The Newbie Introduction Thread: Come on in and say hello!
Gario replied to Mahaboo's topic in General Discussion
Hey, if you go from 'Newbie' to 'Proffesional' in several years... that's not such a bad pace to work at. I hope we can help you make that 'several year' goal happen at OCRemix. -
Alright, let's see what we've got here. First the good - the gated train is awesome. The glitches are excellent. The bass is really phat, and juicy (and sort of reminds me of Genesis synthesis). The drums are well placed. The arrangement is quite good, on top of all of that. The pad used at 0:56 just doesn't work. I agree that you need a pad there, but the one chosen just has too many harmonic partials to sound good at all. Use a cleaner pad there and the chords will sound much better. There are times where the melody doesn't quite punch through as much as I'd like (the synth at 0:20). It sounds alright in the beginning, but over the rest of the track it's just too thin to push past the rest of the track. Adjusting the highs on the EQ for it would help, as well as adding some reverb. With all the other awesome sound you have going in this track, I think you'd be able to fix this, no problem. ... yeah, I really like what you have going here, otherwise. Nice work on the improvements, and sorry for the late response - Christmas stuff and all.

wip MM7/MM1 - Shade Man's Tower (ShadeMan's Stage/Wily Tower)
Gario replied to Cyril the Wolf's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Alright, sorry about that - relistening to it now. Drums are a little more varied, some of the instrument choices are better (more of that cool synth I likes so much, there's a new sine that fits really well, too). The harpsichord is better in this version, too (though a bit more release would still be ideal). I noticed some spots where the chords fill out, which was nice. I think most of my crits still hold though. Drums are a little more interesting, but they could be more interesting still. The bass (not drum - I'm assuming the thin bass drum is intentional to the style, for right now) still needs some more strength. I hear improvement in the chordal portions in some of the song, but I'd like to hear more of that. It's better, but there's still more to go. Good luck, mang. -
"The purchase can wait, emulate!" On topic, that game just crucifies Megaman X. The graphics are awful, the backstory is wholly unnecessary, the whole 'shop' aspect... Damn, how could they get MMX so wrong?

wip MM7/MM1 - Shade Man's Tower (ShadeMan's Stage/Wily Tower)
Gario replied to Cyril the Wolf's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Ooo, from the compo. Well, since I have the compo version on my comp, I'll listen to that one (if this one is different let me know). I've got to comment on the Harpsichord, here. I understand that you like the dry soundscape, but that particular instrument needs to resonate. Not because it would sound better, but because the Harpsichord has no dampening system so it sounds incredibly odd to hear the notes die instantly. This is less 'reverb' and more 'add release to the sample'. Sounds like we're going for a 'BOOM-bada-BOOM-bada' sort of bass/drum combo (I like onomatopoeia descriptors). If you're going to go for this route, please give the bass more bass. Sounds like the bassline only covers the lower mids, when it could (and needs to) be covering a much deeper range. Give that bass some volume, and when the bass starts going over the bassline give it a little (or a lot, pending on the style) of sidechaining to compensate. The chords are a bit lacking. The pads only cover single notes in the chords, which make the track sound hollow. I really like the synth at 1:07, though, so keep him as he is. Give the other pads some more notes to play. Much like in metal, you want to have the drums do interesting things. If you want to keep the untz going, that's fine, but have fun with the hats, possibly the snare, put in some fills, etc.. While it's not an issue now (due to the relatively quiet soundscape) you'll want to look into making the snare more pronounced, especially when it comes to the high EQ on it. I suspect that's a sample issue, though - look for some more full snare samples to use. It sounds like you had fun making the Wily theme into a Shademan-like style, and I notice some very nice subtleties to the arrangement. I hope some of this critiquing is enough to get started working through the track. -
Probably would've been more appropriate in the Originals section and/or Community, possibly. That being said, this is awesome, as usual, Rushjet. Glad to hear you're still in the business of awesome. Only complaint would be that the album is short overall, but it's still great for what's here.

Holy crap you had Shade Man with the Wily 1-1 theme? Seriously, that was all that was running through my mind all week... completely disrupted my thought process for Magnet Man, in fact. Lucky bastard

Uploading mine now - sorry if it's a few minutes late, DS, I needed time to encode it.

Really? I wait until the end because I'm buzy/lazy.

The Legend of Zelda's Official Timeline Revealed?!?
Gario replied to Overflow's topic in General Discussion
Why is this thread called 'official timeline' when it's yet another fan speculation? These speculations circulate all the time, I don't see what's special about this one. -
Wow, that's pretty awesome.

