you know what, video games really aren't that fun
Rainman DX replied to Faduger's topic in General Discussion
You gonna give me a counter-example? Or do I just have to take your word for it? And you can't use SSB:M - it's kinda like using a word in its own definition. Right, okay. Do I even have an obligation to reply to this? ... yes. Once again, you cite examples that are demonstrations of greater superior skill than many can claim. But that is not the same thing as character depth. Nearly all of the kills in the first two minutes of the first video are accomplished using Fox's shine. This is not an example of depth, but rather quite the contrary: he was spamming that move. A more creative approach with an equal dose of skill would, for myself, satisfy the conditions for character depth. In Soul Calibur there are virtually innumerable kill moves for characters with three-or-so stances, not just a single one. In my opinion: Ultimate shallow character with great skill: Sheik Better example of deep character with moderate potential: Mario; Ness Best SSB:M example of deep character/lots of possibilities: Samus -

I dunno - sometimes I think you guys are giving Smash Bros. too much credit. I'm no expert myself, having accumulated probably somewhere in the ballpark of only 100 hours of SSB:M in my life (I don't own a GC), but I still understand the principle of every move and how to execute it. I'm not great and I can't pull it off every time, but I know every combination. Soul Calibur (2)? Not so much. I can study up on (GameCube's) Link, Taki, Talim, and Maxi's movelists, but even after a complete session I'm still only done with half of their stances and subsequent moves, etc. The movelists in that game are so extensive and not necessarily intuitive, like in Smash Bros. So, suffice to say that, while I'm not disagreeing that Smash Bros. has a depth to it that makes it a very very engrossing skill-based party game, it will never have the complexity of the likes of Soul Calibur, and consequently I find Smash Bros. to be more my type of game because of it. -

Yes, I heartily agree. However, on this note I cannot relate. The greatest Zelda title of them all deserves its share of my efforts, unto a very near-to 100% completion percentage, even if I only ever make a single save file. I have secured such a mark in every Zelda game before, I will not be deterred now! EDIT: Actually, on that thought, the feeling of 100% completion is, in my mind, likened to the feeling I get when I look over my old MYST journal, containing notes and entries from previous run-throughs of MYST, Riven, and Exile. And now Revelation, which I'm 75% done with. Just perusing through the old numbers, charts, calculations, etc. is rewarding in that nostalgic kind of way. Anyway, I feel the same when I think back to getting 100 Gold Skulltulas or all the trophies in The Minish Cap and other stuff. -
Since we can't submit copyrighted material to the official boards, here's my first submission for y'all to try out. Gitaroo Man's "The Legendary Theme" Just copy the files into a directory entitled The Legendary Theme in your "data" directory of FoF. Anyway, let me know what you think!

That's the one! Thanks for your help. Mods, I just realized this would be better suited in Tech Help & Newbs, but I got my question answered, so you can lock it anyway.

Why can't I add people to my ignore list? I have a buddy list here that's just fine, but why won't vBulletin let me ignore personalities?

I think one of the greatest appeals of SSB:Melee is the simplicity of the controls - not a lot of options, subsequently easier to make rapid decisions. A counterexample, perhaps, would be Soul Calibur 2 - lots of combinations, but button-pressing won't get you anywhere, so it's a more expert-level play. But while enjoyable, not as engrossing as SSBM, I'd argue. Agree? Disagree? -

Welcome, everyone! Such talent, electronic and acoustic - very inspiring to me, a modest drummer! -
Hey, wow, that's kinda rough, dude. I don't think I appreciate that tone very much. I was just pointing out the fact that my free time has been severely shot because of said romance, not that she was somehow keeping me from playing chess when I want to. It's just that I'd rather be with her doing stuff than hanging out with you patzers. (Oh snap!) Phew. No need to go all PMSing on me, dama. I didn't know it was your time of the month already...

Yeah, I'm sorry for being so lazy, guys. I've never tried to do OCR chess and have a girlfriend at the same time, but it doesn't seem to be working out. So, of course I'll be around for the foreseeable future, but if Kamoh sees it fit to discard those of us who can't meet our quota each week, I should probably be the first to go...

