OCR01205 - Shenmue "Dreaming While I Wake"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is such a deceptively simple song, and I love it for those little details. The lyrics are great, everything just slips together. Great stuff! -
OCR01106 - Darius "Silver Hawk Legacy"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'd like to take this time to say that mixes that employ several seconds of near-silence to start are not very friendly with me, since I have the instinct to check my headphone volume/mute switch. I am not familiar with the original. Can't comment on (re)arrangement, but it didn't bore me once I sat down and listened. The instrumentation did sound kind of generic/dull to me though, there wasn't very much beef to hook me in with that. Still pretty good stuff. -
OCR00583 - Green Beret "HardCore"

Confession time: When it came time to review this guy, I just searched for "rush'n attack" saw a goat track, thought it sounded kinda hardcore, and started reviewing that, wondering why this got such negative reviews. Dude, this was an old attempt, you were still young and learning, and that's cool. I'm interested to see where you are at now. -
OCR01800 - Super Metroid "Jade Catacombs"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Hrm. The first five minutes rocked so freaking hard. WOW DUDE. The last bit after like 5:15 just didn't seem to have that energy. Granted it was an entirely different movement, but it feels kinda disjointed. I dunno man. I am in love with every bit of this song but can't help but notice I hit "rewind" on my iTunes whenever I get past 5:15 ish, even when it's in the background. That said. Wow. Again. I dare say this tops White Skies as your best work yet, and that's saying a lot. The bar gets higher and higher, and I love every second of it. SO GLAD this got posted on OCR. I was hoping it would, wasn't sure though since VARIAtions wasn't a site project or anything like that, but glad it is up. Everyone needs to hear this. -
OCR00502 - Space Harrier "BIT Live Arcade"
Master_Yoshi replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A lot of times I can forgive repetition in tracks when I put them in the context of something other than a standalone song. The problem here is I just can't figure out what mood I'd want to be in to listen to this. I just don't find this particular style and set of sounds to be very enjoyable. Not my cup of tea, so I can understand why there aren't many reviews here since I don't think it's a very mainstream or accessible song. Still though, it's a good take on the source, I'll give it that. -
OCR00555 - Super R-Type "Solitary Flight 2002"
Master_Yoshi replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I actually dislike this track, which is wierd because beatdrop is one of my favourite dudes to listen to mixes from. The instrumentation does it from me. The lead (for the first couple mins) just sounds grating whether I listen to it on speakers or headphones, and I just want to turn it off. I'm sorry dude. You have some great stuff happening in the background, but I just can't be brought to separate the elements in my head to listen to them. -
OCR00597 - Shadowgate "Death Rave"
Master_Yoshi replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's interesting how the reviews are all over the place here. I think I was put off by the intro a lot, and I could really have done with that and skipped right to the meat of this thing. In fact there are several times in memory when I have hit the "next" button on my keyboard because of the intro alone, and this is just totally bogus. At the 30 second mark where you have that chiptuney sound and the other electronic elements meshing we have what should have been the intro. That being said, once you are done with that ridiculous intro, you have an awesome track. However as I am writing this, I have a huge smile on my face with it in the background. The piano in the end is absolutely killer, it is beautifully handled, meshes wonderfully with the other elements. Man, this mix is just all kinds of awesome. Good stuff, highly recommended here as well. -
OCR00483 - Streets of Rage "The Last Dragon"
Master_Yoshi replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really wanted to love this mix, but even for only being just over 2 mins long it felt like it was really dragging. I would have liked to see some more ideas introduced here, it just didn't catch me. Love the ending though. Nice touch! -
OCR00257 - Legend of the Mystical Ninja "Oedo Pentatonic"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
If I had to describe this mix in one word it would be "safe." It really doesn't take any chances, or push any boundaries. You could do a lot worse than to listen to it, and there are really no glaring flaws, but don't expect it to alter your DNA and give you a really awesome extra appendage like a laser firing shoulder cannon. -
Ok man the siren is all types of win. I'm not really sure what to think of this, let alone how to put those confuddled thoughts into words. This is just... huh.... This is the type of thing you play in a club where you have black lights and lots of neon paint sprayed on the walls, flashing lights going off everywhere and nobody actually is listening to the song because they are all just too damn happy to care about anything except dancing. That in mind, this mix is exactly that. Something that you mix in when dj'ing and don't worry about it. The people that are there listening to this will love you for putting on a video game track (if they recognize it) and everyone else will just keep dancing. Yeah......