OC ReMix on Popular Korean Variety Show
Gario replied to The Mac Attack's topic in General Discussion
Well that's certainly interesting. I do hope they gave credit where it was due, though, otherwise a load of good it does the site. Still, it's actually really fitting to the show, where it's used. -
This morning I almost missed work 'cause my body is stupid and wouldn't respond to my alarm, and it would've been devastating. However, this morning my phone had a special alarm set just at the right time to remind me that it was Darkesword's birthday, and I made it to work at a decent time. It's all thanks to Darkesword. True story. ... actually, it's also my brother's birthday, and that was what my alarm was reminding me of, but since it's DS's birthday too we can all pretend that it was to remind me of his b-day. Happy birthday, man.

Alright, very nice approach with the intro - I liked the hints of the theme that are there. The atmosphere works well as an intro, but won't hold up over five minutes (this isn't a complaint, as you change it up later). I don't know how variable the attack is on your samples, but if you could adjust the attack setting on your samples so there is no fade in for each strike it will help make them sound more human (Not the strings so much, but the woodwinds and such). I don't know if it's possible in Garageband, though. Once problem that permeates the mix is the lack of bass throughout. I hear virtually no bass, outside of the piano strike and a quiet marimba. Some deep strings would really help in this regard, or even bringing those marimbas out better would help. Right now there's no bottom, though, which makes it feel lacking. Arrangement-wise, it's not going to work for OCR. The intro is great, but otherwise it's a note-for-note arrangement of the original. A really pretty note-for-note arrangement, but still far too conservative for OCR. Even still, it's a very nice remix - for what it is I still enjoyed it. For the sake of practice you can spend some time humanizing the woodwinds and adding bass to the mix, but it won't pass the panel with as conservative an arrangement as it is. Love your style, though, and hope to hear more from ya in the future.

wip The World Ends WIth you - Calling / Deja Vu
Gario replied to AMT's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The bridge is what I was thinking of - they really stand out, there. Of course it would ruin the effect if they were there all the time, but hearing them just a touch more would make me happy . Really great work on this, though. -
wip just what this world needs - more gerudo valley!
Gario replied to FM's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Oh we're listening, don't worry. Keep 'em coming, please. -
I am very happy with this OCReMix-mas so far. Judging from the preview posted, I have a feeling these next few days are going to be awesome.

Backup vocals are a great addition - if that was Stevo's idea, it was a great one. A damn shame they only make one appearance in the track, though... I'd be a very happy person if they came in, say, whenever you said 'Wake up!' toward the end of the song. Personal preference, though. I think this will be a pass, if you were to submit it, now. There ARE still some intonation issues with the lower leaps, but I don't think they'll be a deal breaker. Overall, this is just a great track; thanks for giving TWEWY some love. If you're comfortable with it now, I'd say submit it. Great work, man. Also, lol @ Caesura & TWEETY. -
Holy crap I thought I watched all there was to watch from that guy years ago. Awesomeness.

... I don't see why people have a problem with this song. I always thought it was a pretty neat song, myself. I'm going this week, btw.
-
Actually, I kind of like this song. Not that I've played a Final Fantasy since IX, so I suppose my opinion on the matter is meaningless.
-
Oh wow, this thing is pretty massive. I will get through it before Christmas, though - always fun to dive back into Academia from time to time
-
If it were a stock avatar, I would consider changing my avatar of three years to that. Also, to anyone listening to my remixes in this compo (as well as elsewhere) it should be obvious that this game's soundtracks is one of my biggest influences. No joke.
-
Means I have to finish the thing in the next week, eh? I'm on it - keep an ear out for me Fishy May as well post my list, here. Crystal World Battle 2 Song of Memories You're Not Alone! Dark Messenger (I just want to see Snappleman get something cool out by next week )

Ooo, sexy remix. Alright, so I've read through the previous 'RESUB' evaluation and gave this a whirl. I think it has a good chance to pass as is, but there are a few points that they might hang you up in this, still. That main lead you use is great in the beginning, but as the track goes on it just sounds worn down and overused. I think you can get away with using the same synth, but as the track progresses change the filters it runs through, allow the highs to come out from time to time, do something to make it sound different as the track progresses. It's great once, it'd be great to return to later in the track, but as the only sustainable melodic line it just doesn't hold up that well over that period of time. I like the extra disco elements. They sounded sex. Toward the middle the track starts to drag. I know you add some really great flourishes to it this time around, but it doesn't feel like enough to keep me going over what is essentially is the same material again. If you stick to similar chord progressions, really cut lose with the melody - it's been played enough in the track where people will still recognize the source, even if what you present is very, very liberal. If you want the melody to stay where it is, have more fun with the harmonies, or truncate the arrangement a bit - people already got the idea the first time around. Essentially, it's a great idea, awesome merging of the sources, in fact - but twice is too much, here. Do something more radical here and people will enjoy it more. I'm leaning on them giving this a borderline pass, as it is. I'd like to see this be a surefire, no-brainer pass. I hope this helps get this one through, since it really deserves to be up on the front page. Good luck, man.
