  1. Well, Youtube's quality isn't very good so it doesn't help make things any better, but I can tell that your mixing is pretty flat anyway. Everything pretty much stays in the same few octaves for most of the song and it doesn't ever feel like your song is climaxing or going anywhere. This is compounded by the fact that your arrangement doesn't have much of a dynamic curve, and there's a distinct lack of transitions or a solid ending. It feels like it's just plugging along at a constant pace without ever evolving or going anywhere, so throw in some breakdowns, buildups, transitions, or whatever you need to give the arrangement a bit more direction
  2. You've been getting some pretty awesome feedback here so I'm not going to go into too much detail until you switch it over to mod review. However, I'm going to tell you one thing that bothers me about the WIP in its current form - the velocities of your machine gun drums are extremely robotic when they need to sound like they're being played by a real drummer in this kind of music. I'm not sure how specifically to go about doing it, but between the static velocities and the sub-par drum samples, it really brings the song down. So, in addition to the sample issues that SlyGen pointed out, I think you've also got to watch your velocities and try to make it sound a bit more humanized, however you go about doing that.
  3. Yeah, the sound you're getting out of the VST you're using isn't terrible, but it might take some work to get it to OCR standards. The strings are decent but exposed a lot of the time so they show their weakness, but your solo brass particularly sounds like a weak point in the ensemble. Everything feels pretty hard-quantized and lacking in personality, though the arrangement itself isn't bad. It's just a lack of expressiveness in your instruments that kinda drags this mix down. Sometimes you hit points where you sustain your strings for way too long, as well, which sounds unrealistic. Look through your mix and try to identify some of these issues; this song certainly isn't a lost cause by any means, but there's a lot of compounded issues that will likely keep it from passing the OCR panel.
  4. Not sure if I'm 100% behind the genre restriction given the number of other projects lately that have been metal-centric, but it's your project so good luck I guess
  5. Ok, status update. Joshua Morse has left the project, leaving Hot Pursuit open. Last track available on the SNES half, so let's see what you guys can do with this one! Also, taking Palpable's place on the Credits theme is Josh Whelchel who's definitely got the potential to make something worthy of the final song on the album! Can't wait to hear what he comes up with! Lots of you have been giving me updated WIPs, so that's good to hear! Keep 'em coming!

  7. You! MSN! Noooowwww!

  8. I'm pretty sure I don't have more than 10 dollars left in my bank account but I had to make an exception and pick this up, this is a pretty amazing compilation. Just the Chrono Cross song alone was worth the money I donated, but there's a metric shitton of other amazing stuff on top of it. Thanks for throwing together such a huge compilation for a good cause, I'm proud to have supported this initiative and I wish you all the best
  9. I moved your thread to the Recruit & Collaborate forum if you're looking for someone to sing the part for you, you'll have better luck here Once you find someone and you start posting some tangible music, I can move it back to the work in-progress forum though.
  10. Alright guys, deadline's over. Thanks to those of you who got something in, and to the rest of you, I hope you won't be far behind. I've gone and reverted everything on the tracklist so that everyone with a deadline extension is now back at red, and everyone who didn't turn in a WIP is in pink. If you're a pinky, your song is technically open until you get me a WIP to lock your claim back in, so if you're still interested please do that quickly! I want to make a note about the number of deadline extensions I gave, since there are a lot of them. Every artist that I granted one to gave me ample assurance that they would finish their song eventually and not drop out - most of these artists usually work in spurts and can get a finished product out in a matter of weeks. In these cases, I've let them work on their own timetable, but they're going to have to work faster and harder later on to catch up. This policy of extensions isn't going to slow us down So, your next deadline is August 1st which gives you the whole summer to meet it. I'm hoping/expecting to have about half of the songs finished by then, but the benchmark to shoot for is a BLUE WIP that's 50% or more finished. Or, if you've claimed multiple tracks, aim to have at least 50% of your total songload finished by then. That shouldn't be too unreasonable, but as always, if you have extenuating circumstances all you need to do is talk it over with me The teaser will be released here shortly too, so you've all got that to look forward to! Thanks to all who did their part to make this deadline work, let's keep the ball rolling and get some good progress accomplished in the next 3 months!
  11. Oh lawds this is groundbreaking technology! ^^ This guy is good. He hasn't had very many posted mixes yet but y'all are going to love what he's churning out for his track! I'll post a detailed status update tonight after all my WIPs are in, so until then, GET IT DONE!
  12. Hey man, please get in touch with me about DKC3 ASAP so I can either get a WIP from you or arrange for a suitable deadline extension. You're the only artist I haven't heard from and I'd hate to have to drop you! :-(

