon Real Name: Oliver Campbell Email Address: maj_garou@hotmail.com or lashiens@gmail.com Name of game remixed: Final Fantasy X Name of Individual Song remixed: In Zanarkand The song was originally created as a birthday present for a friend back in 2004, who loved Final Fantasy X very much. I couldn't afford a birthday present for her at the time, so instead I stayed up 24 hours working on a remix that I thought she would like. This is the result of that. The total remix was created using Acid Music 3.0, and MTV Music Generator for PC, as well as MTV Music Generator 2 for Playstation 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Not sure where your signals got crossed, but you don't even have the source tune right. Luckily, I'm a big fan of the soundtrack. http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FFX_psf2.rar - (119) "The Sight of Spira" Everything sounded noticeably lossy in terms of the sound quality. Interesting enough opening. The phrasing at :17 was messed up. I initially liked the instrument changes involved here with the intro, though the beats that came in later weren't very strong and the textures were actually pretty empty. The melodic and countermelodic parts were way too quiet, dominated by the bland percussion patterns. The texture of acoustic and electronic percussion together from 1:03-1:24 sounded poorly conceived; the elements there didn't mesh well and the scattered cymbal shots were extremely tacky and out of place. The sustained strings had some overly slow attacks and the note sustains tended to last too long to sound realistic, though you had a decent pad-like sound to them. The woodwind from 2:33-2:44 was very rigidly sequenced and sounded robotic. By 2:54, I was tried of the same beat patterns returning after dropping out. You need more variation to your patterns beyond adding and subtracting them from different sections. The sheer repetition just drags over time. Vary the beat patterns more to keep things fresh. Good idea though at 3:34 in terms of very gradually fading the beats out and then adding whatever that was at 3:44 to bolster the lead; you shouldn't have dropped that one part out so early at 3:54, but kept running with it longer. Still, a good idea to transition over into an ending without the beats and with different instruments to provide contrast during the finish. There's 14 seconds of silence at the end of the file that needs to be removed, BTW. In short, this needs better balancing/mixing of the parts, more complex textures to fill out the soundfield, more realism in the sequencing of the more organic parts, stronger dynamic contrast and variation in the development of the arrangement. EDIT (7/2): The submitting artist sent in a new copy pulling back the bass. The only result now though is that the beatwork has no meat on it and the melodic and countermelodic parts are still too quiet. NO
  19. It's hard to accept, but you better get in touch with reality and realize what authorities have already stated. At this stage, I understand you're being hopeful and in denial, but statements like yours at this point are just naive.
  20. Shows how much Streets of Rage Vig plays. That's alright, he's caught me not being familiar enough with the Addams Family SNES soundtrack. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=56 - "SOR Super Mix" There are some minor new ideas in here versus the first version that was instantly rejected. The Enigma sampling sounds ok, and the drumwork sounded pretty reminiscent of 'em. Otherwise the arrangement is STILL basically a verbatim take on the original. Same (overly repetitive) groove, similar instrumentation, same structure. It's not interpretive enough. The only notable new ideas here are the "Sadeness" and "Murda" sampling and the belltones at 3:00. Streets of Rage is an easy soundtrack to fall into a pitfall with. The originals are awesome, so a lot of people don't end up interpreting them substantially. We don't want your near-verbatim covers though. You're gonna have to change that approach to have a chance here. Looking forward to future subs though. NO
  21. I rike it! I've updated things with some Dale North pimpage. Might not be what you're expecting, but you'll enjoy the read, so head over!
  22. Though I'm more in the middle of the two sides (i.e. there are liberal connections, not 0 connections), I'll back BGC up on these complaints. You guys voted honestly and with no bad intent, but the present collective explanations are weak in terms of specifically explaining how strongly connected the arrangement's writing is to the source tune. The way these read, most of them gloss over understanding/identifying the arrangement substance in favor of approving a great-sounding track. That was clearly not intentional (because who knew the vote would end up split or contentious), but now that Circles has even more serious reservations, I'd like to see more thorough justification given in respect to his concerns. I gave this a relisten just to make sure I gave it a fair shake, and I'd like to think that I generally give liberal tracks a fair chance. Basically, I can understand the YES votes in terms of hearing the similarities, but don't agree on the extent that the connections are faithful enough to the original. I hear them too, especially in the rhythmic changes, so I'm more in the middle where I don't have a huge enough issue if this ended up passing. I'm not saying the following timestamps are strong, consistent connections, I'm just making it clear what associations I heard. The initial pattern from :10-:37, and later consistently used in the background, arranges the backing piano from the source tune (constantly in play in "Sad Song", so no timestamp). Although it's a bit strange to note that it's also similar to the backing part from the clip at :02-05 of the arrangement's intro. The melody from :53-1:21 arranges :00-:05 of the source. 1:21-1:35 arranges the source chorus (:06-:20). 1:50-2:51 is too original to be attributed to the source. The arrangement ideas repeat afterward, for all intents and purposes. This is arguably not a far cry from the arrangement approach of AeroZ lately, with the way Sonic the Hedgehog "Green Lane Avenue" really straddles the line of recognizability with its melodic changes. But I can side-to-side compare that arrangement to its source and take away more of a direct connection where "X" arrangement phrasing is closely derived from "Y" original phrasing. That all being said, I thought this arrangement was slightly too liberal of an approach in terms of overhauling the melodies and bassline of the original, where the first few notes in a phrase are similar, then goes off more into original territory. The dour mood helps keep a feel similar to the original, but I don't think it thus explains away the liberalness of the arrangement. I'd also appreciate more specifics on how this is directly connected to address these concerns. In any case, 2 votes left and potentially a tiebreaker, so good luck.
  23. It's fixed. Please revise your votes accordingly.
  24. Sounds like a murder-suicide to be honest. I'm just waiting for more information to be released. A terrible loss. Benoit was one of my favorite wrestlers, and a great athlete.
