*NO* Mega Man X8 'Iron Will March'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty cool take on this source. You've taken the background string melody and brought it to the forefront, and it really works here. What's holding this back is that after you've used the string melody for the opening, and then the guitar, you use it again as the background for some soloing....and that's about it. I might be missing something, but that's the only application of the source I'm hearing in here. Along with that, the mix is only 2:18 long, which doesn't afford you a lot of time to expand much on the themes. Production is pretty good overall, although the strings feel a little mechanical, and there's a couple times where the drum pedal sounds a little unnatural to me. Pretty nitpick on those points, though. I like this start a lot, but it's just not developed enough. NO (resubmit) -

(FL Studio represent!) As a HUGE Mega Man fan (my favorite universe!) I just could not let the opportunity pass when Bahamut unveiled his X series project; and I knew the opportunity was not only to be part of something that awesome but also to grow in trying to reach that "OCR quality". Whether or not I'm there yet, I've definitely improved in every conceivable way - so THANK YOU to everyone who has shared their knowledge, and special thanks to zircon and Sixto who have been incredibly helpful both directly and indirectly through IRC and tutorials. Anyway, knowing that a ton of people would join a project like this, I decided to avoid the really popular and obvious tracks. Mega Man X8 as a game positively surprised me and I figured it could use all the attention it could get, so I went for VS Lumine ~ The First Form. Being the build-up to the old "REAL final battle/form" trope (here VS Lumine ~ The Second Form, a much faster track), I wanted it to be a heavy "(not-quite-)calm before the storm" type of thing, if that makes any sense. The title intentionally has two meanings depending on how you read "will"; it both refers to Lumine and the Mavericks' determination toward their goal of a "new world", and to the simple fact that their armies are made of... durable material. So yeah, thanks for listening! -- Joachim 'Torzelan' Sandberg -------------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ajeK8ooQuQ

*NO* Final Fantasy 9 'Gangster Gets EdvardRolled'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
This came up on my playlist again, so I decided to relook it over and recheck everyone's votes. As I listen to this now I'm agreeing with Vinnie and 'Ili on the recording quality, as well as the couple sections of weird notes. I'm going to have to revise my vote, and hope you can get a stronger recording! NO (resubmit, please!) -
*NO* Crystalis 'A Tale of the God Slayer' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
I gotta say, there are some really cool new arrangement ideas in here, like when things really get going at 1:55. However, the fact that it takes nearly 2 minutes for things to really get going is pretty much killing my excitement for the track. There's just too much fat in here now. Playing is pretty awesome, along with the drumming. Really awesome when you've got things going well. Some of the synthwork doesn't feel like it's gelling with the rest, particularly the 3:51 section. Also, things are still a little overcompressed, making the track lose a little bit of that intensity to make it really rock. Can anyone else confirm if it't clipping I'm hearing in the bigger areas, like around 5:17-6:11(ish)? I hate to throw this back at you, but I still don't think it's ready as is. OCR02909 - *YES* Super Mario 64 'Sunken Secrets'
DragonAvenger replied to Fishy's topic in Judges Decisions
Well used source, but not overrused, IMO. You've stayed close to the original melodically, but there's a lot going on behind the melody, nevermind the instrument changes. Everything is kept fairly simple, but I think that's what makes it work so well. There are a couple times when the balance is just a tad off, mostly the lead being a little low, and overall the strings are a little fakey, but you make them work in the arrangement; mostly looking for nitpicks here. I think you put it best: a great blend of conservative arrangement but with some nice expansion and personalization. Me likey. YES -
To Be Posted means that the mix has been accepted but the mix itself and the evaluation thread has not been made public. Generally we try not to let mixes sit too long before they are posted, although with the number we have in the YES queue as well as direct posts (which are not included in that list) things unfortunately end up taking a bit. There are some exceptions to this, and generally any mix that is on there for a super long time has a reason to not be posted yet, and the artist is aware of this. EDIT: Double ninja'd

I must have been on skype when listening to this originally, because I remember it being very loud, but listening now...not so much. My bad on that. Pretty well-done source, but I think you've added some unique spins on it as well as filled out the soundscape pretty well. Changing the time signature to 4/4 allowed for a pretty easy transition to electronica. I'm not really sold on the sound choices, especially the lead synths at the beginning. I think your drums could use a little more oomph to them as well, they are a little weak overall. The second half of the mix is really feeling like a rehash, and I think that's what's killing things here. It's a bit too much of a 'been there, done that,' feel. You did some nice stuff, take it further! It's a good start, just needs more interpretation/arrangement and some production fixes. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Metroid 'Kraid's Return (Leaving the Shelter)'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Not much to add to what Jesse has already said. The drumwork is really awesome in this, and the guitar and bass are pretty good, but essentially you've got (cover+drums)-(solo)-(cover+drums). If you could flesh out your arrangement ideas more throughout the mix you could have something good for OCR here. NO (resubmit) -

- Shophttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyDmOlNFpXg - Floating Castle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBxdZosvHc8 - Menu Screen ------------------- I'm torn on this. There are some spots that area really good, and super fun to listen to, but the song doesn't feel terribly cohesive to me. The opening feels tacked on, especially the chip-rock jump, and almost every other song transition is almost out of nowhere. Sometimes it works, but a lot of it feels just too random and sudden. On the good side though, the solo is pretty sweet, and I really love the 'outro'. If you took just that ending and fleshed it out to it's own mix it would be damn good, IMO. Guitars are taking over this mix in the worst way and are overcompressed. They're drowning out the drums pretty badly. Definitely needs to be looked at. The production definitely needs some work, and the arrangement could use another look, in my opinion. Other judges might not have the same issues I do on that aspect, so see what they have to say. Source is pretty short, so there's going to have to be a lot done with it to keep it interesting at 4:16 long. We're talking less than 25% source at this point otherwise. Overall what I am hearing is some expansion on the soundscape of the original, but after the source finishes it's run-through (at 1:10) I'm not really hearing any connection back to the source for the rest of the song. Can someone confirm this for me? Aside from that, the sequencing overall is very mechanical and stiff. You need to work on humanizing your sounds throughout. Also, the lead sound is either a flute or a violin, and to be honest, the fact that I can't figure out which one it is is really bothering me. I'd suggest using a different sound to cover that line. If there is more source inthis that I'm not hearing, awesome. Otherwise you really need to work on this to get more of the original tune in there. Regardless, the production is showing some promise, but needs work. NO (resubmit)

Kudos to you guys for picking a game and track that not many people would consider. You've got a pretty fun take on the source, and I like the combination of the rock and Japanese percussion. The arrangement works pretty well overall as well, really getting that dark ominous feeling throughout. Without timestamping it out, there are times where the source feels pretty scarce, but overall I think it shows itself enough to be on the good side of things. The overall balance feels strange for this track. The guitars are overcompressed, but feeling distant in the mix, which is a strange combination. Drums are feeling overall quiet as well, but the organ feels pretty upfront and center. Overall the elements just aren't matching together well, which is sucking the energy out of this mix. Pretty cool, but you've gotta fix up those issues, bros! NO (resubmit)

*NO* Mega Man X2 'Dusty Dune Devil'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
There's a lot of good things going on here. I like the mixture of styles you've got here overall, and I think they are combined pretty well for the most part. I think there are issues in the execution, however, that are really holding this back. The overall balance feels off, with the rhythm guitars being too loud, and some of the other elements not holding their weight as well as they should. Samples are decent, but show their weaknesses when they are featured (violin and guitar specifically). There are a few times where sequencing feels a little mechanical, mostly in the sections of slower notes. The issues are all little things, but they are adding up. NO (resubmit) -
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has a fantastic soundtrack. The arrangement you've got here is a really good medley, with transitions that really work well. Unfortunately, for a solo piano mix, the piano sound itself just isn't cutting it. I'd look into trying to get a fuller sound overall. Hopefully the other judges can give you a little more in depth advice, and I'd really like to hear this one again (this will be staying in my personal library). NO (resubmit)

*NO* Sonic & Knuckles 'Eggs in Spaaace'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the source you've used here. You've taken this up a notch in tempo, and added lots of little personalizations. Despite all of that, I do feel like this gets repetitive, and feels very close to the source structurally, playing through a couple times before it closes out. I think you can do more here with the source and with some original material to give this more of your own edge. There are times where the drumwork really works with what you've got, and other times where it feels completely on autopilot, which is strange. Take a look through and really work with those, because it's one of the strengths of the track at times, and could be a little more solid. The snare sound is also very bright, which could be toned down a little. Other sounds are somewhat generic, but I think you make them work. I'm kind of on the edge for this one, but I think the arrangement needs that push. Hope you look at this one again. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Sonic Spinball 'Cluck Alert!'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
There are some fun moments in here, but right away i'm noticing a lot of production issues. A lot of the track feels very overcrowded, and it's tough to know what to really focus on. The overall levels aren't working with each other, and they're all competing for space. Along with that a lot of the different synths/instruments feel muddy and indistinct; the guitar most especially. You've got a neat start on the arrangement, specifically with you're opening motif, but it starts to get overrused after a while. I'd like you to break it up with some different sections to give our ears a break from the same idea. There are a few sections where the notes aren't quite fitting together as well as they should. Be careful to check that things are matching up. Overall I'd like to see a lot more expansion on the source, and for you to look for ways to cut down on the repetitiveness. Overall the sound effects aren't really fitting into the track well, I think you'd be better off without them. Also, the ending tag seems out of nowhere. You've got a start here, but there's a lot of work to be done. I'd suggest hitting up our WIP forums for some more feedback. NO -
*NO* Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) 'Let It Beat'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
This has been around long enough. Taking another listen and looking at my fellow joojes responses, I'm inclined to agree with them. Intro-outro need some adjustment, and the source connection could be a little more solid. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Seven Gates of Jambala 'Alternative Party Mix'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Very fun and obscure source. Some fun things you've done here, overall adding some good head boppin' to the source and really making it fit for a party. There's a good deal of stuff added to the mix, but overall it feels a bit conservative. The melody and structure remain pretty close to the original, and even at times the sounds feel similar to the source. I think you could do more to expand on this overall and add more of your own flavor to it. There are times where the mix overall feels very crowded. Compression is running somewhat high, and though it gives some of that party feeling, it could be toned down. The bass is huge throughout, which is clashing a bit with the lead synths at times. Overall the balance needs some work. Pretty solid start, but you need to hit up some of the arrangement and play with the production as well. NO (resubmit)
