Dunno about the milkyway; I'm in Algstogermaht, tens (or even hundreds) of millions of lightyears away. PAN-THAU-RA, hell yeah (cycle 14 IIRC).

OCR01969 - Marble Madness "raMble and Mess"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice, happy song. I can see how the 16ths may rub some people the wrong way, and I, too, would've liked for them to be more subdued, but overall, I'm okay with it. I also find the small changes and variations throughout the song very interesting to listen to; instead of just going intense/breakdown/intense, the changes are small and subtle; they're a joy to discover. Nice work. -
I can't help but feel that the breakdown is in the wrong place, so to speak. I would've preferred to have it placed at the very beginning, i.e being an intro instead of a breakdown, standing for peace and happy days, which then get violently destroyed and result in the second, harder, guitar-heavy part.

OCR01967 - Romancing SaGa 3 "Romancing the Bossa"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I agree with what was said by the judges; the transition into the faster second part of the song does feel a little weird, and the flute doesn't sound particularly good, but neither of these two points really detract from my enjoyment of this song. It's fun, it's happy, it's jazzy and at the same time, it makes you wanna move. Nice work. -
OCR01966 - Mega Man ZX "Flames of Darkness"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I agree that most of the sounds used are fairly generic, but like pretty much everyone else, I wasn't bothered by it. I think it's because none of the sounds stay around long enough to become boring/annoying; the mix is so full of variation and changes that not a single of its elements can overstay its welcome. Hope to hear more from DJ Velly, and I also hope that his future submissions show more personalization. -
OCR01964 - Final Fantasy VII "Aire Tam Break"

Definitely hearing the Pendulum influence. While I agree that the remix does not sound as "full" as it could, I'm not particularly bothered by it. Nice use of the vocal sample at 4:34; the part afterwards is pretty nice, too. -
OCR01962 - Virtua Fighter 2 "Juunen Hayaindayou"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely getting the 80's vibe, though it doesn't really remind me of training montages or anything of that kind. To me, it sounds like a song from a cheesy SciFi B-movie. Which I enjoy. Good choice of synths. Nice work. -
OCR01961 - Ghosts'n Goblins (NES) "Ghosts'n Condoms"

Incredibly funky from the very first second on. Great bassline. Haunting feeling. This is Mazedude at his best. Love it. What's the sample used at 0:44 and 2:38? -
OCR01960 - OutRun "Shiny New Ferrari"

Nice intro. I love the different guitar sounds this remix features, from wah-wah to the rhythm guitar that lends a certain Iberian/South American touch to the remix. The ska portion's awesome as well. Finally, the ending made me smile. -
OCR01959 - Radical Dreamers "Thrash's Snakebone Pit"

Definitely hearing the spy-theme; I guess it's the strings. The best guitar parts are the powerful ones, e.g. 0:47/2:10 onwards. However, I don't care much for the sound of the guitar coming in at 1:34. -
OCR01958 - Sonic & Knuckles "Hidden Within"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Seconded. Also, I like the sound of the piano, for a lack of better words. Something about it is very relaxing and soothing. -
OCR01957 - Final Fantasy X "A Fine Place to Live"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Interesting take on the source; giving it the chiptune-treatment was a nice idea. I really like the relaxed and mellow feeling of this remix. And I agree to what was said by several posters before; this remix conjures images of beaches and sunsets. -
OCR01956 - Wild Arms "A Ring and a Promise"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm the complete opposite; this part (as well as the similar one later on) is the only thing I really dislike about this mix, as it sounds like every trance song ever produced in Europe back in the late 90's/early 2000's. Ugh. However, other than that, this remix is very good. Love the slow part between 0:40 and 0:50, and the strings add a lot. Moreover, Ashleigh's voice is really awesome, and I hope you two collaborate more in the future. Nice one. -
OCR01955 - Secret of Mana "Sea/Sky"

Much more accessible than some of Ziwtra's other remixes IMO. Very laid back groove with a lot of attention to detail. The first 5 or so seconds remind me of Zelda:ALttP for some reason. Good stuff; been listening to it a lot in past few days. -

^Heh, so I'm not the only one who's reminded of 90's French House when listening to this. This remix had me bobbing my head to it on the very first listen, and I wasn't even really paying attention to the song back then. This is absolutely awesome; I've been listening to the song every day since then. -
OCR01953 - Mega Man "Cut Man's Lullaby"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Probably the most sad-sounding song on OCR, so good job on achieving that depressing mood. Seems I'm the only one who doesn't get the spaghetti-western vibe from it; the song certainly reminds me of old western movies, but not really the Italian stuff. -
OCR01951 - Secret of Evermore "Canine Labyrinth"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Never played SoE, so I can't say anything on how the source tune was used, but as a stand-alone piano song, this works very well. Why's the volume so low, though? Makes it kinda hard to listen to it as part of a playlist without having to adjust the volume. -
OCR01949 - Panzer Dragoon II Zwei "Lagi's Takeoff"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Quite short, but what's there is absolutely awesome. The relaxed atmosphere of the song is superb, the tribal beats are great, and the chanting in the background adds a certain something. Great debut mix; hope to hear more from you. -
OCR01948 - Final Fantasy VIII "SeeD Mission"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Though I do like the transitions between the different sections, none of the elements of the remix really stand out. However, this also means that the 4 minutes are filled with variation, keeping the remix from getting stale. Overall, good job. -
OCR01947 - Super Mario 64 "Big-Band Battlefield"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice arrangement. The clapping and talking in the background really adds to the atmosphere. I'm not too hot on the drum solo, though. The bari one was cool, but the drum solo was just a little bit too self-indulgent. I sure hope this site gets more live jazz submission in the future. -
OCR01946 - Final Fantasy VI "A World of Decisions"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What really stands out about this track is the performance. I don't know the source, so I cannot comment on how well it was arranged, but the performance sounds really good; probably because of the changes between loud and quiet parts (as was noted by other reviewers) and the lack of smashing-your-forearm-on-the-piano-for-dramatic-effect, which is something I really dislike. Nice job. -
OCR01945 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Mystic Chemicals"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm not as enthusiastic about this remix as most other people seem to be. I like classic rock, but this remix is missing something. I can't put my finger on it; maybe it is like DJP said in the write-up and it's the singing that's missing, but something about this arrangement bothers me. That being said, the part starting at ~2:35 is awesome.