  13. Hey bud, the Donkey Kong Country 3 deadline is today! Do you have anything for me yet?

  14. Did I miss your birthday? Aww man, sorry! Hope you had a good one :-D

  15. Alright, it looks like everything has been mainly covered by Gario, Rozovian, and SlyGen so I'm going to keep this brief. I don't mean to be harsh here, but these are pretty much just rips of the original MIDI and those won't ever get past the OCR judges. So, I know you tagged every one of your mixes with Mod Review, but every one of the mixes has a pretty similar set of problems with it that would prevent them from passing. MIDI rip is a big no-no. You can use the MIDI for reference of course, but you need to change up the instrumentation, arrangement, and structure more than you already have. The production is iffy. Some of your samples work better than others but the way they're mixed together is still relatively amateurish. The song length is a problem - generally, only mixes that are 2 minutes or longer have a chance at getting accepted. Your repetitive use of loops is also cause for concern. These critiques apply to all your mixes really, so if you want to get posted to OCR, you're going to need to improve in all these areas. What you're doing is fine if you're just making music for fun, but know that you're going to keep getting the same critiques if you don't take all the above areas into consideration.
  16. hey, it can be bonus tiemz plzzzz?

But srsly, it's getting close to deadline time, did you have a chance to throw anything together yet?

  17. http://tindeck.com/listen/dirm So, this is the product of about 3 minutes of work (1 spent EQing and 2 spent recording) but I thought despite the amount of time I put into it, I thought it was worth sharing It was all played live on my keyboard (yeah, sampled guitar FTL) without any editing or quantization. Any adherence to actual music theory guidelines is entirely coincidental because I don't know any theory, but ehh Hopefully you all enjoy this. It's the first thing I've ever recorded in my life that I think is good enough to share publicly (keep in mind that I first started playing an instrument only a year and some change ago, so I'm still really new at this.)
  18. Diggi Dis turned in his final .wav today, I think you guys are gonna like what he did! GSlicer and The Scarborough Joker's track is finished too! Lots of you I still need to hear from, please get in touch with me ASAP before the deadline!
  19. Well, I wasn't planning on doing any preview materials for this project whatsoever, but in order to advertise things I'll be throwing together a 2 minute preview (8 songs @ 15 seconds each) for this Animé Expo thingy that OCR is apparently doing a panel at. Yay. So, if you want a chance to be on the preview, get your WIP to me by Sunday afternoon! If you specifically don't want your song in the preview, you've also got to contact me by then, too! The preview will be played at OCR's panel and then released to the public afterward. ALSO THE DEADLINE IS IN 4 DAYS, IF YOU HAVEN'T CHECKED IN WITH ME TO GET AN EXTENSION OR GET ME A WIP BY 420, YOU WILL BE DROPPED!
  20. The soundscape feels pretty static due to some weak-sounding instruments that, unfortunately, are present throughout most of the mix. The piano is the biggest offender - the writing is extremely basic which I suppose would be tolerable except that you're working with some average samples and robotic velocities. I'd suggest a mix of both giving the piano some more energy and deviating from the same chord pattern every once and a while and improvising a bit! The rest of the mix kinda suffers from the same issue - the arrangement hits one energy level and stays there for the whole mix with only some slight changes in drum patterns and melodies. The groove is fun but the song needs to be way more dynamic. You've got a nice foundation for a mix, now build off of it!
  21. Mmkay, this is definitely getting there, a marked improvement over the last WIP I heard on this. I like the idea of adding in a flute part, but your sequencing of said-flute is really robotic and doesn't have the same articulation or human touch that you'd expect from a pan flute. Work on adding in some creative velocities and pitch bends to give it an authentic sound I think the bass synth is a little too up-front and dry, and since it's present throughout the whole mix, it tends to grate on you after a few verses. For the most part, this is coming along pretty nicely though - your synth choices are mostly working well and the melody/chord progression elicits a very Owl City-esque mood. It also reminds me heavily of Sole Signal's mix "Serenity's Wake" which is a good thing! Take caution though, your mix is starting to get repetitive, since a lot of parts are repeated several times without much noticeable variation. For a mix only 2 minutes long, that's not a good thing :\ Keep working on this, it's got good potential!
  22. Well, I'm not gonna lie, this is really rough Very few of your instrument parts are lining up, timing-wise, which makes the mix feel chaotic, random, and kind of difficult to listen to. I don't mean to discourage you from remixing but I think it would do you some good to study the rudimentary basics of music theory on your own or find a teacher that can help you on a much more fundamental level. There's a few moments where things seem to line up alright, but I think the kind of soloing and countermelodies you're attempting to pull off here are pretty ambitious. If I were you, I'd regress into some simpler source tunes until you get the hang of remixing before you try and tackle something like Stilt Village. Sorry for coming across as harsh, but there's only so much advice that can be given here - going back and learning more about music theory and composition in general would be much more beneficial to you, I think.
  23. I think ultimately the quality of feedback is going to speak for itself so I don't think regular critiquers like you have to worry about feeling disenfranchised or overshadowed here. I dunno about how Nutritious wants to handle things, but myself and halc both make an effort to give regular feedback anyway even if a mix isn't tagged for review, so having to do some repeat reviews isn't really anything I'm concerned about because I try to keep up with most of the songs that come through the workshop that need feedback anyway
