"Purgatory" - A mellow-ish acoustic-ish song
avaris replied to about:blank's topic in Post Your Original Music!
I thought the intro was a lil too squeeky...but the rest of this is sick. An awesome example of how to blur the lines between acoustic and eletronic elements. The use of different guitar techniques at different places was awesome. Really had me hitting the rewind button. The mastering and soundfield sound really good IMO. Good minimalist lead melody that strikes a tone. Good use of reverb to set the mood and not muddy things up. The pad textures are nice. This was def a pleasant surprise please keep on experimenting! -
WIP - Kid Icarus (NES) - Medley (it's baaaack)
avaris replied to Ronyn's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hey nice to see you back around here again JG! IMO most of what needs to be improved has already been said. The track overall is a lil too soft and distant. Some strings/choir in the background to fill everything out would help tremendously. Everyhting is panned nice but it sounds like a small band trying to play something epic. In the end you always come through with some awesome emotive songs so I know this def gonna improve. So far the best part of this mix that stood out for me is the part writing. Lots of different elements feeding off eachother. IMO that's something that is always extremely hard to accomplish. -
OCR00444 - Secret of Mana "Cry from the Forest"
avaris replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wat so little reviews! This is def a mix that expands and keeps true to the originals. One of the first OCR mixes I listened to and one of the ones I continue to listen to. Great stuff dudes! -
Oooh the balance is much improved. Good spacing with all of the elements. 3:04 The drums sound a lil distant compared to the rhythm guitar which is right up front. This is even more apparent at 3:22 once the strings come in full force. To to boost the volume just a tad. Ease up on the decay on the reverb. Any type of overdrive/saturation or even a slight distortion should help them out. Maybe mess around with the compression a bit more. Maybe set the attack back a bit to keep the sharp transients. Then tack on some more release and keep the threshold high. This could make the drums too fat so be careful IMO. I'd go with the saturation/overdrive option before the compression though IMO. Only other gripe is the intro piano. I like it but compositionally it feels like it is building up to something...which it does. The thing is the velocity levels seem pretty stagnant. Maybe just try to add in a slight crescendo using the velocity. Overal this is an awesome arrangement with some really good orchestral influences. The pacing is nice and well executed. And for being mastered in garage band...the mastering is pretty damn good IMO.

OCR01634 - Final Fantasy VII "Daydreaming Again"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Love PH's mixes. One of two OCR mixers IMO that really stand out for giving incredibly emotional performances on their mixes. This mix is a great example of taking the feeling of the original and enhancing. A perfect tribute to what this song stood for in the game. -
Ahh ok I read completely different.

Haha sweet I missed the forums. Lookin forward to DA's new vocals!

Soundfonts can be used in Reason. Just load em up like any normal NN-XT or NN19 patch. If you got the samples it's really easy to automap them in NN-XT. I'm in the process of making NN-XT patches out of all my orchestral samples that came with Kontakt 2. It takes less than 5 mins easy to make the NN-XT patch.

Lovin it so far. It is reverbed a lil too much but I still like. IMO fits with the feel. Def keep the epic feel goin!

OCR01632 - Donkey Kong Country "Riptide"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great stuff. Because of the melody and mood and feel like a cover at times...but who cares the original is awesome and this pays perfect homage to it. Many simple elements used REALLY GOOD together to make an awesome song. Def agree with tweek I just kinda loose myself in the song and relax. -
Oooh more psytrance from an awesome source. It was def interesting to see where you dudes took the source as it has many parts that could be reinterpreted so many ways. The FX were well placed. Glad to see the brooding chords played on some strings. Def like the FX put on the strings it matches the feeling of the chords. Guitar was def a nice touchand blended nicely. Def the perfect element to introduce to push the piece forward structure wise.

If it was released on vgmix there are a couple people who have just about every megaman and vgmix song released from there. http://www.vgmix.com/vg25/viewtopic.php?id=2422 Hopefully you will find it there.