OCR01669 - Myst "Unraveling the Mystery"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really like this. I can't give much more constructive criticism than has been seen here, but I do actually like it a lot. The ideas presented are well enough executed, and I honestly did not expect the mix to keep evolving as it did. The arrangement here is just awesome. I really like it, and hope to hear more from you in the future dude! -
OCR00175 - Shadow of the Beast II "Shadows of Dimension Z"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This has an almost cinematic feel to it. I wish that drumline didn't stand out quite so much, the kick is just too jarring for my taste. There is all that wonderful ambient stuff going on in the background, I want the rest of this to feel meaty too! Oh well... I still like it. A lot... I just pretend the kick isn't happening and all of a sudden this mix goes from a 5/10 to an easy 8.5... There's a lot going for it here, I can only hope the mix gets more attention in the future. Definitely worth a listen. -
OCR00180 - Punch-Out!! "Iron Mic Challenge"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
So I totally did the whitest thing imaginable in my car today when this came up. I turned it up and started rapping improv lyrics about little mac to my passenger to the beat of it. Apparently lyrics really will spice this track up. Too bad I suck at rapping. Ok so the track it self is deceptively simple, but still really great in its own way. It has that kickin sample, nice scratching bits, and there's also that phaaaatttttt bassline. I like it! -
OCR00287 - Ninja Gaiden II "Trance"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I had never heard this song before today, and I wish I had. I'd have instantly commented on how good this mix was. It has its faults, it sounds dated, and it just otherwise doesn't really have a lot of lustre to it. All that said, I love this piece. It makes me want to run along rooftops stealing stuff and assassinating feudal lords while this plays in the background, and at certain points I'll make sure to do a kickin pose under the moonlight. At least that's what I think of when I close my eyes and listen to this. This is some good stuff, it definitely needs more love. -
The intro was killer. The rest of it really was quite meh to me. Maybe I need to play this game to "get it" but I just wasn't feeling this track. Ok, so this mix is old. 2003 old. The sounds are definitely dated, I can forgive them. If I look at this mix from that angle, I can forgive a lot of things. Hell I still listen to SNES music, so no big deal. It's got some catchy sections, and if I knew the source I would probably like it a bit more. Still quite listenable, and that intro alone is worth the price of admission.

OCR01791 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Lava Dead Beat"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix is really lacking a heavier bass section, which is really wierd. I would have to say that the production here seems really wierd. I hear the bass, it's doing its thing, the drums are going, but the guitar sections sound so out of place here. They have a nice live element to them, but I don't feel that in the rest of this. Still though, nice take on the theme. Enjoyable, but sadly not memorable. I would have to say that looking at the production would definitely be my best advice for the future. That guitar stands out too much, and not in a good way. It just doesn't sound like it belongs, and I'm sorry I can't give any better critique than that. -
OCR01792 - Mario Kart 64 "Holiday Frappe"
Master_Yoshi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I honestly would have to say I hate the source material solely because penguins jumping in front of me was one of my pet peeves with the game. Also, not a fan of christmas music. HOWEVER if I was a fan of either this source tune or Christmas music, I'd be able to appreciate the extremely good instrumentation, the balanced sound, the fun and upbeat melody and the general awesomeness of this mix. Hell, I'd almost be able to forgive you for using this source tune since you use it in such a nice expansive way, really fleshing out the tune and making it your own, just having fun and getting to play with it. This is good stuff, seriously! -
OCR00179 - Shadow of the Beast III "Purified"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What did happen at the end? This mix has such a low playcount even though I love it just because I end up skipping to the next song when that last 30 seconds or so hits. It really does make me sad. Still though, the rest of the mix is fun! I like it. It has an awesome feel going for it, and I really dig the ethnic touches. It's definitely a nice little gem here, in need of some polish and to get a bit of dirt rubbed off, but still quite sparkly! -
OCR00151 - Street Fighter II "Blanka Braziliamix"
Master_Yoshi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I too have no clue why this mix doesn't get more love. It has all the required elements to be a great mix: Good beat, awesome energy throughout, and some very tight instrumentation. I like it. And I don't even like Blanka's stage music from the original street fighter. How's that for a slice of awesome!? -
OCR00170 - Final Fantasy VII "Cid (Solace Simplicity)"
Master_Yoshi replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The contrast between the uplifting melody and the extremely depressing soundfield (at least to my ears) is what gets me with this mix. This is just such a turnaround from what the melody if cid's theme is, that the mix just doesn't work as well as it could. I think the problem is honestly that cid's theme hasn't been re-arranged near enough to fit with the atmosphere of the rest of the piece. Yes,the playing is really quite emotive, but there's just not enough of a shift in the main theme to really make it fit. Honestly I think that a bit more re-tooling of the theme would help this stand out as one of CoTMM's best tracks. -
OCR00386 - Chrono Trigger "No Time"
Master_Yoshi replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's a very good mix, it does sound dated but that gives it a very nice feel in my opinion. I Can see how it is overlooked though, it doesn't stand out on anything but an attentive listen when compared to the other Zeal remixes. Still, I think that the execution and concept were great, and the playing spot-on for what this piece needed. -
Give the gift of reviews! (part 3)
Master_Yoshi replied to OceansAndrew's topic in General Discussion
In going to the forums and giving the gift that keeps on giving (or at least one of the gifts that does so) I realize how amazing djp is for doing a writeup for every posted mix. It's inhuman! So glad I decided to participate in this. Some of these mixes I am writing up for are ones that have come up in shuffle when I am out and about and I think "I should read up on this mix and post a review" but immediately forget about when something shiny distracts me. -
OCR00090 - Shinobi "Phat Musashi"
Master_Yoshi replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I can dig a good portion of what this track is doing. The intro is nice, and the main melody sections are pretty groovy. I love that one sound that is in the background there... almost sounds like water trickling when I don't pay too much attention to it, and give the track that much more of a cool factor. Kewl. -
OCR00378 - Revenge of Shinobi "Da Factory Funk"
Master_Yoshi replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
So glad you mentioned this, I thought I was going crazy looking through my computer for this song. The song does have a groove and the flanged percussion is... yeah... I just don't like it. I dunno, it doesn't seem like it goes anywhere, and the sounds used overall don't really do anything to help it for me. *shrug* I guess that's just personal taste though. It still has the djp shine and attention to detail that I come to expect though, so definite points for that. If you are into this style you will like it for sure... I think.