The real consequences of blurring video games and real life..
Rainman DX replied to Steben's topic in General Discussion
Ooh! Ooh! Sometimes, when I've worked in the garden for a couple of hours, I'll stand up to stretch, and in my mind, I'll imagine walking through the garden as though in Myst; i.e. finding the corners where you stop, turn around-transition, and then move, and places where clicking on it will make an event happen, like a certain loose brick in these steps will reveal a hidden message scrawled on parchment, etc., etc. -
Here's hoping everything's alright. Keep us posted.

Okay, okay, I got one... Maybe Steben can relate to this on some level, too. You know you've played online chess too much when you are playing chess at a real board with a friend, and, violating any "touch-move" precedent you may have set, pick up a piece to move it, only to decide against it. Now, you're not dumb, and you're pretty sure you know where you picked up the piece from originally, but you don't want to make a stupid mistake, so you casually lift the piece away from the board and drop it off of the table... I've totally done this/caught myself about to do this in real life a couple of times. Laugh-out-loud funny when it happens, but it certainly puts things in perspective, too. -
Keep us posted. If you make it as far as Atlanta, I'm as good as there!

indeed. Rainman DX vs. Salaxzar, 0-1. Rainman DX vs. grayfox9996, 0-1. Rai... oh, who am I kidding? Patzer DX vs. Margoute, 0-1. I have a streak of -9 on Yahoo! chess y'all. -9. I don't think I've ever been up in the double digits before, on either side! EDIT: Rainman DX vs. Amazgr8, 1-0. Win on time.
-
Fix'd. Mkay. Much to kamoh's chagrine, a loss to Salaxzar, and a subsequent loss to Grayfox started up the evening. Only heaven knows what the bleak future may hold for this poor patzer's OCRCL career....

I've tried to contact you on two separate occasions now, Mr. Ansari. I've IM'd you twice - I'll send you a PM shortly just in case. I'd sure love to make some Moves with you if you know what I mean. If you've been busy, I understand, but I'd appreciate a response... EDIT: Okay, here's the breakdown. I'm pretty annoyed. I needed one game to work out the cobwebs, and I lost 3 pieces to 6 as I recall... The next match I owned up with some lucky breaks and finished 6 pieces to 1. The ensuing tiebreaker .... ... was only 5 moves long!! Good gosh. I made an arguably simple oversight in my first and only real move. In one fell swoop, DarkeSword had pinned my King(2) in with a 1, and no escape route. One nondescript move later, and it was over. Rather disappointing, considering my win at hand. So there you go. Rainman DX vs. DarkeSword, 1-2.

Please, Kamoh - More time! MOAR THYME!!! New girlfriends and Accounting tests and IT Homework and Spring Break mission trips and new girlfriends... I just don't have much time for chess... EDIT: Rainman DX vs. Falchion39, 0-1.

Sovereign Legend and myself (sorry, I just can't bring myself around to spelling it wrong) took it to the house, and while I feel I can stay up with him in the opening and middlegame, my endgame has always been a distinguishable weakness of mine, and it shone brightly in this match. SL overpowered me in the end, taking a pawn lead and transforming into a 5 pawn lead. pwnd. Rainman DX vs. Soveriegn Legend, 0-1.

Damnit. Super Bowl 2. There is no way that picture is the Chiefs. (?)

OCR01553 - Tetris Attack "Final Panic"
Rainman DX replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man, is that true! I can hear both, plain as day - and what a pleasant blend of seemingly amalgomous ingredients. Even though I am unfamiliar with the source piece, the end result is knock-you-on-your-back dramatic and blessedly lacking of the abused atonal high strings in most pieces of similar genre and mood. The melody is there, and the harmony is supportive. This piece has all the good stuff - a quality submission. -
Green Bay vs. Oakland, the first Super Bowl. Altough I'm not entirely confident that the Lombardi trophy, as it would be later named, looked like that at the time.