Please come. Besides myself I can fit 3 people in my car. Sp AS, AeroZ, and I think I am picking up Fishy too. So if AS can't come there is room for one more.

Haha quote of the day. Happy b-day dude.

Totally agree. I really liked this one. The bassline while simple was really effective in it's set-up and went well with the song.
-
I use it with Kontakt2 in Live. Also I got the demo for Cd Xtract and converted a bunch of the patches into NN-XT format. Although bc of the demo I can't rip any of the individual key switches into NN-XT format. I can only do the first key switch. IMO it'd be really cool if they updated the NN-XT to play GIGA or .nki files. And allow for it to support key switching. Although you can set up key switching in a combinator so it's really no big deal.

Run whatever source you want to "analyze" as a modulation source into a vocoder. I forget what freq range each band inthe vocoder is but it should be in the manual. IMO while it is good and very handy to use spectrum analyzers try to work on using your ears. IMO when I was able to start EQ'ing by ear and not by spectrum analyzers my mastering improved quite a bit. It takes time but it is def doable.

Def some nice ideas. Sample quality would mean the sampled sounds you are using are of low quality. For example the sample used for the snare or the strings samples could be of 'low quality.' Also it's the same kick and snare. Then kick needs more high end. Try to layer in another kick that has more presence in the high end. The snare really starts to sound old by the end of the song because it is the same rhythmic patter and the same velocity. Once the track gets goin the hit hats loose some of their presence. Your bass and kick share some of the same frequencies. Try to give your bass a boost around 400hz and 2000-4000khz. It lacks a large amount of presence. The entire song is building up to something...and then nothing happens. The guitar needs to be replaced. Try a synth based on saw wavs and maybe some tri wavs. 2:46 is pretty cool. The intro is kinda cool but the same chords keep on getting repeated. Also the chords are all done in the same octave. This makes them loose some emotional presence. Where is the panning? Everything feels very centered. The bass is sitting pretty wide in the stereo field. This is an easy way to muddy up the low end and make the bass loose a lot of it's presence. Really try add some ear candy. Some parts where as a listener you are just like ooooh that's cool. You bring different elements in and out which is good. 1:47 to 2:31. Waaay too long for a breakdown section. And after that it's another breakdown section. Def work on getting some cool rhythmic textures and build on your orchestral influences and sound design.

OCR01629 - Jade Cocoon "People Made of Stone"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow this mix was a pleasant surpise from a game I've never even heard of. Anything song with ethnic influences can have my children. After watched Akira the drum work in the intro really feels at home. I think the panflute was the correct choice, but it seems to sit on top of the mix at the end instead of blending in. I will def be listening to this mix, really some excellent stuff with a nice ambience. The snyth work is simple yet high effective and blends in perfectly. Which IMO is one of the hardest things about blending genres is getting the synths to fit with the natural instruments. -
Personally I prefer polygamy. In an attempt to figure out a solution to this I discovered something really cool about the NN-XT remote editor. The play mode BW reverses the damn sample! Cool stuff. Now only if the props allowed us to pipe audio through the NN-XT to use all of the goodies found in the remote editor. The longest I can get a lengthy sample to play back before fade out is ~55 seconds at 120bpm. The sample used was 2:24 long. The only way to get it so it doesnt fade out is to program Matrix patterns to increase the volume as it is fading out. But that's a huge pain in the ass.

OCR00640 - Final Fantasy VII "Rape of a Planet"
avaris replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Love this remix. Percussion and dynamics are insanely good. Synth design is basic buts fits the mood and the composition perfectly. Really enjoy the glitched out type sections like ~1:00. Have listened to this for years and is one of the best old school OCR songs period IMO. The breakdown sections were well placed but still managed to keep the groove going without sounding repetative. -
OCR01363 - Final Fantasy VII "Beyond Midgar"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
One of my all time favs at OCR. Can't get enough of the minimalist insanely emotional pieces. The tone of the piano compliments the composition. The human performance aspect is def the bread winner for the mix.
